I'm guessing the previous poster who is 5'10" and 125 pounds is female. I'm a 5'10" male, and there is absolutely no way I can get my weight much below 180 without also losing some muscle.

I think Apple with do for Bluetooth what they did with USB. My wife and I are living apart right now (she went back to school and I haven't moved yet) and we have been playing with iChat. I've been thinking of getting each of us a Bluetooth microphone/headset so we don't need to be stuck at the computer to talk to each other.

They probably didn't consider this, but resale could be a factor as well. When they upgrade their Super Computer to a G6 in a few years, I would guess that they would have an easier time reselling a bunch of PowerMacs than a bunch of Xserves. How cool would it be to say you have a piece of a Super Computer?

Does this mean they're planning on running some variant of BSD?

Yeah, it's called MacOS X. (early version of Panther)

I would imaging that, for licensing sake, they wouldn't put a stock Mac OS on there (OSX)

What? They are buying 1100 machines, they get 1100 copies of MacOS X. What kind of licensing issue are you dreaming of?

  5. Just Do It. on How Do You Get Work Done? · · Score: 1

I always think of the old Nike ad campaign when I need to quit procrastinating. I just keep repeating "Just Do It" to myself to get motivated to work on what I've been procrastinating over. It's such a simple slogan. Don't think about what you need to do, just do it. Nobody is going to do your work for you. By putting off doing something you don't want to do you are only prolonging the agony, just do it.

You are not paying $129 for an upgrade. Apple doesn't sell OS upgrades. When you spend $129 for Jaguar you are getting a FULL version of the OS. You don't have to have an earlier version of the OS installed to install Jaguar.

And most doctors/researchs/nutritionists agree that it is a bad thing.

That doesn't mean they are right. Saying the Atkin's diet is a starvation diet is a little extreme. If you are hungry it is because you aren't eating enough. In a nutshell, all the diet does is force your body to tap its fat reserves for energy. There was an article posted on slashdot that explains the process quite well. The /. story linked to the New York times, but you can find the store here as well.

Since starting the diet I'm rarely ever hungry. Before the diet I used to eat a bowl of cereal or toast for breakfast and be starving just an hour or so after I got to work. To satisfy my hunger I would end up getting some "food" (such as Hostess cherry pies) form the vending machine and wash it down with a Mt. Dew. Now I'm eating my eggs and sausage or bacon for breakfast and I'm not hungry until lunch time. Before the diet I was taking 4-6 Tums a day and a Zantac before bed. I was constantly bloated, and often times waking up in the middle of the night from heart burn. Since I started the diet I sleep the whole night through and I never feel bloated. I don't need to take my Tums any more except if I decide to cheat and go out for some pizza or a Saucy Southerner. I feel that I am much more alert/energetic in the mornings than I used to be, even without my Mt. Dew which I miss dearly.

I never ate many fruits before the diet, but I am eating many more vegetables than I used to. Basically I'm eating healthier, losing weight, and feeling better. I don't see how that's a bad thing. If you listened to what the food nazis and other "health experts" tell you, there isn't anything that is safe to eat.

Here's one my wife and I came up with. We buy a bunch of frozen boneless skinless chicken breasts, throw some in a crock pot, cover with Pace Picante sauce and turn the crock pot on low. I think we let it cook for 6-8 hours. We get the medium Pace Picante sauce. Do not get hot unless you are a glutton for punishment. We used to serve the chicken over noodles until we started the Atkin's Diet"

  10. ADSL From US West on Bell Atlantic/Mac/ADSL Crusade Fails · · Score: 1

I've had very reliable ADSL service from US West here in Ames, IA since about October. I have both my Linux box and my Mac using DHCP to get an IP address from US West. (If I ever get a complaint about this from US West I'll of course start using IP masquerading to free up an IP.)

My only complaints about US West are that it took almost 6 weeks to get me hooked up, and they fucked up my billing. I never did understand why they can only hook up new customers two days out of the month. To their credit they were polite and courteous all the times I called to bitch... *ahem* ... ask why my service wasn't hooked up.
