I fail to see how living on 5+ acres somehow precludes people from living simply.
Maybe you have never been to the country, or a small town, but few of my friends live on anything less than 5 acres, and by any standard they live their lives about as simple as you can.
And lets cool it with the number of vehicles. The price for a working functional car/truck is less than most big TVs. You want to point a finger at simple living hypocrites? Point it at people driving brand new cars that cost 40k+. Living simply is not having your CAR cost more that the average person makes in a year.
I mean, jesus christ get a fucking clue. Professional marathoners run VERY differently than sprinters, who run VERY differently than tri-athletes, who run VERY differently than baseball players, who run VERY differently than math professors.
No where did I imply that people couldn't run, I implied that you must be a goddamn retard to test a running efficiency path with non-runners as your test subjects.
Do you want some engineer that designed something to test it out to see if it improves professionals performance half a percent?
Please. This is to help real baseball players who really run bases. If the math guys could suddenly outrun the professionals, fine, but this is a clear fraction of a fraction gain, not a leap forward.
You don't get non-runners to do a running test. How is this insightful? Seems more "funny" to me.
No, i am serious. I used iTunes of course for the backup and restore, and there wasn't anything that jumped out as a "do you want to save your pictures and music? yes/no".
The point i was trying to get across was that i don't use iTunes, and i followed a very basic backup / restore procedure and the only thing there really was was the option to either backup or restore.
Like i said, maybe there was a way, but it sure wasn't/isn't defaulted to "on", and there wasn't a dialog that asked to do it for me.
I recently did the exact same to my iPhone, and lost my pictures, music, and apps.
/shrug Maybe there was some way to do it correctly, maybe if i had set it up to sync or something, but there was only the one button there, and I try my hardest to stay away from iTunes.
What alarmed me about the process was how long it took to just restore a backup that didn't have any real data with it. It took over an hour to do what exactly? Send about a gig over USB 2.0? Why does it take SO long to not do a good job?
Okay, I might agree to a point, but based on what you said, who is a real "scientist" in society?
Researchers? Give me a break. The ones I have worked with are WAY more focused on papers at all costs than the doctors I have worked with. (Yes, I am about to start Med school)
While it might be easy to criticize people, propose a better system. Hell, point to a group of people that are generally better "scientists" than Doctors. If I had to do that, I guess I would point to the Physics majors, in general. But that being said, its easy to be a scientist if you explore a field that isn't nearly as directly associated with reality. They rarely have to make hard decisions where lives hang in the balance. You can call a jeweler a better craftsman than a combat engineer, but the circumstances are vastly different. Reality limits people, and end of the day, doctors have lives in their hands. Its easy to criticize when you aren't actually doing the work.
I guess my point is that while you may be technically correct, its a moot point when viewed in context.
Doctors in reality are some of the most scientifically minded people you will ever meet in society. The NEJoM is not a stupid periodical that only fools read, it is what drives modern medicine. Is it 100% correct? No. But is it good science? More or less. Should you read it as a Bible? no. should you throw every article out as rubbish as you implied? No, not at all. Read with an open mind.
You need to be careful with your words. Even if you meant that "Doctors aren't good scientists" (but they are better than most EVERYONE else), you should say that. The original post reads as if every Dick and Jane is smarter, or more scientific than doctors at large, and that is simply not true, Especially here on slashdot the home for nerds who think they are gods gift to man.
You say doctors have poor scientific educations, but fail to understand that a pre-med track in college takes almost every science course available. You say that they then go to "vocational school" but fail to include that this "vocational" school accepts only the best and brightest, where they spend the next 6-10 years learning more about their field. How is this bad?
Your notion that Med school and residency somehow are failing at training scientists is so absurd it is laughable. No, a surgeon isn't a scientist, and didn't go to school for that, although he has a much better grasp of "science" than most any other profession.
I just don't get what you are implying here. Do you think that Computer "scientists" are better scientists on average than doctors? because the answer is no. NO.
Your points about prestige might be valid, but i would counter with a very hard leek at yourself. We know VERY little about the human body, most of what we know is from observation, not deduction.
Maybe nuns really do have lower cancer rates, maybe its due to standing all the time instead of sitting on their asses. Or maybe its the food they eat, it might even be God, i don't know, i didn't read the article. But then again, neither did you.
If you want to pretend to be an educated "scientist" then fine. If you want to argue with the NEJOM, fine.
But when you get sick or hurt, don't you dare go to a hospital. Work out your own cure, "scientist"
Some games run better with dx10. thats a big no-no on xp.
A real 64 bit OS, and apps? not on XP.
In terms of window management, the new half screen snap winkey+arrows is worth the price of the upgrade. You don't realize how shitty XP was at window management till you have to use it again on some poor saps computer, and spend half your time dragging windows to an appropriate size / shape.
What about the new sound mixer with levels controlled per application? Amazing compared to XP. Leaving my browser muted is great for adds that make it past adblock.
finding / launching rarely used apps is EASY and fast. just search.
Finally being able to see HDD usage bar graphs in my computer?
The new performance monitor?
There are a TON of small things that makes life so much better in win7. Are they strictly necessary? No, but neither is cruise control on a car. You don't know how nice it is till you have to use a car without it.
I cannot tell you how MUCH easier it is to just search. I want to change indexing options. In XP I open control panel and hunt through icons to find something that probably isn't even there, its hidden on the system screen or something. In 7 i just type index and BAM, it pops up before i am done. I am on a friends computer and need a russian language keyboard, just type language. Cant remember where or how many folders deep the calculator is? calc
If you see the search anything other than a HUGE plus to win7, you really are doing it wrong. Does it replace shortcuts? No, it was never supposed to.

. . . your ignorance is alarming.

It wasn't even mentioned that this is a coding class.
It is a class about computers, and he wants to teach virus removal.
Stop being such a lawyer and actually read the summary ffs.

So you would have recommended win7 if their marketing was better?
Sorry, MS knows that the geeks already know about their products' merits.
Just because you base your recommendations based on marketing (apple) doesn't mean that all computer savy people do.
So what you mean to say is that MS has really been ahead when it comes to eyecandy?
Programs used daily go on the task bar
Programs used once a week go on the desktop
Programs used less get searched for

Just a heads up, this "game changer" is called a ftp server. My friends and family already have access to download my files or upload whatever.
Maybe what you want is a game changing facebook app that just manages passwords and opens a new window with your friends ftp server in it.
Why are you trying to reinvent the wheel?
In all honesty, i would buy a iPad if it had a good stylus input option for taking notes in class.
