Come to Canada. My Cable account never ceases to amaze me. I'm easlily getting speads that beat out a T1, and rival that of a T2.
There's a pretty easy answer to the "piracy threat" -- Dynamic IPs.. all the American cable companies have to do is institute DHCP that expires every day or two.
This is a terrible vulnerability and I've seen it in action.
In IE, some audio formats are set to execute automatically.. so if you send a Content-Type of, say, audio/wav (which is executed automatically).. but the filename is myvirus.exe, windows will rely on associations based on file extensions in the registry to execute the file, as opposed to, say, trying to feed the file through a player.
So it will automatically launch the.exe WITHOUT warning and WITHOUT asking.
/. is one of the only news sites I get a chance to read in the morning. 8 of the last 9 kernel releases I found out from/. (the other one I found simply by browsing the kernel.org ftp). I also get to read the/. community's thoughts and problems with installing said kernel, so I know whether or not to use it or not on my work/development machine.
In short, yes, I do think/. should continue to post news about new kernel releases.
Uhh.. if there's something you don't like about the site, we'll fix it. I just can't understand what it is you're babbling about. We "employee a 1 refresh".. what is that supposed to mean?
I work for a registrar here in BC, Canada called SearchBC.com, and in my experience NSI = one huge headache! They decline transfers for no apparent reason, and their tech support people seem to be just random people plucked from the street and stuck into their office.
Anyone looking for a good registrar who *answers* the emails, and cares about keeping you happy? Try us. We do domain registration *and* web hosting.:D
On an average day, I can get much higher throughput than even the T1 we have wired at work. I have a saved page from a speed test I did a while ago, where it showed my outgoing and incoming to be much higher than a typical T1 line.
Couple that with the digital cable package that comes with it, I get 200 channels of high-quality (the picture/sound, not the programming -- stupid FOX) television, and fast-as-a-mofo internet for $100 CAD (that's like $25 USD, right?) per month. Not bad:)
I've had those voices, too.. the voices I heard belonged to a HAM/CB (not sure which one, he's got a big friggin antenna on his house, though) hobbyist who lives in my neighbourhood. Just to drown him out, we had to go out and get all stainless steel cables and wiring for all our audio equipment, and 900mhz phones to replace all the ones in our house.
It was horrible. He could talk through the TV, and not only would it override the volume on the TV, it would also give the screen static.
There's a couple ways to do it.. one way is to set a cookie, then check to see if it's set.. if not, cookies are blocked.. the other way is to watch for a request for the banner image. If it's being blocked, then the browser's request for the image will never reach the server.
I can see websites instituting this software losing a lot of business.
It's true. I'm a Canadian, and everyone I know uses debit almost all the time, unless cash is readily available. Like Rakerman mentioned, only small stores don't accept debit.. I'd also like to mention that some form of cash machine is usually within reasonable walking distance from these small stores. So, if they don't take debit, you just have to step outside, grab a $20, and pay for your goods.
Personally, it all depends on convenience.. for example, if I go to a restaurant and the bill comes out to $16.54.. if I have a $20 on hand, I'll just drop it and leave. Or if I go to 7-11 I might grab a couple $20's for the road, but pay for my Slurpee with debit.
News papers have been doing this for years.
Although, at least the news papers have the decency to print the add in a different font, or put "Advertising Special Feature" on the page somewhere.

I've found this one to be more than sufficient. Runs on Java.

Google rocks. I hope they can keep on going like they are.. saviors of what little we have left of the internet.
Every season, every episode.
First season conveniently on DVD, all the rest on various VHS tapes.

It's all well and good that they're getting Ximian to work in other places, but how about adding some support for Mandrake 8.1?
LOL. Try it.
The last time Americans tried to Annex Canada we not only turned you back, but pushed you back south of your beloved White House, then burned it down.

That is an ingenious quote.
You're right.. I do hate Microsoft.

This is how some recent worms were spread around.
Boy am I glad I use mozilla for web and email.

I agree with that OpenSRS statement. I forgot to mention that SearchBC.com is an OpenSRS reseller.

Anyways, NSI = BAD BAD BAD.
I have no problems with ratings. They give parents a guide as to what might/might not be appropriate for their children.
What I'm 100% against is not selling games because of their content. It should be up to the buyer what is "too much".

There's a few things that made me wonder about this, such as:
Why are large corporations and networks so pathetically predictable (much like a FOX sitcom)?
and
Why didn't they do this sooner? Not that I wanted them to, but I expected them to a *long* time go.

Friggin guy.
LOL.
Tell your friend to buy a better phone.

Doesn't work, huh?

How long before we start seeing Titanium case mods?
