  1. real-time traffic feed FTW on SignalGuru Helps Drivers Avoid Red Lights · · Score: 1

The camera approach would be useful for off network lights, but I'd rather have a real time feed of all the lights available from the municipalities to build from.

http://imagreendriver.com/ incorporates a real-time feed into our smart phone app. Currently live in Eugene and Portland Oregon. Much of Utah coming online soon.

  2. roman chair and a jump rope on How Do Geeks Exercise? · · Score: 1

I picked up a roman chair and a jump rope from big 5. I do dips, pullups wide, chin ups and leg lifts to failure. Then I do some jump roping for cardio . . . all very doable at home.

Interesting - I went through a similar evolution with Catholocism (gave it up around 10) - I became agnostic rather than aetheistic and now actively pursue meditation and mysticism.

  7. Re:Hmm, so... (internal pharmacy) on Humans Hardwired to Believe in Supernatural Deity? · · Score: 1

Most psychoactive substances have their effect in crossing the blood brain barrier and doing something like binding to receptor sites on neurons down stream, blocking reuptake of neurotransmitters, increasing secretion of neurotransmitters by binding to the sending neuron etc. What's interesting is that the body often has its own chemicals to produce these effects often regulated by our glands. Runner's high for example triggers the release of endorphine (endogenous [from within] morphine). So it need not necessarily be ingested but may in fact merely be internally present and stimulated under the right conditions.

golden rule - "do unto others as you'd have them do unto you"
karma - "as you sew so shall you reap"

These two seem to pop up in some form or another across most major religious traditions.

The worst part about this is that many of these same artists release 'greatest hits' albums which are a similar form of cherry picking . . . I'm glad the chili peppers have albums up now.

  11. a suit is the uniform of business on Paul Graham on PR · · Score: 1

I tend to disagree with the parent post. On some level wearing a suit is akin to wearing a uniform. You kind of represent yourself as a player of the game; you're ready to 'play ball' so to speak. Wearing a suit is also an indication you are willing to set aside your individuality and 'suit up' for the event at hand.

It's the uniform of business today! In the past it was quite literally 'big wigs' . . . it will evolve and mabye we'll even get to the star trek jumpsuit eventually ;-)

  17. here's some examples! on The Incredible Shrinking Recording Studio · · Score: 1

I've been doing this only recently with a laptop, but have been at it for a while with a PC.

A great example of an amazing project recorded with this type of tech is 1 Giant Leap. There's performances with Brian Eno, Michael Stipe, Michael Franti, and some dialogue with Kurt Vonnegut and Dennis Hopper.

After a two week, break my music instructor and I hooked back up and we had both independently purchased 12" G4 powerbooks. Synchronicity! I ran him through a crash course on Reason and he's now got an external firewire sound card. With a couple of mics, soundcard, and his laptop he takes trips to the coast to record his exceptional acoustic guitar playing.

  23. the middle path on Freedom or Power? · · Score: 1

I tend to agree with you.

Its all about a continuum with bill gates representing one polarity and stallman the other. Somewhere there's a middle path to be walked here . . . focusing only on one polarity or the other fails to take into account the whole. Either extreme will not serve our evolution because the polarities must be in a balanced cycle of expansion to progress forward.

Didn't that buddha guy say something about the middle path.

Sometimes its worth the effort to go beyond simple binary/polar thinking :-).

PS MICHAEL your editors note fails to really weigh in as more significant than a comment. Would you consider placing your thoughts in a comment next time?
