Google already scares me a little. If you look at Google Labs, their Google Sets and WebQuotes already show simple "knowledge" of real world items.
Most AI research projects (like Cyc) face is a huge problem: data entry. All facts and rules must be manually entered by human operators. What if you could connect an Cyc-like AI frontend to Google's world-knowledge backend? Sure, much of the Internet is porn, spam, scams, banner ads, and lies, but Google already relies on PageRank of reliable sites to weed out the truth.
I disagree. The system you are talking about is called T9 Text Input. I find that it usually gets the word right. I think this system would work better if it was adaptable, learning which words are most common for ME on MY phone. I wonder if the T9 dictionary of word frequencies is publicly available..
I believe Mac OS X borrows from NetBSD's userland programs, not FreeBSD. Ironically, Mac OS X borrows from FreeBSD code for the Mach kernel's BSD "server".
free music! hmm, if the RIAA can sue Napster for enabling users to download free music, can the RIAA sue Apple or Microsoft if security holes in their music services enable users to download free music?
Maybe there is no Quark release date? How many YEARS has Quark flailed simply trying to port QuarkXpress from Mac OS 9 to Mac OS X? When 64-bit Mac OS X 1.3 Panther is released later this year, how much would you bet that QuarkXpress's code is not 64-bit ready? Back to the drawing board for Quark!
There has not been a killer app since the introduction of the web browser in the early '90s.
I disagree. I think post-browser killer apps include Napster, Winamp, and IM. You might argue that these are not new ideas, but I think many killer apps reuse a good idea but with some new twist that makes the market (finally) take notice.
sigh, this is just so wrong. Mac OS X does not have ext2 FS support. UNIX File System != Linux ext2 file system. Mac OS X's UNIX File System is based on BSD's FFS.
Now terrorists will slip onto US planes carry hundreds of cell phones. Tweezers? Not allowed! Cell phones? a-ok!
I had read elsewhere that the problem with cell phones in airplanes was actually a problem for cell phone carriers. When you are in the air, your cell phone's signal would be picked up by hundreds of cell towers on the ground. This would overload the cell phone carrier's system and also make tracking and charging of user minutes much more difficult.
On Windows NT, the first 64 KB and the last 64 KB (before the 2 GB line) are mapped no-access. This is not a waste of memory because there is no page there. It is a waste of address space, though.
This reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where George wants to "borrow" Jerry's deaf girlfriend to read people's lips. George and Jerry try to hide their lips from her as they discuss her lip-reading abilities, then she can read their lips anyway.
If device drivers were written in Scheme, then the same device driver could (possibly) work on an other OS that supported the Schemix driver API. You could have one device driver that works on Linux, Windows, BSD,...
well, the same quote says, "Microsoft led in worldwide shipments of embedded operating systems for 2002." Presumably "shipments" is counting units sold or manufactured, not revenue.
Too bad they are protected by Windows Server 2003.
Google gains self awareness.

why doesn't Slashdot add its OWN Amazon or BN referral id and collect the money? I'm sure they could use the extra revenue.
1. Post story on Slashdot
2. Change referral id to Slashdot (STEP #2 FINALLY REVEALED!!)
3. PROFIT!!
You mean like how 3Com just moved their headquarters from California to Massachusetts? Let the exodus begin..
3Com to move its headquarters Marlborough, Mass., to become home
no, Windows 95 copied Mac OS X.
I do spend more debugging time on compiler issues than my own bugs.
what compiler are you using?

if(pointer=NULL) is always false, sir. Plus, you want to check for non-NULL, not NULL, if you want a one line fix.

Last I heard, marijuana was still legal.
responsible for 45% of traffic
But spam is responsible for, what was it Taco, 60% of traffic on networks?
Microsoft's patches obviously contain spam! I would consider desktop icons for AOL or MSN count to be spam.
