. using your car analogy, you have a new type of Toyota with an engine held in by a "security bolt". all hots did is GIVE AWAY the DESIGN of a socket that would fit on the "security bolt". some people then used this to remove the engine in the Toyota and replace it with something that generates a EMP pulse that disables cars within 2 miles.

technically (as proven in court OVER AND OVER again) Hotz did nothing Illegal. So why does he have a permanent injunction on him now? Sony should be drawn and quartered for unethical use of the legal system to harass, and yet Hotz is the one who is treated like he had done something wrong.

A photograph has a value, just a lot lower than what you think it is. The value of the item is not in how much someone thinks its worth or how much it cost them to produce, but how much someone is willing to pay. if a newspaper pays you $1000 for your photo it will be because they couldn't get a similar photograph cheaper elsewhere, not because they feel they owe you for $1000 worth of your picture.

If no-one is to be paid for their photography, who will be around to take photos?

i have a problem with this logic

the assumption is that if we do away with copyright, then no one will be willing to pay someone money to do a job that requires skill / creative talent.

but I'm not sure if you realized you just proved why you would still have a job.

Oh, yeah, every Tom, Dick and Harry with a cell phone, right! Yeah, those will be some quality photos.

. people will still pay for high quality photographers to take high quality pictures, you just wont be able to make as much money from once off work by ad hearing to artificial scarcity.

now don't get me wrong, i certainly don't blame you for wanting to receive money that the legal system defines as owed to you, you're just playing the game. I am to, if i make something that gets copyrighted, I'd use the law to make sure i get as much money as possible, i need to eat too. But I still think that artificial scarcity is just going to hurt the industry in the long run, especially when trying to compete against countries that won't play the same game you are and ignore any "rules" you set up to play by.

You only end up hurt your own countrymen, although time and time again America has shown that its quite willing to hurt its own people for an abscure moral / political motive (war against drugs, war against air travel, etc. )

However I disagree with the consideration that emails on a web server that are 6 months old on are abandoned.. i have 6 year old emails on the web that i still refer to occasionally, with a push to the more efficient cloud computing its important to recognize this, a web based email account should be considered the same as a PO box as far as privacy is concerned.

The part where your just making things up without understanding how physics works.

horsepower is work, and torque is force, the other word for work is "power". and yes, horsepower is what engines create. they create a twisting force(torque) at a particular rate(rpm), which equates to power. the faster the engine spins the more you can gear the rotation down to produce a higher amount of torque at the wheels at a particular speed.

    technical example:

your cars engine puts out 10nm of torque at 10rpm, with a gear at 1:1 that means that the rear wheels would be putting down 10nm of torque at 10rpm as well. however, if my car puts down 5nm of torque at 40rpm, with a gear ratio of 4:1, the rear wheels would be putting down 20nm of torque at 10rpm. you can't get the same amount of performance out of the higher torque engine without sacrificing speed.

your computer analogy doesn't work, better to use something like ohms law for a more accurate representation.

eg, you have 2 lightbulbs, both rated at 100watt of light output (same unit engines are mesured in), in my country i have 240v mains power, and in yours you would have 120v. this means that to produce 100watts of power, your lightbulb has to pass through twice as many amps to get the same wattage output as mine.

conversly my car would need to rev twice as fast with half the power to produce the same amount of "work" or forward acceleration.

If you can't get your head around that, accept the fact that the camry engine puts out 257 lbft anyway, so even if it was all down to "torque" i'm still right.
