Get Sloshed with Slashdot at LinuxWorld
Andover.Net is springing for a party
for Slashdot readers at LinuxWorld next week Tuesday. The shindig will
be held at the Park Side Hall accross the street from the
conference center immediately following Linus' keynote. Tunes
will be provided by VAs San "NeTTwerk" Mehat, and the Beer will be
provided by Andover. (Let me just say that it is super wierd throwing
your own bash at a conference instead of just leaching off everyone
else's, but hey, free beer, right?).
I can't imagine a precious resource like free beer lasting long against a gigantic horde of slashdotters.
It's funny that we expect to trash a web server by pointing slashdotters at it, but can pretend that a stash of free beer has a chance in hell of lasting...
Ahhh... beer discussion!
I hope they have something decent. Sam Adams, Widmer Hefeweizen, Guiness or something. The best would be some Gordon-Biersch Marzen. They make it right around the corner from the convention center (on San Fernando Street). Great stuff!!

Go listen to "Geeks in Space 4". They actually mention the beer that they will have. Its good micro brew. Not Dudweiser or Spiller.
The suggestion of the bong was for SAFTEY!!! You can go ahead and drink all night long if you want and get sick/get a headache/make a fool of yourself/piss off people/get naked with someone you don't even WANT to know/not know where you are when you wake up/wake up hungover! Been there, done that, don't really feel like doing it again (though odds are I will unfortunetly). Now, like I said before, a few beers are nice and a lot of fun, but for serious "escapes" I've found pot to be much much much safer and more enjoyable.
Bells Third Coast Ale or Sam Adams Boston Ale. Exhaustive research on this topic continues.
Guess it doesn't apply to me then, does it =)
What's the matter, you upset because you don't have the success San has had? "complete reject", maybe that's a self-description, but it surely doesn't apply to San. San's a cool shit and has always been. Grow up.

Call me a wuss if you will, but a good cold corona with lime is very very nice =) though I am starting to aquire a taste for dark beer as well lately, need to try guiness again
Alright, you guys really piqued my interest with all this mention of the "Redhat Babes". This is going to be my first Linux expo i've attended (aside from comdex last nov. - where i didn't see any babes in the linux sections). Anyhow, can someone post where all the parties are going to be, and specifically where and when the redhat party is? I don't care about the free beer, but the girls are something I dont want to miss. Thanks
It you make any modifications to the beer, please *don't* redistribute it.
What's worse, you can drive at 16, I think we have our responsibilities slightly screwed. :)
I do not equate free with liberal but that is a very different thread (yes, I'm a card carrying libertarian (and nra member)).
If you play it cool, you probably won't have any trouble. I assume you are about 18 and look it, if you are 13, sorry but you may as well not even try. Then again I've seen some stiff enforcement so it's always a crapshoot. Here's a good example, I was at Woodstock and on the roof of their Beer Gardens (only place they sold beer) were two NY state troopers making sure no one underage got in. This is a strange country indeed.
FWIW:
/. when I was at the last expo, but my friends (that where at the Debian booth) kept on pointing at Rob and saying how kewl it was that he was doing all that stuff rite there at the /. booth.
You can hang with em at the Expo itself, I'm sure.
I'd never read
Breace.
Sounds like a segfault type post.
Cheers, I laughed my ass off.

Can I urge Rob to include Grolsch?

My favorites are Old Nick, Chimay Ale (black label) and Skullsplitter, but I don't complain about most import beers & microbrews. :) Coors Lite is ok in a pinch, since it at least doesn't have the Bud aftertaste ;)
Well, I'm also a female member of the Linux species {---note EXCEPTION to I before E rule BTW and...well, my boyfriend was and is a turbo-geek. How did we meet? In a dive bar! Don't be afraid to say HI!!
Seriously...I had casually met my man once or twice thru a mutual friend and all we did was grunt generic greetings. One nite Mutual Pal failed to show, and we drank in silence. Finally we both got hungry and retired to the same diner. We've been together since Xmas and are still mutually astonished that we found each other!
So everybody bring cards, soap, and protection, and have a BLAST! Too bad I'm stuck @ work (sob!!) But at least I found out that I'm in for 200 shares of RedHat (which is probably gonna be better than free beer or sex anyway)
I'm 17 1/2 acutally :) but that means liberal of corse...
... if you can get so many different people to the same place at the same time would it hurt to organise a party in parallel?
Well let's hope for the best
Yes... Liberal != Free... but i meant "free" like free to do whatever you want as long as you don't interfeere with someone else's life in a bad way
As far as i understood local people, the law that forbids you to drink under 21 was imposed because too many young people drove their cars under the influence of alcohol... But i don't have a car nor drivers licence, SO WHERE'S THE PROBLEM? (rethorical question)?
Well 4th of july here was the most stupid celebration i've ever seen.. people (everyone) went to the city(SF) to see firework, which meant huge traffic jams.. after 25 min the firework was over and everybody simply went home - huge traffic jams again... I think that beer is actually free in the GNU sense, because once you have it, you can do anything you like with it. Unfortunately, trademark laws mean that you might have to change the name a little, but apart from that it is indeed 'free'. There is no licence agreement restricting what you can use it for, how many people can drink it at once, etc.

Well, Mr. Nitpicky smarty-pants, a spell checker wouldn't have helped in this case...

Function: verb
Etymology: leach vessel through which water is passed to extract lye
Date: 1796
transitive senses
1 : to dissolve out by the action of a percolating liquid
2 : to subject to the action of percolating liquid (as water) in order to separate the soluble components
3 a : to remove (nutritive or harmful elements) from soil by percolation b : to draw out or remove as if by percolation

My point? None, really. I just get annoyed with people who always scream "Use a spellchecker, you moron!"

Sierra Nevada, Rogue, Dominion for a good local brew.
I would suggest a Hogshead of Whiskey.
The fun will never end!
I have a feeling that these will be the first kegs to be officially "slashdotted". Let's hope that they aren't using Tap2K from M$ or it could be a very dry party.
Dominion is great beer. I especially like their Bourbon Stout (their Stout aged in bourbon soaked casks) and Millenium (barleywine). I even have one of their growlers (which they will NOT fill with Millenium :( ). Of course, I only live about 5 miles from their main brewery :). As a male linux user falling into the "too shy" category (Well, I certainly hope it's not hygiene), allow me a few observations.
A good starting point is with a technical discussion -- something we're comfortable with. On the other hand, I got to know one of my friends after she came up and directly complimented me (a surprise, that) and another after we walked out of a scary movie simultaneously.
Subtle compliments and hints may be all that you're offered -- but a subtle compliment from a shy geek may have more meaning than a bouquet of roses from someone less timid.
So yes, you may have to be much more direct to get the shy ones, rather than allowing the males to come to you. However, if you're looking for integrity and loyalty (and someone who wouldn't even think of mind games or any other such stuff), you really may find us worthwhile.
Btw (for the offended party above), use of "chick" in a male-dominated context such as Slashdot doesn't mean that the word would ever be used to your face. (Not that I'd use it anyhow, but that's just me).
[Heh, I'm not posting this as an AC. Just shy in RL, I suppose]
another post stated that the recipie for the brew would be the source code but.... If I were to say, change my share of the beer (digestion?) and redistribute it, would you want it?

NERDS UNLEASH HOLY TERROR IN SAN JOSE
.. not a yak."
Atrocities "Too Graphic To List", States Police Chief
SAN JOSE, CA (UPI) - Dredging up painful memories of other recent riots in southern California, the city of San Jose was consumed by raucous, drunken nerds last evening, and officials estimate that it will be "quite some time" before the carnage can be cleaned up and life can return back to normal.
The events started off innocently enough. Several readers and contributors to the online nerd Mecca Slashdot were gathered together outside of a Linux convention. Linux is a type of computer that does not have windows and only runs hydroponics simulations software.
However, things got out of hand when the group's ringleader, Rob "CmdrTaco" Malda, began to start playing old The Who bootlegs. When the beer ran out, the party's crazed attendees ruthlessly invaded the liquor cabinet and had drained it completely dry in record time. They then took to the streets, leaving no target untarnished.
"I'm still trying to get those goddamn motorcycles out of my pool," sputtered Howard Johnson, who owns an area Holiday Inn. "I'm going to have to have to drain the whole thing." Johnson then pointed to a screaming toddler that had been hoisted all the way up a nearby flagpole. "That little bastard's mother is still trying to find somebody to get him down. I tell you, kids these days just have no respect for authority."
Edward Hoffman, the chief of police for San Jose, agreed.
"I have seen lots of unruliness in my tenure as police chief," related Hoffman. "But never anything like this. Why, there were literally hundreds of drunken imbeciles running around shouting 'MEEPT!' and inciting general violence." Hoffman said that while the death toll of two victims is relatively low, the emotional scars that this incident has left on witnesses will probably never heal. "There are some things that just stick with a person," he said. "This whole riot is going to be one of them."
"These people were completely insane," said Hoffman. "They were committing acts of depravity that are quite simply too graphic to list." Details are beginning to emerge. Sergeant Dale Smith recanted a gruesome tale involving a nerd, a prostitute named Tangerine, six feet of rubber tubing, a quart of motor oil, and a yak. Smith spoke under the condition of anonymity. Chief Hoffman later confirmed Smith's story.
"A yak," said Hoffman. "That's fucked."
Linus Torvalds, the father of Linux, urged the international community to remain calm. "I would remind you," Mr. Torvalds said through a spokesman, "that under no conditions should these actions be taken as par-for-the-course for Linux users in general. Personally," he continued, "I would have used a gnu

It's "leeching", not "leaching". To those who object that, hey, the important thing is to get the meaning across, remember what happens when you mispell a keyword in a program.

That would explain why you don't have a dating life, referring to us that way... Try being less condescending. It'll do wonders for you. Yes, I'm female, I use Linux, I will be there. You don't have a chance in hell.
This begs the question as to what kind of beer Linux users prefer. As a homebrewer and all-around beer fan, I would be interested in finding out if folks out there prefer real beer over ho-hum, rice-riddled Budwiser, Miller and other "mainstream" brews. Maybe a poll is in order, hmmmm?
Of course, a good many of y'all might prefer wine, tequilla, or other spirits--or maybe there's a lot of tee-totalers out there as well!
Just a thought...

The Slashdot Bash will be HUGE with the chicks I bet!
Any idea if they will be doing this at the show in Atlanta too??
I'm fairly introverted, and have a hard time meeting people at parties, except for a couple of things:
:)
(1) if i know most of the people there;
(2) if i'm there with a clsoe friend who is more extroverted than me
(3) if I have a role in the event (the parties at BorCon were fun because i was working there, so I could always fall back on that role if i needed it).
If I go to LinuxWorld --- that is, if work lets
me go --- I'll go to the party.

Let me just say that it is super wierd throwing your own bash at a conference instead of just leaching off everyone else's, but hey, free beer, right?
When you say "free beer", do you mean beer that is free in the sense of "libre", or beer that is free in the sense of "gratis"? I urge those of you reading this not to drink the beer unless Andover is willing to provide the recipe (a kind of "source code" for food) and details on its brewing process (a kind of "compilation" for beverages) for this beer.
is the beer going to be covered by GPL?

The trick is to get as extroverted as possible (for some people, the free beer helps ;-)) and make sure that there aren't any total strangers in your vicinity. Just don't drink too much, or your reputation might preceed you (voice of experience here =( )
Bummer man!!!!! I'll be sure to drink your share of it. Can't let free beer go to waste even if it's Buttwiper. Free comes with a price, as in headaches and bad gas if ya know what I mean. :)
