Unfortunately line-item veto was found unconstitutional. Presidents of both parties lobbied for it, and finally the Republicans passed it in 1995's "Contract with America," but the Supreme Court ruled that it violated the separation of powers. So this issue is dead unless someone makes a constitutional amendment happen, which is very unlikely at this point.

the so-called "Amber Alert" bill, which was initially intended to provide a national alert system for missing children (ooh, tug at those heartstrings!) yet is larded up with all sorts of crapola that would never have passed otherwise, including mandatory minimum sentencing, expanded wiretaps, and Joe Biden's "RAVE Act" that would make it a felony to hold dances with electronic music if someone gets high there. Ri-fucking-diculous. (Good discussion over at plastic.)

If genetic modification becomes pervasive, humanity will be unable to resist converging on an idealised notion of the "perfect" human being.

But people prefer diversity. The perception of a "perfect" human being differs so widely by culture and nation and ethnicity that we'll never have a monoculture.

  10. Hollywood Execs are a bunch of Trolls on Wired on Hollywood's Elite Message Boards · · Score: 4, Interesting
Clearly these execs are just overgrown kids with too much time on their hands wanting to mess with each other. In normal parlance, they're Trolls.

As everyone knows, a certain well-known site has a similar problem. Yet with the magic of Zoo, trolls can be banished with just a few mouse clicks! And as we all know, now slashdot is perfectly free of such ill-behaved creatures.

So the obvious answer is for Hollywood to use slash! Blacklist the Trolls, and we'll get better movies.

No, you can thank the undemocratic Electoral College system that severely favors small states for the current situation. The Florida mess notwithstanding (though I'm a Democrat I think Bush won Florida), any system that gives the win to the candidate who loses the popular vote needs to be reformed.

I mean, come on, California has as many senators as South Dakota. No disrespect meant for South Dakota, but 34 million people ought to get more senators than 750K. Since electoral votes are allocated by Representatives + Senators, there is something severely wrong here.
