This is really a social-animal thing. It probably relates to hardwired brain circutry. For an example of what I am talking about, go to www.archive.org and search the moving images archive for "rats" + "dominance".
You will see a link to an old scientific film from some rat experiment. You can download it or stream it. Watch that film and see the human race recapitulated....
(archive.org appears to be down right now, tho....).
Gates mainly got rich because his family connections got him his first big contract. His family was Old Money, and his mom used her connections to get him in with IBM. And his family's old money got him educated at one of the best private schools in the country. And he has genetics on his side. Genetics and family connections aint gonna brush off from reading his latest self-indulgent musings.
Yeah, well, thanks for giving me the latest scoop on what some plutocrat college dropout thinks about how the brain works. Tell ya what, if I ever need some solid info on "information overload", I think I will consult someone who actually knows something about it, like maybe a neuroscientist, or something.
Who gives a fuck what Bill Gates thinks about every little thing?
And what I am suggesting is DEMOCRACY at work. Ain't it a bitch?
Basically, you don't like what is going on,
You are correct, sir! therefore, you should start your company, get support from others who share your goals, and then setup some sort of group call the anit-BSA (or whatever).
No, what I am going to do is start a movement to CORRECT our political culture. It has happened many times in the past. Heads rolled. Leaders got their attitudes adjusted. And things improved. We need to teach our leaders a lesson and adjust their attitudes. If you agree, then join me. If not, then get the fuck outta the way....
"Don't ever touch me, or I'll KILL YOU!"/grin...great movie!
If you were as vocal about protecting the rights of content producers as you are about protecting the rights of "the people", maybe there would be more balance in the situation.
Yeah, there ya go! And if the antelope greased himself with lard before being eaten by the lion, it would really help the lion swallow that darn antelope. THe antelope should really be more considerate....
Treason? Are you honestly that fucking stupid? Do you even know what treason IS?
Treason is defined in the Constitution as aiding or abetting an enemy of the USA. "Enemy" can be interpreted in more than one way. I see the big corporations as our greatest enemy. You put ME on the Supreme Court bench, indict these sellout politicians for treason, and I will vote to fry these politicians who sell out our country to the corporations.....
Yeah, but note whom would have to try them for treason... uhm, isn't that the politicians themselves?
Yeah, whatever. But every task needs to start somewhere: an acknowledgement of the problem, a statement of a solution to solve the problem, etc.
WE NEED TO HANG (or fry) SOME POLITICIANS. That should be really obvious by now. So, if we need to do that, we need to SAY SO, first. I am saying so.
If you agree, then say so. We can go from there. But first we need to acknowledge the problem, and state our goals to reach a solution for that problem.
These BSA dictators are paying off politicians to create corporate feudalism. Just like it was in the Middle Ages where private power, those with the most gold, OWNED the humans beings within a certain geographical area, so too has the BSA BOUGHT a part of us. For those BSA funders, and politicians who have enabled this, this is treason, IMHO.
All the CEOs who fund the BSA should be tried for treason, and if convicted, placed in the electric chair, and electrocuted to death. And do the same for their lapdog politicians who give them this power.
Hang 'em high! For treason, and crimes against the people. THey sold out our jobs to the business lobbies on h1b, L1 visas and outsourcing, they extort us for outrageous medical care costs, and we do nothing. We should indict these bastard politicians for treason, convict them, and hang them....
What do you wanna bet that the ITAA or some similar coalition of IT industry companies bought this little bit of propaganda, simply to help manufacture consent for raising the cap on h1b visas and retaining L1 visas?

No one seems to care that the traitorous, neoliberal politicians sold our geek jobs out to H1Bs and to outsourced 3rd world labor. I say indict, try, and convict for treason (in a court of law) all the politicians who sold us out, along with the CEOs who did the same, and then sentence them to death and execute them in the electric chair, as all traitors should be executed, by rule of law, and then we can get America back on track.
now all those third rate retards from fourth rate "art" schools will flood the place looking to find a way to be shackled to a desk in some giant veal fattening pen so they can see their name fly by on the Big Screen at 30 miles per hour for crappy wages only to be replaced by a fourth rate retard from a fifth rate art school in Bangalore who gets to watch his name fly by at 60 miles per hour on the Big Screen all in order to model some great steaming tourde oozing from some Future Villian's Butthole, exquisitely rendered by some multi-googlebyte monstrosity lurking in the Presidio.
No friends, this is not a great step forward - it's just another corporation cashing in where it can so it can manufacture more circuses for the clueless proles.
Ha ha! That is a lovely sentiment. Sounds like you speak from experience.....
I am not quite sure what your project is! You might want to get some explanatory metatext up front, dealing with the general concept of what it is you are trying to do. I assume you are creating some sort of audiovisual entertainment of the Sci Fi genre. But what is your planned medium of distribution? Video to be downloaded? And how are you creating the script? Doing the editing? Collaboratively, I assume, since that is what the subject of this subthread is....
THen say so! Right up front! You can get more participants that way. Right now, what you are doing is somewhat obscure to the casual websurfer, which is NOT what you want.
I am working on a solo video documentary right now that I plan to release under Creative Commons license. When I finish I hope it will encourge other people to collaborate over the Net to write scripts, find public domain & creative commons video footage & images, create flash animations, and edit them all together in copylefted, Creative commons entertainment and educational videos, free to download, anywhere, anytime. Such a copylefted production, if done well, could be traded over p2p networks for decades to come.
Hopefully, people will do this for the same reason that they make free software--for the resume enhancement, for the personal satisfaction, for the education.
One reason why public access TV is so bad is because so few people work on each project. THe reason why Hollywood is so much better than public access is because so many more people work on a Hollywood movie than on the public access stuff you see.
COLLABORATION is the future of video entertainment and news. And when broadband is more widespread in America, the market for such creative commons collaborations will be much greater.

I have not investigated freenet all that much. However, from what I can tell, Freenet is massively overhyped, probably as a result of some pre-tech bust dotcom PR-hype that was being used to sell its inventor, Ian Clarke, as a SuperGenius UberGeek, the better to raise some venture capital from some sort of dotcom venture built around Ian Clarke.
