What if Sony is the label releasing this screwy CD? Can't they do whatever they want with their trademark? I mean, that might be another angle -- saying Sony is committing fraud by saying it complies with the standard, but if Sony created the standard, then who'd challenge it?

Anyway, what I wanted to address was your comments about Robertson being a sellout. As I said, I never liked him either, but as the CEO of a public company, he is legally required to do what will get shareholders the most money. I am completely sure that mp3.com's shareholders were thrilled to learn that their worthless chares of MPPP would be traded for shares of V. So he pretty much had to do it.

So all the cube had going for it was "style". And when style is the only thing a product has, it better make damn sure that there's no flaws in its style. Such as molding lines/cracks/whateve you want to call them. Also it wasn't exactly expandable so it wasn't really a power user's machine (hold the jokes please). Only now that I have Linux on both can I see what the G3 marketing hoopla was really all about, since now both systems run the same sw; the ppc 750 (or G3) really does have much better performance than equivalent-speed i386 systems

With all due respect, you're comparing one of Apple's top processors with one of the worst x86 processors ever. For Less than $60 you can get a 800 MHz Duron, try it with that. And anecdotal evidence about compiling being "roughly comparable" on PPC 400 and x86 1000 doesn't hold much water with me. Compiling what? How long did it actually take? Most systems built around k6-2 processors that I've seen use inferior motherboards and memory, which I'm sure play a role in your observation.

Of course not. This is scientific research: it is not our goal to engage in tactics such as tricking the industry into choosing a flawed system. Our goal is simply to analyze security systems and share our results openly with the scientific community.
My main point was that it was foolish of the researchers to think that SDMI/RIAA would allow them to publish the results of their research, especially if their research showed any weaknesses in any of the proposed systems.

And despite what the FAQ may say, I still think it was wrong of them to participate in a "contest" whose goal is to develop technology designed to take away people's rights. I understand that analyzing encryption is standard practice but if some terrorist organization posted a contest to crack encryption they use for sending messages about their next bomb targets, would the researchers still participate? Weed out all the bad encryption technologies until they find one that was "uncrackable" and pass this info along to the terrorists? All in the name of research? Is this still a valid excuse?

I really don't feel too bad for these researchers in this case because by participating in the SDMI challenge they were helping the RIAA create a technology to be used to take away the rights of music listeners. While they may have done it for academic reasons, I think it was a really foolish thing to do. The only reason I can see for them to even participate would be to see just how lame the RIAA's encryption schemes could be, at which point they should have pointed and laughed, then walked away without even bothering to crack the code. Next time wait til sony deploys it in 1,000,000 SDMI compliant mp3 players before cracking it.

It's sort of a different case if they change the service so that it's completely different from what it was when you bought it. But like I said, they reserved that right in the EULA, so even though it really sucks balls, you accepted that risk.

This is one reason I think software as a subscription is a horrible idea. If the next incarnation of MS Word (Word.NET I assume) decides that I don't really need a spell checker, I'm SOL. But like the title says, speak with your wallet. If/when I get a computer that comes with any subscription-based software the first thing I'll do is format, install my warezed win2k and warezed o2k (hypothetically speaking of course). The only thing companies care about is money. If they find a feature in an app is causing them to lose money, they'll remove it. If adding a super-annoying "feature" (e.g. ads) will get them more money, they'll add it in a second. Why anybody would expect them to do anything else is beyond me.

The massive PL and ping jumps on any backbone provider (similar results on servers routed through exodus) make this connection nearly useless for me. I can't get DSL in my area either. Oh well. Anyway you should keep in mind that there's more to a connection than download speeds. I'd give anything to have a 20 ping. I even considered paying $129/month for 192k SDSL.
