  1. I don't understand why people like term limits. on Shooting Lawsuit Against id Software Dismissed · · Score: 2

If politicians have no term limits, then they have NO accountability to their constituents! If politicians have to earn their constituents support, wouldn't they be better representatives? I understand there is the large gray area of money: PACs, lobbyists, soft money, campaign costs.

I've seen news editorials dissing elected politicians for changing their votes on certain issues to "get more votes". Huh?? These people would rather elect a politician with "solid values" than a polictician who is DIRECTLY REPRESENTING their constituents' voiced opinions (via polls)!

  2. What is the alternative to a major label deal? on Chuck D Gives Props To Napster · · Score: 2

That Steve Albini article was very enlightening (and depressing). He doesn't propose any alternatives or solutions to the major label problems. With his experience in the music biz, shouldn't he have more to say? Is the answer to simply avoid major label deals and work with indie labels? Or is his answer to simply work for 7-11?

  11. so true! on Full-Time Telecommuting -- Does It Work? · · Score: 2

I have been working at home (as a software developer) for about eight months now. My company's "office" is super small and has no carpet or wallpaper. Working at home is nice, but sometimes there are too many distractions. And like you said, it is easy to feel cooped up. I live in Seattle, so it's hard to get out of the house when it's raining all the time! :-( I also miss out on some of those important, imprompto design meetings with other developers. For all it's problems, I don't think I'll ever want to go back to strict 9-to-5 office hours.

  13. So had Fermat actually proved his own theorem?? on Grok Goldbach, Grab Gold · · Score: 2

Andrew Wiles' proof of FLT runs into the hundreds of pages and makes use of vast tracts of number theory, some dating back hundreds of years. It can probably only be understood in full by a handful of top mathematicians.

Now that FLT has been proven, what about Fermat's comment about his "great proof"? Do modern mathematicians believe he was joking? Or did he have some different, simpler proof? That he would have the same lengthy page proof seems unlikely, but it would definitely fit the description of "too large for the margin of this book"! ;-)

  14. Zero is neither odd nor prime. on Grok Goldbach, Grab Gold · · Score: 2

An odd number is some integer (n*2)+1. There is no integer that will satisify 0 = (n*2)+1. Therefore, zero is not odd (it's even).

A prime number is some integer that is divisble only by 1 and itself. Since a denominator of zero is undefined, zero cannot divided itself. Therefore, zero is not prime.

  15. yes, WinCE is difficult to compile on Microsoft Trying To Look Open Source With CE · · Score: 5

I briefly worked at a company that writes WinCE compilers and build tools for Microsoft. Microsoft outsources these projects to other companies. Compiling a WinCE kernel requires many batch files and a custom IDE called Microsoft Windows CE Platform Builder to edit the (ugly) config files. The Platform Builder IDE is based on the source code for Microsoft Visual Studio 5.0 (yes it's old code). This Microsoft C++ code was literally the worst code I have ever seen/debugged! I'm not exaggerating. I'm talking about C++ classes with 50+ public methods and 20+ public data members! Microsoft has no concept of modularity or data encapsulation.

  16. Would this be any help to the WINE project? on Microsoft Trying To Look Open Source With CE · · Score: 2

  17. This is the same strategy as Microsoft Mars! on Corel To Launch Linux PCs With Intel · · Score: 2

Microsoft will release IE 5.5 this summer, but I heard rumors that there will be no IE6. IE will completely disappear inside Windows. The next version of MSN is codenamed "Mars". Mars is hybrid of IE, Microsoft's Neptune UI, and an AOL-ripoff. Here's a Mars screenshot from a John Dvorak article about Mars .

Mars is just a local, non-web-based "portal". I can't see any advantages Mars has over web-based MyYahoo-like personalized portals. It's like the Labrea tar pits for getting customers stuck in the Microsoft mud.. er, innovations. And why those sickly dayglo colors?? Microsoft must think that all AOL users are teeny-boppers.

the best solution I heard about the DNS lookup was for the root servers to each handle one letter, the first letter of the TLD. Under such a system, all traffic for .com, .cool, .ca, and so on, would be directed to the "C" server for resolution.

If a separate root server was used for each letter of the alphabet, then your Z server would be a lot busier (serving .com) than your Z server. Even if there were freeform TLDs, the names would not be evenly distributed over the alphabet.

If their USB specs were free (or better yet they wrote reference code for USB device drivers), there would be more software support for USB. USB would wind itself into many operating systems and the customer pool for USB hardware would grow!
