    It's a valid point, nevertheless.

    B) Why aren't they talking about apps that access your information? I know you can disable them but, if you are willing to accept froggy here, I don't think you will.

By the looks of Slashdot's (c) blurb i could be linking to materials owned by a dozen people by posting a single link. I link to a few stories throughout the day. Looks like i better stop before I see an ICE badge. "All trademarks and copyrights on this page are owned by their respective owners. Comments are owned by Poster. The rest © 1997–2011 "

btw....i might be taking this way off topic, but itsnt it bad form for ICE to use an image of their shield? I think it might have been a slashdot story, but i vaguely remember an article talking about how horribly illegal it was for someone to reproduce the FBI shield and, in fact, the FBI doesnt do it or allow it.

I just infringed your ass off, or something... :P

Oh, I didn't realize I was asking a question to an AC. Getting a response from that is impossible.

I tried safe-mail as well when I was looking for an allegedly non-mainstream and secure mail service. It didn't impress me but what really made me ponder if I should use such service was the fact that it was based in Israel. I don't know if I'm being paranoid but putting emphasis on providing a safe mail service would be a great place for Intelligence Agencies to perform surveillance.

PRIVACY: Safe-mail.net will not disclose information about you or your use of the Safe-mail.net system, unless Safe-mail.net believes that such action is necessary to comply with its legal requirements or process; enforce these terms; or protect the interests of Safe-mail.net, its members or others. You agree that Safe-mail.net may access your account, including its contents, for these reasons or for service or technical reasons. Please note that your Internet Protocol address is transmitted with each message sent from your account.

You're simply taking their word for it as with EVERY other mail service.

Anyway, this started because the AC said he liked chrome but hated gmail and I wanted to know the reasons. If you pitch it against safe-mail for both features and User Interface I don't think safe-mail stands a chance. However, if you don't trust Google (which was the problem I faced when communicating with someone who didn't want our mail exchange to be over gmail) I don't really understand why you would trust safe-mail at all. I don't see a reason to pick it unless for the false sense of security it might provide.

Wouldn't PGP encryption be better if your concern was data privacy?

I've heard good things about http://www.mailvault.com/ but I haven't tried it.

You talk about Firefox's stupid shit without specifying what and why. You say users are drawn into chrome but don't explain why either, why can't they keep using the same FF3 instead of trying out a beta they dislike or customizing it to their liking.

I don't think Chrome is gaining more users because of Firefox's mistakes but because it implemented a very good design from the get go and pushed an extremely aggressive advertising campaign. The fact that there's a lot of development of Chrome plugins (to resemble those available in FF) makes it able to compete with Firefox on that level as well.

On an interesting note, Internet Explorer 9 imitates Chrome's design.

Tl,Dr: AC just proved my point by insulting developers and stating things matter-of-factly without even trying to show one example of what he considers stupid shit. One has to wonder why does he even bothers to critique instead of just using whatever software he finds suitable?

  24. Good luck with Argentina on 13 Countries On US "Priority Watch List" For Copyright Piracy · · Score: 3, Informative

The perpetual financial crisis in this country along with the lack of moral condemnation makes it a haven of piracy. I'd say that 90 % of desktop computers have ilegal windows and those include many medium-sized companies and goverment instituitons. Those that pay liscenses basically do it in response to fines from possible inspections (or use Linux).

The 300-plus-page report provides several pages of analysis for each country. As an example, it cites Argentina as having seen 965 percent growth in Internet usage over the last 10 years, with 26 million users (64 percent of the population) now online. Of the entire digital music market in Argentina, piracy represents a staggering 99 percent, with more than 1.25 billion songs downloaded illegally every year.

There's a 4 to 1 relation between the US dollar and the Argentinian Peso and the average citizen earns much less than first world countries. The cost of life is permanently increasing.

Taringa.net -- hosted in Argentina; Alexa rank of 116; 7,155 sites linking in, with its biggest audience from Mexico.

This is the best example. It's the iconic webpage in Argentina for a lot of things and one of those things is file sharing. Everyone who needs certain software knows that the fastest way of getting access to it will probably be to search on that site. People compete for points in a very well thought social system (it includes games and more). Normal people get sucked into this "reputation" thing and become average posters.

Taringa, in essence, doesn't do anything ilegal because it only has links to hosting sites.

    From the PDF

Rampant piracy in Argentina remains a very low priority for the government and
    many of its enforcement authorities

In a country of political turmoil and widespread corruption online piracy is not an issue. Specially when Argentina doesn't have many affected companies or services.

Regarding the priority actions. Their goals are unrealistic. Many people are hungry and below the line of poverty. If the US wants to provide aid for the goverment, humanitarian needs are closer to what the goverment might look at.

If they think that pressuring Argentina with bonuses or threats is going to affect this particular line of goverment, they are blatantly wrong. Relations with the US over economy matters are not good after many years of struggles with the International Monetary Fund.

Tl,DR: Argentinians, used to pay overpriced goods with their low wages don't see any moral problem getting things they'd probably wouldn't be able to have if they didn't resort to piracy and, besides, everyone else does it.

Arg Gov won't budge in an election year to the likes of USA when there has been no evidence in the past years that this was beneficial (ie: IMF regulations)
