Actually, I agree 100%. Tried to set up a modem game in MOO2 a couple of years ago, but that's NOOO good. Takes forever just to set up, then the game doesn't progress until everyone finishes their turn. When in single player, many turns are just "end turn" repeatedly to get a new tech, or to arrive at a new place. In multiplayer, that's just no good. You just want to click through a couple turns at the start, but some guy's busy micromanaging his indivdual peons.
It is so horrible, and if you tend to play the long-game (research, rinse, repeat) then you're screwed.
I think part of the problem is that before coming out with a commercial product, they have to make sure the device will work in real world situations, not just in a vacuum chamber mounted on shocks, etc. HDs deliever probably almost perfect data accuracy (and I had a bad drive for a while, if you lose even a small amount of data to corruption, all hell breaks loose), so until these devices work 999999/1000000 times, we won't be seeing 'em.
Except that historically, the philosophers are the first to go when free speech is called into question. Hell, the basis (not necessarily the origin, but the basis) of Western philosophy is based on Socrates, who died because he spoke freely.
Granted, it was a joke.. but still.. the thinkers will be the first to go..
Now Universites are a different story, and Academic freedom is usualy rather wide.
This is what bothers me. Instead of being usually, it should be _always_. IMHO, the university is a place for people to freely exchange ideas, without fear of incrimintion. Naturally, you would want some way of prohibiting baseless banal statments. The way I see it, so long as an argument is presented with suitable factual evidence, or solid logic, there should be no reason except in _extreme_ cases where topics should be avoided.
A sensitive prof/student would try to avoid hurting people, but they shouldn't fear making a point just because someone might not agree with them.
That, I suppose, is my main point of contention. People who try to punish others who have opinions that differ from their own. These are the people that are tearing down free speech from the inside.
It seems to me that it is kind of worrying how it's even necessary that such zones are required. According to the Constition, isn't the entire US a free speech zone?
In any case, I've looked into issues about free speech on campus' in the past, and it's scary. Profs being suspended because people find discussing the history of slavery offensive, and other similar things. I can't remember many of the specifics, but it seems only a small number of profs have been standing up to the trend to prevent the open discussion of ideas.
If I can dig up any of the references, I'll post them.
Missed last years, but two years ago had a lot of fun at the contest. I think it's more fun when there's more interaction with the other robots, unlike this year's, although I must admit it's actually a pretty cool idea. I remember in the curling tho, placing blocking stones and such.. it was fun.
Good luck to you guys out in Calgary, hopefully see you at the competition....... (give Unionville a cheer when we're up)
I believe this is the eighth year of CanadaFIRST, maybe the ninth. Our school had similar fund raising problems, however the oganizer of the event helped connect us with Celestica, and another member of our team managed to connect us with several smaller companies, with the net result that we scrapped together enough money for the enterence fee about four days before it was due....
Well, everyone keeps making the point that the teacher had no authority to do so, but no one has provided any evidence that this is the case.
At my highschool, most (maybe all) of the CS teachers have full access and rights over the network. I have an active role in an extracurricular activity at the school, and I needed accounts on the network for AutoCAD. I asked one of the CS teachers (neither department head nor network admin), and he logged on as the administrator and proceeded to create my accounts. There was another case where the school was testing out a new protection scheme, and told people that they were free to fuck around with the computer that was running the test, in order to see if it was worth purchasing (and for our fun:).
At my school it's been the case that the teachers DO have the authority to make such a request. Granted, I don't think they could offer the money, but they could offer the permission.
I'm one of the aformentioned 95% that had no idea about a the core-dump size-limit, and although you've mentioned what it is, I'm still left wondering exactly what the actual size limit is, how to work around it, and whatever else you could tell me (us?) about this limit.
Sorry to *ghasp* not know something, but it happens some times:)
The real question is if this is even a case of fair use. They should just do a 'clean room' implementation of all the skins and models and sounds and weapons, and no one could say a thing.:)
I believe however, that the point is not to interest the average, or even avid computer user. The processor is being aimed specifically at high-end jobs. The article mentions that their main competition will be from Sun... not many people have personal Sun workstations at their disposal.
As far as I can tell, it seems to me that it appears that a wave is travelling faster than c, where this is not the case. In reality, each wave is travelling at something less than c, and when they happen be in phase the sum of the waves has a pulse which propogates faster than light.
Of course, I'm in the process of high school physics right now, so I'm not an expert.
The main thing about the whole Mitnick story though, and the part that most people seem to not understand, is not what he did, but what was done to him.
I did some reading on it, and by holding him as they did, the US government actually violeted the UN Charter of Human Rights. If any other country did this, the US would be bombing them, so why are we exempting the US?
The whole case against him was BS bully tactics, and blatent violations of the US Constitution.
If you can't see past the buzz into the real issue, then what are you doing on/.?
You're totally wrong hear. In testing, it has been proven that CD audio sounds distinguisably better than an mp3 of the same track. I don't know a web site to back it, but if you live in Ontario, pick up this week's Fast Forward section.
I don't know who taught you politics, but you're talking crazy.

I disagree.. I'm not a Q3A expert, and my machine probably wont go over 30fps in Q3A, but when you're playing against people who camp on platforms, sometimes the only way to take out the other player is to shoot through the platform..

ehehe wow, should've thought of this earlier, but how long do you figure it would be to drive from toronto to st. john's?
that would be one cool trip...
I'm hoping we can grab that one that's a model of the Avro Arrow. That's the coolest looking award I've ever seen.
:)
Sounds like the teams from Newfoundland did a bang up job last year.. congratz
Long-ass kickoff video too, eh?

not at all.. looking for an open FTP port is more like walking up to a book store and trying to open the door to see if it's open.

Isn't this what Microsoft is trying to do with OLE? Or are they just doing that so you never actually leave one of their applications?
Well if the internet has been patented, Al Gore must be making a killing...

In Canada, the feds tend to be liberals, and we don't have a DMCA, or a UCITA.. go figure, eh?
