I think that if Apple ever revived the Newton (which is a rumor that has began again in the Mac circles) we would see a very Linux worthy PDA. If my memory serves me correctly, the last newton was a worthy pda running at 167mhz... I have a dumb linux box as a terminal that is slower than that.
I completely agree with all of your concepts. The problem I guess that I have stems from the price really I would guess - who wasnts to pay 300bucks for something that should only be 50? -- I had an electronic organizer back when the pocket rolodexes were "all that" - I kept everything on it but was strikingly unamused by its lack of features, upgradability, or otherwise. But then again, I am quite cheap -- I absolutely won't spend 50 bucks on a dayplanner because to me it's nothing more than a little book with paper in it. The last question I would have is what sort of laptop did you have? That sounds terrible only 1 hour? I got 1 hour of battery time from my Mac Portable.... every Powerbook I have ever owned was at least 3 hours, and I used to get no less than 3 hours off of my p120 compaq (which was broken anyways).
I have owned a palm pilot, and in my honest (and unedumikated) opinion they are nothing more than a little gizmo for wannabe-geeks and "busy" CEO's. They do not have any interesting features to them, the display is rivaled by a C=>64 and it's ugly!... a bulky little thing to stuff in any pocket, I simply do not see what the fuss is... down with the Palm Pilot, back with the Newton - the last message pad was what 167mhz?
I agree, but the point of the maxium is this: If you give people power - they will become corrupt, and even more so if they are already corrupt - it does seem that politicians are probably the nastiest of this breed because their aristocratic, completely non-american background - so one would say they were born to be this way.

The American government is obviously not siding with the people anymore, the small business, or the little guy. No it seems rather obvious that we have a corrupt house, congress, senate, president - whatever. The 'government' that we have is obviously controlled corporations who shell out the bucks to get whatever Aristrocrats elected. An example if I may, in Silicon Valley - the most internet dependant place in the entire USA AT&T has taken the entire ISP market into their own hands by having a completely closed - monopolistic hold over the "cable modem" industry. What does Chairman Kennard of the FCC say in a ZdTv interview - is he frightened that one company may POSSIBLY be able to control the entire ISP business in the not-so-near future?... No unfortunately he doesn't. His attitude is that we can 'sacrifice' the small ISP's to build a large broadband infastructure. I have harsh words for someone who is so near sighted - It seems to me that people are far more interested in filling their own pockets rather than what is good for the public - this may seem like a new concept to many people but it is not. Politicians have always been crooked and dirty - even in Biblical times they were, and they still are. Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely. To wrap this up, they are taking the money from where it comes... being that the Sun Microsystems, AT&T's, and Microsofts are all out there saying "we need to be protected from piracy -- we need to not be screwed, oh and by the way here's 30 million dollars" the politicians are responding with "Yes Mr. Gates, what would you like in your coffee".
Although you could go with Exchange - I would not suggest it. It is not terribly well supported even by Microsoft - and it is horrendously expensive. My overall suggestion would have to be qmail. The most secure, fast, effecient, and worthy daemon to run your entire site... check out www.qmail.org. But if you want something else I have listed out some other possibilities.
Pop3: I would have to say, from personal experience that qpopper still works the best, go to Eudora and grab a copy.
If you want to play around with a purely open sourced one go get the GNU-POP3d (the old IDS-POP3d)... they just released a new version today, and it was quite promising about two months ago, at least in theory;>
Imap: Some people think I'm nuts... but I would have to say that UWImapd is really quite nice, clean and effecient.
SMTP: Sendmail is free (the pro version has support and the money is minimal). Sendmail is the default mail daemon for smtp on almost any Unix.
This is a project that I am working on, yes the 3com, as you can read works under Linux... I have a good old Bt848 TV capture card... if building the Video4Linux package though - I say beware - if you have a tuner card - be very scared. (grin) Now as for Netmeeting Go to http://www.openh323.org/ There you will find out that Netmeeting and VDOphone use a standard called H323 - which is the good old ISDN videoconferencing standard - for us people who remember ISDN;-)... it works with a 28.8 modem - but not great... Mind you if you want to download the document, you should go to the library and get the ITU standards book because it will cost you money to download it:/
But there is hope -- as for a client it would appear that there is one that is being developed called Voxilla - check it out - I am guessing that they would be more than happy to get ahold of some coders... I think that having a vdo phone would be a wonderful addition to any Linux (granted enough bandwidth).
Call it whatever you want to call it, GNU does stand for GNU's NOT UNIX, but the reverse is true Linux is GNU, released under the GPL - as well as most of the software.
I remember about a year or so ago when Dell flamboyantly declared that apple should fold and give the proceeds back to the stockholders, I find it interesting that Dell would be taking que from Apple now... oh my how the times have changed. -- Never really did like you much anyway.

LOL -- Hell yes it will be.
I'm just a cheap, impatient guy - I can't stay with any piece of electronic equipment for more than a year really.

Replying to myself -- how lame ;-) :-)
Rhad Labs is doing some work on this also - there are more than Voxilla out there... check it out
