    The link above must be to something else. If you got to This card link it has all the manufacturers and the cards supported along with whether or not they support gamma correction.

    Graphical installers can be very decieving. Under Caldera 2.3 the Graphical Install is very nice and actually looks better than X. Is there something in the installer that has better compatability than the X server?

    Thats sounds about right, except for the whole 10 million DVD thing. I read an interview with George Lucas and he said that the plan was to wait for releasing any Star Wars DVD's until it could be a complete set. Which means no Star Wars DVDs until after Episode 3.

    The Book division of Amazon is suppose to turn a profit this quarter. If the boycott is successful this may not happen, but I doubt it.

    The problem is that Amazon doesn't make any money!

    This may be right for the company as a whole but the book division of the company is suppose to turn a profit this quarter. If this boycott is effective then that may not happen.

    Is Australia trying to make net access a business only tool? It certainly seems that way with all the restrictions they are placing on their residence. I would think that the home users would/should boycott the internet and really not even use it in their work environment either, then maybe the government will see how stupid and oppressive the laws are in there country.

    I wasn't stating that the government WON'T punish Microsoft, but that the punishment 3 years down the road may not be as severe to Microsoft as something now. With technology changing so rapidly what is important to them now may be nothing or very little to them later. The only sanctions that would be harmful both now and later would be heavy financial penalties. Microsoft unlike AT&T is in a business that rapidly evolves in the present and is expected to in the near (3 to 5 years) future.

    I would have to say you are right in the aspect that Microsoft has had advancements that have helped the consumer, and they are an extremely aggressive company. My problem is not that they make too much money but that they will do anything in their power to keep someone from competing with them if it seems a threat to their core business.. That is what they are on trial for, not because they are a "bad" company but because the way they deal with competitors is very possibly illegal.

    This is just a finding of fact and does really mean anything right now. By the time we actually get to the damage stage and what should be done it is very possible Microsoft won't be dependant on Windows at all. As far as their investors go, they knew what Microsoft was/is and their stock price won't be affected that much in the long term as long as they continue to make a profit and keep the shareholders happy.

    This is really a non-event. The only people who didn't see this coming were the ones that don't know anything about Microsoft beside their product came preloaded on their machine.

    It is actually based on Debian, so maybe they did the Mandrake thing and just have a pre-compiled 686 kernel. Which if this is suppose to be for the average joe is probably the worst thing Corel could have done. Not everyone has pentium class computers; that and if they have one its possible they have an old 486 lying around that they would rather test it on before they move it completely on their main computer.

    You may be only the second person to call but I know about 10 people who have emailed Intuit on almost a monthly basis to get them to produce a Linux native product.

    There is a project in this respect called Khaos Linux. It is in its infancy at the moment so we probably won't see anything major from them for atleast 2 or 3 years depending on the number of people in the group and the number of kernel upgrades during that time frame.

    As technology expands and a computer in every house occurs who suffers... the young boys sitting in front of their CRT screens soaking up the radiation and welcoming impotence before they know what it even means.
    For those of us in our 20's or 30's that is even more true since our monitors were not Energy Star complaint when we first started.

    What if someone for all intent and purposes is NOT a violent person, the test shows he is not and life goes on as usual. Unfortunately this person may be a very violent person but must have a catalyst, whether it builds for years, or is just a quick switch that ignites a violent temper.
    The missed people are sometimes the ones that are most violent because its not in there everyday "nature" its something so deep that it doesn't get caught until after it happens.

    I know there are exceptions to everything, if test were perfect we would all be in jobs that fit our profile and probably wouldn't be in our current positions. All I know is I took a test of that nature and it showed me as "normal".. to bad for me and my family it was wrong... Everyone has switch.. violence in an instinct that has been passed from the beginning of time as a self preservation mechanism... so of us just hide it or are able to control it better than others

    I normally read Jon's articles with the knowledge that they are going to be long, and possibly boring in the process, but this even though it is informative of a new genre of game should have been a little more researched.. like maybe a review of the actual game and not another review of the moral fabric of society.
    Maybe I'm a little jaded with everything that has happened to me personally but I have found that morality is a subject that has many variables in which to view.. is is moral to have homosexual intercourse.. depends on if your american, or if you are an tribesman where the only heterosexual incounters are those to procreate and not just for fun...

    Well enough ranting .....
    I play Quake, Diablo, and I still manage to pray everynight to the lord for forgiveness .. for I am only human and not expected to be perfect

    I'm not saying that it's not close to being mainstream, I'm just saying it isn't ready for people who want all the commercial software out there. I could use it in my job if they would allow me to configure my own machine, but they won't so alas I must work under NT.

    Was the people were trying to sell private company stock over the internet. The stock wasn't registered with the SEC and there was no public information on the company to make a valid basis for valuation purposes.

    If it would have been EBay stock, or Intel, Microsoft, Johnson & Johnson, or any other publicly traded company then the SEC probably wouldn't have intervened unless it was sold for more than the present market value.

    If you have a video card that is not supported by xfree then the install may go ok, but when all is said and done and the machine restarts for it's first session of linux watch out. I get a 320 X 280 screen with no virtual scrolling so it is impossible to do anything. Where under Redhat the VGA16 atleast works properly. Once you get the proper drivers and everything installed for a none Xfree video card then its great, easy to update modules and everything else, but without a supported video card it is a big headache.

    I love it, everytime I see a negative piece about Linux posted here I see the flamethrowers and pick axes come out and everyone starts tearing it apart. Sorry but I think Gartner had some good, if redundant, points.

    1. And this we all know.. Linux is NOT ready for the main stream. If it was than I would be typing this from work on my Caldera box with Netscape and not from NT with Explorer 4.0

    2. It is not ready for mission critical applications yet.. I have to admit it is a hell of a lot better than Windows in this respect but it still lacks compaired to most of the Unix systems.

    3. SMP is bad.. right now.. with 2.4 around the corner that may fix some of it, but I doubt it will completely fix it.

    Some times it is better to read an article from a non-linux loving geek to that of a consumer looking for the best thing for them currently.. not a month to a year away. Take the critisism and use it to better the OS.

    Is that at the start of game development you are looking at the newest of the new hardware as well as older equipment..
    After development has started.. depending on how long it is in development..
    The "state of the art" moduling/gaming environment you were trying to produce is now working on all old compontent.. unless you take more time and money to make sure any new equipment with new features are incorporated into the game..
    This in turn is a vicious cycle unless you say enough and punch it out the door for older equipment..
    With the advances time tabling about 4 to 6 months as of late it can be very expensive both in time and financial resources to make sure you have all the newest bells and wistles .. especially if a game is in the pipeline for a year or 2.

    I have used the i740 chipset up until now and I have to say, it was horrible.. I couldn't even run Win98 without it crashing every hour.. unless I switched it into 16 color @ 640x480..

    One less chip maker to worry about hyping their chipset
