GAWD, if my users aren't smart enough to understand me when I say DO NOT download and/or run Comet Cursor (specifically, in bullitens, several of them), then how the hell do I expect them to understand how to use even GNOME?
Yes, I was thinking the same thing. I'm working on a routine that will let me use the CC to scan barcodes on parts in our parts room, so we can keep a live inventory (everything is done on paper now, ick). I dunno which will be funnier, though, when I ask everyone here to go to ratshack to get a free CC, or when everyone shows up at the same store at the same time (after work).
I've noticed the same thing. I refuse, however, to be a west side yuppie. Clear Lake/Deer Park is where my soul lives. Actually, I'm making arrangements to move to the north side of town, to somewhat lessen my hour commute. I wish I knew of you before I pretty much committed myself. Interested in moving to Humble?:)
The way I see this issue somewhat parallels my views on communism vs democracy. Theoretically, at least the way I see it, communism is the most effecient political system. Unfortunately, the base assumptions are not solid.
Primarily, it relies on the assumption that people in positions of power become corrupt. Experiences are showing that this trend is even more true with corporations than with people.
Secondarily, it assumes that everyone is focused on the same goals, for example, a communist nation that completely focuses spare resources on building a habitable space station assumes that's a priority for all citizens. Similarly, SDMI assumes that I'm always going to use a commercially-produced/blessed player. This is not necessarily the case (re the DeCSS issues).
Basically, I'm saying that SDMI sounds like a great idea for some ways, but I can guarantee that it will be implemented in ways inconsistent with my listening desires within my fair use rights, and it will ultimately be abused, much as the current media distribution channels are. And just like I've done with communism, while SDMI sounds very patriotic and feel-good, I'm going to have to "vote" against it.
I've been trying to find people interested in this, but nobody on the gnutella message boards is seriously interested.
I've been toying with ways to use IM with public key authentication/encryption/etc, and such. I also know of a group working on rebuilding the IRCd protocol based on gnutella (for the servers only). Sorry, they don't have a web page.
What the hell do you mean MAY? You damned couch potato, get off your lazy consumer ass and write your congressional rep, both senators, and anybody in the FCC you can get the name of. This is one thing that really pisses me off about the average slashdotter, all you do is sit there and complain, when it takes almost NO effort to DO something to make a difference. Is it just too hard, because you can't pick up a damned remote control and press a couple of buttons to have the for letter read from your head and zipped up there? Stop being a pig consumer and assert the rights that many of our ancestors died to give to your lazy self-serving ass.
Would you consider a robots.txt to be an access control mechanism? Doesn't that mean that the aggressive spiders (or operators thereof) are violating the DMCA? Yeah, a stretch, more for laugh value.
What's the likelihood of using a TiVo (with its nice little linux kernel) to host and run DeCSS with the MPEG decoder software included? Of course it would have to be released GPL . . . Takers?
IE checks for a link in the web page header, , for an icon named favicon.ico in first the domain root, then the page directory. Make sure the icon is 256 colors, 32x32.
I hope to God I never live in a city-biodome. But yeah, I think a far future goal of these projects (at least it is for my indivudual fumblings) is to allow a PAN to interface with a wireless WAN. Think (sorry, but the analogue is right here) the Star Trek PADDs, no wires, always connected.
I don't know what you're talking about, but a lot of the classes I acually went to had a packet with the syllabus of a book or two (entire book, not a few pages) for the class.
Actually, that's required to keep backward compatability with Linux Samba servers. The namespace IS flat, because everything is stored in a flat directory for more effecient searching. I believe the actual namespace (the GUID) is about 23 trillion entries max. Usernames COULD be reused, but a check is implemented to prevent security issues when accessing third-party resources (eg linux samba). Note that if you have your AD set up right, all you need to provide is distinctly identifying information, like your full name, or initials (if unique).
What happened to the old practice of copying your work, sealing it, and mailing it to yourself? It's been used in court countless times to prove pre-existing art (more accurately, in the art cases, that artist X had it before artist Y "composed" it).
It sounds nice, sure, but like the story says, I think it's going to be a little too late. Perhaps if it was out a little earlier, to compete with the PS2, it would have a good run, but I predict that it will not be all that hot (anyone remember the TurboGrafx16? - sorry, best link I could find).
Given that it's already a little underpowered, at least for high-quality gaming (specs), I don't think it has that long a life. My money is on the Nintendo GameCube and my lust for the rumored metroid game.
Actually, with win2k, you can not install devices (any device, PCI, USB, etc) unless you're logged in with appropriate privledges (generally local administrator, or have grandfathered admin rights). This was one of my major reservations about using NT5, and I've seen it met.
What you're looking for, sir, is IDE RAID. Connect a few, partition is as you like logically. Unfortunately, if you're going to spend that much, you should go with SCSI.
I like the offices I have now. Got my own room, and the inner lair, AKA The Server Room. The absolute best thing about it is that the flourescent lights are under my sole control, and therefore never turn on.
If I had total control over everything, though, I think I'd go for a tropical beach mansion look (you know, the kind drug lords live in?). With free drinks (with the little umbrellas in them, and some alcohol, I code a LOT better when I'm a little tipsy).
This was a long time ago, so I'm sketchy on the detail, but I know I played a beta or something of SMB3 an an arcade in Orlando about three months before that movie came out.I had no idea what it was, or what the funny looking letters meant, it the final US release was a little different, but I could have sworn it was out.
Actually I had the same thing happen on my first install (they lost my line order sheet and disconnected me three times in total). I had five months of free DSL. It was only DHCP, but I got unlimited IPs. The GREAT thing is that it was uncapped (at the 1.5 mbps) so I got a full 6 mbps on some nights. I was in hog heaven.

You sure? Yesterday or so, I saw supposed screen shots.
Oh, here we go, a little digging on IGN gives us the . Read it and weep. Samus is back, man.

Ignore the gayrod flash embedded on the page.
