    One more word: Nope

Amazon MP3, Facebook, Twitter, and a number of Google branded apps are all preinstalled by Google on my Nexus One and are not removable. Each Android upgrade has brought more of these. Sure, it's not as bad as a carrier branded phone but Google is not exactly innocent either.

Yeah, but you need to factor in identity theft into the price as well.

Only if you're planning to give them your credit card information or to use a password on PSN that you use elsewhere. Neither of which is required nor recommended (IMHO). If you don't give them anything sensitive, then they have nothing that can be compromised.

You do realize you can get PSN without giving them your credit card info since it is free, right? Heck, even if you want to buy something you don't have to give them your CC info, just need to buy PSN cards at the store.

Not only that, you can buy PSN cards online from Amazon.com and download the codes immediately. So you don't even have to go to the store. (At least in the US. YMMV.)

I believe that will require a power cord upgrade. Unplug the power cord, keep that and throw away the rest of the computer.

Perhaps. But at least they'll have to explicitly state that they're collecting the data and also tell you how they're sharing it. They'll also have to give you a way to delete your data. It's a big step in the right direction.

I tried watching that presentation live online. After a few minutes of "Loading..." every few seconds I gave up. People trying to watch via Playstation Home were reporting that they were not even able to log in because the system was so overloaded. Sony doesn't really need any help from outside groups to screw things up. They're quite capable on their own.

    There's a third option:

    C) Scrub your account of sensitive personal information and use Playstation cards purchsed from retailers to pay for anything new.

This is my choice. PSN itself is free so the hassle should be minimal.

Just because they have most of the search market doesn't mean they're being anticompetitive. They're just the best at what they do, for now. As soon as some other company invents the next great search engine, there's nothing Google will be able to do to keep people from defecting if they so choose. Contrast that with Windows where moving away to something else can be difficult or impossible depending on the software needs of the end user.

Besides, I thought Google's main focus was advertising, and search was just a delivery vehicle, just like Android, Docs, and everything else they give away for free.

  16. Re:Why Amazon Prime? on Watch Out Netflix, Amazon Streaming Video to Prime Users · · Score: 1
Exactly. For now it's a loss leader. Combined with the free second day delivery, it will drive some people to Prime and therefore to buy more from Amazon. And for those of us that are already Prime customers, we'll give their VOD service more attention. I've owned a Roku player for over two years but never paid the Amazon VOD channel any mind. Last night, because of this announcement, I linked it to my Amazon account and gave it a try.

In the future if it takes off Amazon may try to create a separate Netflix-alike flat rate streaming service. But I'm guessing they will keep the free service, even if it's small, to draw attention to Prime and VOD.

You're correct about the haphazard (lack of) organization. If you know the title you're looking for then you're golden. Otherwise good luck.

Also, as far as I can tell you can't add any of the free movies to your personal library like you can with rented or purchased titles. This makes it impossible to search for movies on the web and then watch them on a set-top box like the Roku player. And searching with the remote on the Roku player is awkward at best.

But hey, as a Prime customer already, this is all gravy to me. I think the main benefit will be to give Netflix some heat so they keep improving their service.

It does work in Linux. I clicked on the play button for one of the free movies yesterday expecting to get a "Go away, we don't speak Linux" response. Instead, a flash based player popped up.

(INB4 "flash is the devil". Perhaps, but that's another issue.)
