I agree. I imagine someone in fb marketing asked a programmer "how many accounts do we have?". The programmer, taking that literally, probably did something like SELECT COUNT(*) FROM users in the database and said "we have 500 million."
It would be interesting to see how many users have logged on in the last six months.
I'm not entirely sure facebook can be considered a stand-alone piece of technology. I mean sure its impressive and pretty and has half a billion users, but its just PHP, javascript, HTML. It's a webpage. Sure, its built on some cool technology and it is a pretty impressive use of that technology, but its not really technology itself.
I dunno about that, man. I have only one facebook account, but something on the order of 5-6 email accounts (yes I check all these things regularly too)
Ok I haven't read through all the comments here so someone may have already said this.
JavaScript is client-side. That means it has to be downloaded by your browser, so the code has to be world-readable. It's not very difficult to just go download a copy of the JS code yourself. And some browsers (chrome native and firefox via firebug) allow you to view the javascript on any page without even having to separately download it yourself. This is basically like saying "we want all your HTML code to be available for anyone to see!"
It already is "open source", you just have to look for it a bit.
I read in an article a while back that when you know a shooter is around, silence your cell phone if you're hiding, since the shooter will hear a ring and know you are around (and probably shoot you). And so these guys sent out emails? If you're in a school checking your email then you're probably in a class. Which means you're checking it on your smartphone. My phone beeps when I get an email. Irony?
Though I suppose you could be in a computer lab checking your email. But seriously, if a shooting is happening on campus I don't want an email. I want the cops.
When I first heard about that I called Verizon and asked when it would be available in my area. Their answer: "Eventually..."
Though granted that was two years ago.
I imagine if anyone in the accounts terminating department in facebook ever reads this, they probably will. With the vast diversity of names throughout the world it's probably pretty difficult to decide which are fake.
Two people I know created facebook pages for their dogs. And someone with below average intelligence CAN operate a computer to the point of using facebook.
Why would you friend your boss on fb? I don't think I would work for a company that required that. Unless my boss was super cool and someone who I actually considered to be my friend.
Is there a part of "your name" you didn't understand?
If someone takes a ton of money out on a loan in your name, chances are they don't really intend to repay it (unless they're a VERY kind identity thief). The bank then gives your name to a collections agency and the agency finds you.
Oh this also tends to ruin your credit score, for those who care about such things.
How often are you assuming the connection is in use? I pull a lot more than 7 Kbps, but I've never gone over 150 GB/month. If you're assuming someone constantly using their connection 24/7, then yes, but the only people who do that are torrenters (and in reality the cap is meant to stop them from destroying the network) and someone hosting a server (which specifically isn't allowed on a consumer DSL line).
I don't have a problem with a cap as long as that's it. A solid cap. I have a Comcast connection for a house full of college-age people. Comcast not only caps us, they throttle our bandwidth if we start using over 10 MB/s. That I have a problem with. If you're gonna cap me, then cap me and let me run through it, THEN throttle me. Not before.
And don't sell bandwidth that you don't have (which has already been said quite a few times here)

"Hopefully this was all obvious to you and you were simply being facetious. I'd rather the world was populated with assholes than idiots."
I hate to be the one to say this, but it happens to be populated with people who are both.
pre-prepare is when you prepare to prepare. It's like meta-preparation.
I think you may have just discovered the real reason behind this bill.
If you're using a smartphone it should still go off at the right time even if there's no service.
That's not an entirely bad idea.
But I imagine that would have fairly serious impacts on a lot of p2p online games.
I am pretty sure that was meant as scarcasm. You fail for not reading the rest of the line.
Because wikipedia is COMPLETELY accurate on those things. Right?
You didn't create that... Copyright violation!

I think parent MIGHT be referring to pride being one of the seven deadly sins. But I can't be sure.

Do you really think senate members have un-monitored facebook profiles?
Considering the technical sophistication of those in power, I'd be amazed if many of them even have profiles at all.

Slashdot is edited?
Welcome to slashdot :D

Where can you get 18 Mbit/s for $60?? I'm getting 16 Mbit/s and paying $73 for it.
