OK, but what is he going to do next? If he feels so strongly about this, why did he not remain in his position and use that power more constructively? This isn't likely to be put in front of the E.U. parliament before June so who is this going to notice this 'falling on my sword act' apart from those who already oppose this, i.e. Slashdotters and the like. I'll gladly eat my words if this makes national news anywhere.

We all use faerie gold already, the reason it works is not because it's worth anything, it's because enough people believe it's worth something. Money hasn't been worth anything since the gold standard was dropped. While I don't believe that FB money will ever take off in a meaningful way I also thought the Spice Girls were going to be a one hit wonder. There's no accounting for taste.

If they do that then they're no longer the Pirate Party, they're just another crap political party doing crap stuff and making crap deals to stay in power. They'll become what they despise.

Taking an interest in important issues other than copyright makes them crap and corrupt instantly? Wow.

I was very impressed with the German Pirate Parties success last year, but if the UK PP wants to emulate it then it needs to be more vocal, and on a wider range of topics. If they don't they'll never get the attention of anyone who isn't already passionate about copyright abuses, or the attention of any part of the UK electorate that automatically dismiss the party because of the fact they have Pirate in thier name.

I thought I would be commenting on the lack of classic games such as Tetris or Elite (although I am), I am more annoyed by the lack of platforms, no spectrum 48, 128, 16( I had a 16k at one point, I had bought the 48k but the shop 'accidentally' gave me the wrong one), or otherwise in the '8 bit era'. C64 is in there, is it more colouful and therefore more arty than the speccy perhaps? Then of course 'Bit Wars' no Atari ST or Amiga, It seems to me that whoever is making these arbitary decisions is not only console-centric but has chosen most of his/her platforms and games by consulting a narrow spectrum ( no pun intended ) of sources.

At least they have included a text adventure at some point 'Bards Tale III', they truly were an art form! Anyone remember 'Behind Closed Doors'. For those that don't it was a single room text adventure in which you were superglued to the toilet seat and had to escape. Hours of fun!.

Can't wait for the Smithsonian to let us all vote for our 'favorite war of the Middle Ages', mine's the Crusades. What do you mean that one's not in the poll?

  11. Unforseen Consequences in Elite II on Balancing Choice With Irreversible Consequences In Games · · Score: 1

I remember many years ago playing Elite II on my beloved and much missed Atari STE, I'd got a little bit bored doing the usual trade runs, robots spare parts etc, and I decided to do a couple of slave runs in a couple of finge systems. Anyway, after buying my first consignment of slaves I took off, and once in orbit I did the usual checks, Fuel, Navigation, and Inventory etc. I did a double take when the inventory showed I had 20 tonnes of fertilizer but no slaves! Had I been ripped off by the trader (obviously unscrupulous slave trader) on the surface? Was that even possible in the game world? After much head scratching I still couldn't work it out so I checked the price of fertilizer on the trading boards to see if I could cut my losses slightly, the answer was a resounding no, so I dumped my cargo. To my great surprise I saw that the 'fertilizer' looked remakably like hundreds of human bodies floating through space.

After another round of checks I found out what happened, I had not installed the cargo hold of my ship with life support! At the time I was very impressed with the attention to detail that went in to that game, I still am today, I could have gone back to another save point and done it again but that would of pissed all over the intentions of the game, it would wiped out something and negated the thing I was supposed to learn, my experience and my immersion in that game would've been tainted.

I've got probably got at least half a dozen little 'intersting'(depends who you are i guess) anecdotes from that game and I haven't played another game in the last 20 years(my god it really was that long ago) that has given me an experience like Elite II. I wish I still had the maps (came in the box) and an emulator so that I could play it without suffering those godawfull frame rates if you were treated to if you fought anything larger than a boiled egg! Sigh....

I completely agree that people, which ever 'mob' they belong to have a right to protest, and even when they are denied the legal right to protest have a responsiblity to protest. However with a large proportion of the public not knowing which side to believe, then how you make your point is quite important.

Consider how the media is reporting the DDOS atacks on VISA and Paypal, as Cyber Attacks by 'Hackers' and cyber warfare. Great sensationalism for the media, but is it going to do the cause of Wikileaks, of freedom of speech any good? As far as the avarage joe is concerned the attacks are being made by allies of Wikileaks, not by some self appointed revenge mob.

I'm not saying do nothing by any stretch of the imagination, simply consider the effect of what you do and why.
