(What might a GPA of 3.9 at Stuyvesant High be worth elsewhere, for instance?)
Stuyvesant is one of the top public high schools (if not THE top) in the country. A 3.9 at Stuyvesant would shows that you are an excellent student. A better statement would have been, What is a GPA of 2.1 at Stuyvesant worth elsewhere? or What is a GPA of 3.9 at Southampton High school worth at Stuyvesant?
For a while, my nyc.rr.com cable connection was going through Alter.net (a subsidiary of uunet) to my favorite quake servers. My ping went from 30-40 to 150-200. There was nothing anybody could do. I called rr tech support but the woman was sort of clueless and gave me tips to speed up my browsing, such as increasing my cache size. I asked if I could talk to anybody else and basically she said no. I wanted them to change their routing tables so as to not include alter.net. I emailed help@alter.net but, of course, no reply. Anyway I have since moved and my cable connection here does not go through alter.net and my ping is down to 20-40 range.
Your kids should take priority over your friends (or their kids). Also, the company you described sounded doomed anyway (barring a miracle, of course; low morale is not a great motivator). If the company folds and the job offers are no longer there, then what are you going to do?
Note, these days almost any website that provides a service is considered an ISP (at least in DMCA terms). This includes all the free-webpage sites like Xoom and Geocities -- er, I mean NBCi and Yahoo... sigh... I miss good ol' Xoom.
Go buy a couple of ATA 100 7200 RPM 45 gig drives now... they're relatively cheap and they have no copy protection. put 2 of them in any computer and I would hope that would last you a while...
With all of Intel's delays in getting chips to market, I wouldn't be surprised if they waited until their good buddies in Redmond had something for Itanium before shipping, and blamed it on "production delays" or something else...
If I had any faith in anything the Jamie/michael YRO team said anymore. With all the blunders they've had, I'm really surprised Rob lets them post anymore. I can keep yro stories off my Slashdot page, right?
I love asus. Abit gets the most press, but I will be an Asus dude forever. Got the K7v now, will have A7v soon with new computer... Built-in ata-100... gotta love that.
I thought the same way you did too, and while I agree that the Duron is pretty awesome, A duron 800 costs around $74, while an 800 Thunderbird costs around $110 (prices from pricewatch). I don't think anybody would cut a corner like THAT to save ~$30, a very small percentage of the system price overall. I mean, I can get a7v and a Thunderbird 1ghz for $360 retail! I just configured a system with that mobo/cpu, 256mb pc133, IBM Deskstar 30 gig ata 100, Guillermot gf2mx, etc, and it was $1200!!! That price is with a hitachi 17".24 dp monitor!!! I can't wait til xmas is over and UPS returns to normal. Then that computer will be mine and this old Athlon 750 I'm using will become my samba server.
I thought Via was supposed to be coming out with a chipset that had integrated video (from their acquisition of S3)? That ought to slash prices on Duron systems, if you can cut out the cost of a $50 video card. Sure, it's no GF2 MX, but...
Anyway, given Via's kickass track record with AMD I would think they would get more coverage than this (to me, anyway) no-name company.
If somebody bought me a VooDoo anything, I would no longer speak to them. A 64 Meg GeForce2 Ultra on the other hand... Hell even a 32 Meg GF2GTS would be fine, but don't get me anything with 3dfx written on it. I don't know who suggested a Voodoo but they don't know what they are talking about.
To all the 3dfx zealots who were planning to flame me now: don't! You will never change my mind! I get 125 fps in q3 at max geom detail and max graphical detail at 1024 with my GF2!
the Democrats controlled the Legislative and Executive branches from 1960 to 1968 and 1976 to 1980. Is that the same definition of tyranny?
Well, no, because their definition of tyranny was all three branches being controlled by one entity. And anyway I guess my statement was somewhat biased due to the fact that I think the republican party is, in fact, evil.
It's sad that whoever wins, 49.x% of the people hated him. Not exactly a mandate from the people.
Also, if bush wins, we'll see the republicans controlling the Legislative, Executive, and soon the Judicial branches -- the definition of tyranny as laid out by the founders. But I somehow doubt that all the NRA folks are planning a revolution anytime soon. Sorry to see the constitution fail us here.
That never works. See how Amazon and the MPAA are being hurt by the Slashdotters' Boycotts? "Boycott X" is so trendy. It's trendy to say. But does anybody here really do it? Not buy any movie- or music-related merchandise? No CDs, DVD, movie posters, etc?
I don't shop at Amazon, that's about as close as I get to a boycott. But I buy so few things -- and buy.com's prices are better -- that this isn't really any kind of a statement. Amazon did have good customer support when 2 Xmases ago though, when they sent me a calendar instead of a computer program.
Anyway, I'd be interested to hear from you in like 2 months, if you're a real Guiness fan, to see whether or not you really refrain from drinking it. If it even prevents you from buying a single glass I'll be mightily impressed.
If these boycotts had any kind of real effect, we would not be living in the world we do. However, even if every person who cares about something like this boycotts them, it will not affect their bottom line at all. That's the sad truth. And to make people care enough to break their habit is just short of impossible.
That's nice and all, but if you can't hear a difference, what does it matter? I, too, would prefer to use the "best" one, but if I didn't know which was the best until this test, what do I really care?
