I have the same problem with the y and z switched.
(I temporarily map my keyboard to german to get my homework done.)
It only takes a couple minutes to get used to. But it is still funny as shit to watch idiots get hung up with such things on their computer. (Try some of those creeping/jumping icon programs for windows!)
Answer to one:
It boots windows first, then gives you the choice of windows or QNX. I just barely installed it on a windows 98 box with linux on a separate partition. QNX did nothing to lilo or to my linux partition(s).
that was a fast install... I'm impressed so far. I'm going to play around with QNX at work for a while..
You say that Linux can not overcome it's shortcommings, and that IT IS NOT A DESKTOP OS... what exactly qualifies as a desktop OS??
Is it an operating system that shelters the user from the underlying system? Is it an OS that does not burden the user with any learning? Is it an OS that has pretty little buttons and widgets grafted and pasted into the inner workings of the system.
I for one, believe that Unix (in general) can be both a desktop, and a server... it is adaptable. The modular design is what makes it that way. Things like KDE and Gnome are more like extra layers on the cake, but what do you expect? That everything should come in a perfect little package, in one homogenious mixture... a cookie cutter OS? The purpose of these linux distributions is to bring everything together. Sure, I could build a linux system from scratch, but it is much easier to download or get a CD and run a quick install.
they have no incentive to switch from Windows
This is purely because of user stupidity. Plain and simple. The common user is both fearful and stupid. (I really mean that.) People will not change because they are afraid of it, because they hate learning. The number one question is "what if xx will not run under linux?". But this is no excuse to write everything off and say that everyone should stick with windows. Windows is pure crap...
things like BeOS, Linux, *BSD, and even OSX need to push this trash off the desktop. The day I see the majority scorn windowsand avoid it, is the day the sun will rise upon a better world.
Hey, nothing's perfect.. but people shouldn't give up and leave these powerful OS's in the server rooms and on the desktops of the minority. Take the windows attitude: "It's good enough" -- though take it one step further, "but it can be better". And spread it. I'm sick as hell of everyone thinking computer==windows.
Last time I installed redhat (and mandrake), I recall the choice being left up to the user as to which services to run at start up. (the dialog was presented near the end of the install.) This may be available if you choose the "custom" option, as opposed to workstation/server/etc.
A quick run of linuxconf, and going to control service activity should present a simple interface for beginners to close things down. (provided that they at least start to RTFM.)
On mandrake, a quick msec 5 should lock things down like a prison. I may be wrong, but it seems that even a newbie should not have a hard time making a clean install reasonably secure.
Of course, no matter how much I brag about how secure my linux machines are, and how much time I spend securing them... I'm sure that there's some prick out there who could bring my whole network down.
Obviously, you are trolling... but I am replying anyway.
I'll get right to my point:
I don't give a damn shit about these "standards"
Declaring a desktop or an OS as standard is pure crap. There is no freedom involved in that. I don't want things tied down to kde, gnome, windows, mac, BSD, amiga, or whatever. Make standards that are cross platform and flexible. Period.
To CmdrTaco and all others that dual boot (or should I make a bad/stupid pun and say duel boot.) to windows for DVD's, favorite games, etc. More power to you. Personally, I'm glad that I don't waste 3 gigs per computer on the slime and filth of the baggage of a second OS (windows).
Do it illegally, push to make it legal. Use DeCSS, watch your DVD's under linux or your OS of choice...
But don't fucking complain when your easy solution is to spend a lot of money to have windows on your machine. Standards? Bah...
Give them an old pentium 100 to play with. They will always look down upon linux.
In my office, I had 1 extra pentium 90, and one very whiny coworker always complaining about windows crashing. I said "try this", and he willingly did so.
A few days later, he wouldn't touch the thing. Because it was too slow obviously it's faster than windows 98 on the same computer, but he didn't seem to realize that. Instead, he installed star office, and compared it to how fast microsoft office ran on his Pentium III 500.
I tried, but I could not seem to explain to him the gigantic performance difference between the two computers and how it was relevant.
In other words, help others out, but don't get them to expect a damn miracle. Use those old computers for masq gates and stuff, demo linux on high performance hardware.

I've lived in southern Utah, and it's dry too.. and it's just like living on mars. (hotter of course.)
For crying out loud! When are they going to get @home installed on that thing??
A good way to solve that is to buy some refreshments at the theater, then sneak in to to the movie.
:)
They gouge you enough with the $7 popcorn anyways. Now you can keep the theater in business, plus not give your money to time warner.
Once again, problem solved.
Sneak into the movie without paying for it.
Problem solved!
What would scare me is the fact that the empire regulation data ports, and empire regulation power sockets have the exact same interface!
Maybe I ought to wire some of the RJ-45 ports in my office for 220 just to prevent any unauthorized laptops or droids from haX0ring my network.
Last thing I need is R2D2 mounting some open SMB share.
I'm just glad that I don't play pranks like that at work. Especially considering that I am responsable for the infrastructure there.
My linux/windows mixed network has enough problems already without me having to worry about more.

... I like my trusty old grey DEC HiNote Ultra 2000.
Almost as thin as a vaio, and less than half the price.
More can be had about this, and other urban legends/hoaxes/tall tales/whatever:

That's a code some idiot would put on his luggage.
okay, dumb joke.

When I get an attachment, entitled winmail.dat, I promptly ignore it. Serves as a great way for me to be arrogant.
.. "nope, didn't get it. Oh well, maybe you need to upgrade your email client."
"I thought I sent you the timesheet"
Big deal, this is not news... move along please.

Pedophiles usually end up abducting children because no sane parent is going to let an adult take their little child off to have sex.
Even the more "benign" pedophiles collect child pornography, which definately hurts children. Even if less children are hurt, it is still no excuse.
For the majority of pedophiles who keep it to themselves... good for them. Make sure it stays that way.
Scum like you is why I can't let kids play outside without direct supervision.

Not at all.... mobile pentium 266.
Forget those fancy PIII's on laptops, marvel at my 8 hour battery life.
