  1. My Experience on the Subject. on Java as a CS Introductory Language? · · Score: 1
I've just finished my second year student at Glasgow Caledonian University. When I was in first year the first language we learned was Pascal, I still have a nostalgic love for that language. Then in second year we were introduced to C++ to give us a grasp of Object Orientated Programming. Any grasp of what is going on inside the PC was covered briefly in Computer Technology.

The new first years had a change of sylabus, they are taught Java as there introductionary language. From what my friends in that year said I believe they found Java more of a head fuck than the people in my year did with Pascal.

The main problem I feel that the big picture is coming into focus.

IMHO it doesnt matter what language you lecture on its the quality of the lecture. I've came out of this year with my average at 80-90% but I dont know what this means in real world terms, ok so I can display Hello World to the screen, I understand the differences between a class and an object and I know a bunch of algorithms for common tasks (sorting, stacks, linked lists etc.) but what will this get me in the real world? How much more do I need to learn before I can consider myself a programmer?

When they finally do get theres they are gonna find out it has poor DVD playback when they use a Scart cable, in its normal language its a bugger to program for, with BASIC its an insult to iraqi inteligence and the bloody things just droped in price a few days after buying one.

Thats the sort of thing thats just cries "Take advantage of me"

One of AOL's "handy" functions is compressed graphics. It basically checks to see how big an incoming graphics is and if it above a certain size it shrinks it further before sending it your way. This is a total bitch believe me! It make makes using AOL faster but by no means is the image quality any good. It can be turned off after a rake around the menus inside it.

Also cause of the un-movable AOL menu bars it blocks a good bit of the screen making browsing pages a bitch.

So at the end of the day you have a shitty looking small screen. Best to use netscape @ least your keeping it in the family :) WOW! AOL only crashed once while typing up this message, things are on the up....

But games in the UK have been given certificites for a while. Duke Nukem was given a 18, Die Hard Trilogy was given an 18, Soul Blade a 15, X-files game a 15 and Quake was a 15.

SOF is heavy stuff by 2days standards but that standard will no doubt change in 6 months time, eg Duke Nukem featured Bimapped Stippers and red pixels for blood! Slap a 18 on that! Now a days the game would get a 15 at most. But at the time it was "heavy" (for lack of a better term, or lack of sleep, I cant remember which).

But lets face it, if a kid wants a game he just gets him folk 2 buy it for him!
