Well, I do not post much, but I thought this was worth it.
The day of the black out, I was heading home to my house in Cleveland. Naturally, we were hit first. It was beautiful that night because my neighbor had his 12" telescope out in his yard.
However, what is really intriguing is what happened over the next week. Everyday, driving to and from work I would notice all of these FirstEnergy trucks out on the street. No, they were not restoring power. THEY WERE TRIMMING TREES.
The NERC report states that FirstEnergy failed to trim trees to protect the grid. FirstEnergy knew that they had caused the problem and they tried to cover it up.
Also keep in mind that FirstEnergy owns the troubled Davis-Bessie Nuclear plant in Sandusky, Ohio. The nuke plant was shut down almost 2 years ago because boric acid had eaten a football sized hole in the reactor lid. It has been repaired but not re-started due to "safety culture concerns".
Finally, my G/F is a field biologist. She is constantly doing field surveys for FirstEnergy. She always speaks of their poor land use and inability to maintain their lines. She has even seen over-heated lines drooping almost to the ground.
http://www.howstuffworks.com/ is a decent site for learning. The domain name says it all. However, as a bonus, they have a pop-up when you first visit that invites you to view a page that describes the layout of the site and how to use it. Makes things easier.
Yea...right. I have had one email address since May and I already get 50+ spams per day. I have never given out the address in a web form, replied to spam, entered a contest, or anything else with it. However, the one thing that I did do was place it on a community page (go team lamb chop!) since I was acting as a web master for a short time. Guess what, two weeks later I was getting nailed with spam.
If you could meet a spammer, what would you say? What would you do? What caliber would you use? Would you want someone to do it for you? Is $10,000 a head too much?
Caliber? Why use a weapon when you can use your HANDS! Or even better, use the spammers hands against them. There is nothing better than beating a spammer to death that to do it with their own arms*.
*NOTE: a spammer with broken arms would have trouble typing;-)
First, this story essentially states that MS can get whatever information they want. This http://yro.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/02/25/20 57236&mode=thread&tid=109&tid=111&tid= 123 Slashdot.org story states that MS is trying to change Washington state spam laws.
Taken together, this means that MS can harvest information about competing products I am using, get my email address from Outlook, and then SPAM me with "special offers" for their products. Does this sound bad?
Don't get me wrong, I am a Windows user and developer, but this is plain insane. Maybe I should become a MS basher, they make an easy target.
I live in Ohio and we have always been served by Ameritech. Shortly after SBC bought Ameritech, they started a round of layoffs. Of course, following the layoffs, was horrible service. We had the same story as the Indiana fellow above. However, our Attorney General did something about it.
Ohio took Ameritech/SBC to court and won a $130M settlement. However, the Judge suspended all but $10M pending SBC's improvement in service. They made the improvement and were able to avoid the bulk of the fine. However, they then turned around and started to advertise a "25% improvement in service". They did not mention that this was court ordered and was necessary to avoid enormous fines. They should not have been allowed to advertise this.

I am not sure if this is scamware is removed in KazaaLite! I *think* normal Kazaa uses the Cydoor DLL for adware. Kazaa Lite replaces this DLL with a dummy. I can't see Cydoor putting this in their DLL. I think Kazaa probably added it to another part of the program. Just my thoughts. Anyone have clarification?
My early love of Star Trek was certainly an influence on my career and life now. James was a part of that and I am definitely thankful.

I really hope that they don't acquire DirectTV.
