I hope your daughter doesn't go off the rails when she leaves home. When you grow up with that amount of regimentation a little freedom can be intoxicating.
It really blows that 100 people can RUIN what millions watch...
According to them they have 700,000 members (4th to last paragraph). But it looks like that's the total number of members ever, not the current number. Apparently these people are above little things like telling the truth. Classic sign that they are a bunch of fanatics.
FTA: We ultimately want to see internet TV Channels that download video in the background and let you watch at your convenience (a TiVo for the internet).
Why do you need internet channels when there's a perfectly legimate tv network already in place?
The article is not about "Internet TiVo". The submittor shouldn't have even mentioned that, since now virtually every highly moderated post has missed the point of the article. The article is about BlogTorrent making it cheap and easy for independent artists to distribute their work. Among other things, Reville wants to see independent video shows created and distributed via the net, in a way that would mimic the functionality of TiVo.
To answer your question, we need internet channels because the current networks are inaccessible to most people (in terms of distributing content). There are already plenty of public access, student run, and regional TV channels that are relatively easy to get involved with, but there is still a cost involved and those channels usually reach only limited audiences. With BlogTorrent Reville is hoping to reduce the costs of distributing content to almost nothing, and provide a much larger potential audience.
I know you're a genius, and that us little people should kneel before you, but the concept of jacking into a computer is a lot older than the Matrix and something us geeks have talked about for a very long time. The fact that I use the Matrix to talk about jacking in doesn't make my arguments any less worthy of consideration - just like the fact that Martin Fowler uses Smalltalk to explain XP techniques sometimes doesn't make it any less applicable to Java, C++ or any other object-oriented language (even though to some Smalltalk is more fiction than fact).
None of this has any bearing on the fact that what characters in The Matrix could or couldn't do has nothing to do with what might or might not be possible in reality.
First, you missed a syllable. I could probably make some joke about your thinking ability, but I won't.
Good thing, or I might be forced to make fun of your punctuation.
Second, hand-eye reaction time (reacting right when the guy runs in front of you), hand-eye coordination(actually aiming in the right place to hit the guy), and fast thinking (hey! i should shoot that guy now) are three interconnected, but different skills.
Not in the context of this story. The poster I replied to seemed believe that the advantage that good players have is physical - it's not, it's mental, and there is no reason to expect that advantage to disappear when using this brain-machine interface. The speed of brain activity that currently manifests as good hand-eye coordination and fast reactions will probably manifest as faster control via this interface.
If you want to legally acquire those TV shows then tape then (even on to a computer with a TV tuner or TiVo). You don't have any right to own copies of TV shows just because you saw them once or anything like that.
Preemptive response: Just because you don't think it will financially impact any of the copyright holders doesn't make it legal or morally sound.
I don't see a lot difference (morally) between recording a show and acquiring (for free) someone else's recording of that show. Want to explain it to me?
Copyright infringement is illegal. But so is parking in the wrong place. It's not a black and white issue.
So I'm still not convinced that this isn't just a natural fluctuation in the climate, althought is is probably not completely unaffected by human activity.
"Natural or not?" doesn't really matter when you get down to it. What matters is "can we do something about it?" and "is it in our best interests to do something about it?". If you accept that human activity is contributing to the problem then we certainly can do something about it, so that just leaves "should we?". Given that our agriculture is optimized for our current climate, I think there is a very strong case for doing what we can as soon as possible. The economic consequences of most warming scenarios are staggering.
the temperatures of summer 2003 were almost undoubtedly the highest in Europe for over 500 years
800 years ago they were growing grapes for wine in northern England. So it used to be hotter than this before the heavy industrial pollutants.
800 > 500, what's your point? The fact that the global climate has been naturally warmer in the past has no bearing on whether or not it's a good idea to try to curb the trend now.
Why is the not modded off topic? Or are you seriously suggesting that large groups of scientists are blaming humanity of contributing to global warming because of a psychological response?
I'm not saying it's trivial. I'm just saying that "where to draw the line" is not a hard decision. I'd rely on groups such as Spamhaus to determine the validity of targets.
Anyone applauding Lycos for this had better be ready to draw the line somewhere on that list above and defend why their line is the absolute correct one in language all can agree on or that line will creep down at Internet speed.
Quite simple: those who attack me first get attacked in response.
hard disk manufacturers see no reason stick to the power of 2 system that RAM manufacturers use
I very much doubt they just thought to themselves "why use the standard definitions everyone else does". No, someone thought "if we redefine megabytes to mean 10^6 bytes instead of 2^20 bytes we can make our drives look 5% larger than they really are (7.5% in the case of gigabytes)". The rest of the manufacturers just followed suit.
You know what the latest dodgy marketing strategy from harddrive manufacturers is? They quote sound levels in bels, instead of the decibels that are used in every other application ever conceived. Why? Because 2.5 bels looks better on the specs than 25 decibels. It's dishonest really.
It is a vaccine. You obviously don't know what the word means.

but i believe Canadian drug patents are good for ~5 years and US patents are ~8 years
No, the patent durations are more like 15-20 years. A lot of that time is used up by clinical trials though.
after that time, companies like novopharm and other generic producing companies, can start churning out generics. even the big brand name companies (ie pfizer) have generic producing lines. this is primarily for overseas markets.
It's not primarily for overseas markets at all. It's purely a matter of if a particular market segment will generate a profit for a company with a generic product (considering the reduced prices due to competition).
Not necessarily. Another example of a vaccine of this type is the rabies vaccine. It is given after a person may have been exposed to the virus, but before symptoms appear.
But unless they are on to something completely different, there will be little hope for those already infected.
Don't let your inaccurate idea of what "vaccine" means color your logic.

China wants to be firewalled off from the rest of the world. North Korea too, I imagine.
I'm often looking for reviews of a particular item, and -price tends to eliminate them unfortunately.

The X-38 looks a lot like SS1, but was intended to be a CRV (crew return vehicle) for the ISS. Maybe SS1 can be scaled up to oribital use?
