  1. What I did... on Home Server Rooms? · · Score: 4, Informative

Well, I recently converted what used to be a 10'x6' pantry in my basement into a server room.

I tore out all of the old shelves, and picked up a bunch of nicer ones from Revy to hold my main servers and my (still nonfunctional) cluster, and screwed them into one of the longer walls. Opposite that, I used some of the old shelves to
make a small workbench, and I left room to add 2 or 3 racks (not that I'll ever need that much space) at a later date. It works really well, and because it used to be a pantry, and 2 of the walls are bare concrete, as is the floor, its stays down right COLD in there, even with 10 or so boxes going.

As has been said here already, apache, mysql, and most other *nix / Open Source software, does not run a root.

IIS runs under FULL system privilages, so a pretty simple exploit gives you full access to the system.

Open Souce code, particularly the higher profile stuff like apache, linux kernels, and whatnot have countless people looking over the code, squashing bugs, and plugging holes. This approach seems to work better than a (comparably) small team at MS, where a lot of the code probably is only seen by the coder working on it, and perhaps glanced over by his/her manager.

I have to agree with the poster that stated ASM first, and move up from there. I think there are a lot of 'programmers' out there who simply can't handle stuff like ASM or even C (I work with some of these people).

I feel that, while you're not likely to need to code assembly in most jobs these days, if you're comfortable with it, and uderstand how you're systems work on that most basic level, you can be a FAR better programmer.

As an admin, I do understand the point of view of the ISP's techs, who in all likelyhood take any question about their security VERY personally. In this situation however, the ISP is simply stupid, and it's nothing short of a miracle than noone else found and exploited this obvisous hoe in the system.

The Legal community really doesnt understand technology or technological issues like most of us do, and lawmakers themselves are pretty well ignorant about these things. The ISP's logs should show what you were up to (if they were loggin it like good little admins though leaving something that open, odds are pretty good that they're equally dumb about logging) and show that you weren't doing anything mallicious.
