i started looking for work through the la times online, monster, dice, hot jobs, smaller area based head hunter sites and what not around the end of 02 beginning of 03. my girlfriend at the time would search the posting on the jobtrak site at ucla (or let me use her id too) as well. i dont know the exact number of responses i got from "internet job boards" (ie. monster and the like), but i can tell you i definitely got less than 5 responses. the la times and local newspaper sites seemed to have the best return. i got a probably 16 interviews through newspaper ads. i got such a better response from then i started checking monster once weekly and only taking the most promising listings instead of everything i was qualified for. i found a lot local papers i didnt know existed, and i generally got some response from the ads i found in them.
i also realized that networking, while great, didnt help at all. i have friends in every level of seemingly every industry and not one could help me find any employment. then i happened upon craigslist.org. for the la area, it works great for so many things. i found the most sincere listings, the most interesting jobs, the best responses. i probably got 8 or 9 interviews from craigslist.
i realized that most everything posted on monster and some of the newspaper ads were coming from an employment agency, so i started applying to them. even to the same company is different cities that i would be willing to commute to. in the end, i got one response from the 11 employment agencies i joined. irony is, after i found employment, they suddenly had some meaningless one day receptionist position theyd want me to fill. pretty retarded.
basically, i feel that monster and the like are just ways for employment agencies to post listing to get responses and resumes. they get paid for signing people up as well as fidning them jobs and it shows. i find monster and them all to be useless. newspapers, while cumbersome seem to work the best. oh, another funny thing, the first job i landed, from a newspaper response, they wouldnt hire me until i passed a probationary period, so they said i had to get paid through a temp agency. haha, i went into the local one that i applied with first, and they got to keep 1/3 of my hourly pay. is that great or what. i joined them, they didnt do shit, i found a job, they got 1/3 of my money. gotta love their scam. i got fired a few days before my probationw as over and the next job i got was trhough craigslist i believe. im not certain, but it was either craigslist or a newspaper.
i think newspapers and craigslist are the best options, the other online boards are just temp agencies farming resumes.
I just read through all these replies and its completely obvious no one has read the article. Even at k5 a bunch of dumbasses just starting ranting about their rights, author included. the blurbs are sensationalist and try to make it sound as if were in a police state. this took place in 2000 and the guy had it coming. he was reported to the cops, at which point the cops approached him. i could completely understan id he had been walking his dog and the cop came up and tackled him or arrested him becuase he was in "the same place at the same time", but this is none of those. an intoxicated dumbass mouthed off to a cop because he was pissed and the cop finally had enough. under these circumstances the guy is lucky he got off with a 250 dollar fine. 4 years later, the supreme court is going to use this as an excuse to say cops can demand id when they approach with the suspicion or report that you committed a crime.
had he been sitting on his porch minding his own business, id be outraged. ive been approached by cops and detained, cuffed, becuase i was walking at night. they give you some bullshit excuse, and becuase of that excuse, they are allowed to stop you. its not right, but the police are going to be believed over some random person. maybe we should be more outraged that cops can get by with making up excuses and "bending" police reports. just becuase you get arrested for something doesnt mean that the cop had probable cause or any justification to approach you in the first place.
All that the record industry had on the alleged thief was an eight-digit Internet protocol address, 141.158.104.94.
kinda makes sense when you consider the way the RIAA counts. they say they made 30 million last year when all reports show it was more like 35 million. i made the numbers up but we all remember reading those articles here about the RIAA studies and the third party studies that showed huge margins. just seems to be the way they do things, count and then lop off a couple numbers to make it sound better.
I am using IE 6 and i heard about this hole here on/., so after i saw the post about the fix being available, i went to downloading. First off, im rather used to the process of downloading M$ fixes and updates, but this time, i had a helluva time finding it. So i get to it and i download the patch for IE6. after i sit and wait, i double click to install, and "you must have Internet Explorer installed to use this". WTF??!! i'm using win2k and IE "6.0.2479.0006". anyone else had this problem. needless to say, its pissing me off, cause im sure ill have to go download a new version of IE6, "between 7 and 70 megs, averaging 25 megs for most users" and then, instll, restart, log-in, install, restart, log-in, connect to the internet. this does nto please me.
Check out digital blasphemy. It has some really nice pictures made with various 3-d animation/rendering programs. I do believe there are some movies on there too. Very nice quality work.

This is one of the reasons I feel America needs to chill out a bit and why we need to pass some laws against these types of riders. I personally plan on doing something to try and get the word out about this bill. After I post this little post im heading over to some LA news station websites to find the info to let them in on this article and see if maybe I can get this article out in the open. I kno i prolly cant do much but I think this is rather lame... a clause on illegal information on websites? I mean c'mon. This type of censorship is blatantly against our Bill of Rights and the simple thought of this clause being inserted into the "Bankruptcy Reform Act of 2000" is just annoying me to no end.
WTF???!!! ok, so ive been reading these responses and what ive noticed most is that these services (ftp and telnet) r very beneficial and much needed. wehn i was at school last year and i decided i wanted to learn how to ftp serve, and how to do it well, there was only one logical choice. set up my computer to ftp serve. so i did and now i understand the process much better. and as far as telnet goes -- damn, if theres anything i ever wanted more.
in my infinite wisdom i set up my school email account on netscape communicator and then proceeded to give ppl my school email. well needless to say i had a load of email i had to check on that account. when im kickin it in a friends room across campus or im off-campus and i want to go through and toss the mail what other way is there to take care of it quickly. just telnet in and check it without the need to trek across campus or just wait a couple days until im back at school. and what a remote log-in for us linux users. if my friend just got a cool program theres no reason for me to go back to my room to download it. just log-in through telnet and, thanks to the bandwidth, transfer the file.
i can see where ftp would become a problem. ive seen some ftp crazy kids, but telnet!! give me a break. and for all those none tech savvy students, well they should take a minute to ask someone more knowledgeable a question or two. u hav more to worry about from some script kiddie across the nation than a mad-hacker next door. what they dont know doesnt hurt them and not many people are malicious to the point of no repair to someones computer. its all fun and games, nothing that cant be fixed.
can schools please stop being so paranoid. its just becoming an annoyance at this point.
to be correct, a month is 4.3 weeks.
technically, more like 4.357
that might help in future calculations.
