I had a brainstorm just yesterday (yes, they are rare events :-). You have a P2P frontend that communicates via an email transport layer that uses fake emails that resemble spam, but actually contain encrypted stegnographic data. Will AOL get suspicious when you receive 10 MBs of "spam" every day? :-)

  11. Re:removing some utilities on BSDCon '03 Nearly Here (OpenBSD 3.4, Too) · · Score: 3, Interesting

absolutely! The BSD license implicitly encourages companies to share patches "upstream" because it will make future forking easier. The companies that used "forked" BSD software do not want to maintain tons of separate bug fixes in a different codebase. They just want to copy other people's work. That sounds "evil", but it does provide a strong incentive to share a common codebase.

If Unix had instead mmap'd files in it's original design there would probably not be transparent access to network file systems or many of the other things we take for granted today.

Why would mmap'd files prevent transparent network access? mmap'd files is just a shortcut to random file I/O. Plus there are systems that support distributed virtual memory.

I don't understand what PROBLEM these electronic voting systems are intended to solve. Usability? Fraud prevention? Recountability? Non-centralized weakness? For ALL of those supposed problems, these electronic voting systems are WORSE than paper ballots.

The only advantage I see is that the electronic systems can count ballots faster, but we've never had problems with the speed of ballot counting. Ballot counting is easily parallelized across all voting precincts across the nation. In fact, that is a GOOD thing because the counting process is publicly overseen by representatives from all political parties and vote tampering is limited to a smaller set of votes.
