what would be the best choice of card I could get for a box that doesn't have an AGP slot? I got a dual P3-800 from a former employer; the motherboard (Asus CUR-DLS) has a server chipset without an AGP slot. Anyone know of a PCI version of the GeForce 3?
Kirsten Sterrett, recently a University of Colorado graduate student, first became interested in how beer would brew in space while working at the Coors Brewing Company.
Considering she worked for Coors, maybe she should first become interested in how beer is brewed on Earth.
If you're interested in beer on Earth, check out the Fremont Oktoberfest this weekend in Seattle!
I can't believe they forgot the MindGuard Public License! More software ought to use this license. Excerpt:
A "work based on the Program" hereinafter means either the Program
itself or a work containing a portion or the totality of the
Program either with or without modifications, translations,
transliterations, or transformations. (Hereinafter, the term
"modification" shall include, without limitations, the last four
terms of the previous sentence excluding the term "or" unless "or"
is used to refer to a boolean function applied to modify the
Program or any part of it.) Each licensee is addressed as "you",
as in the statement "You are a licensee". (The statement "You are
not a licensee" will hereinafter have no logical meaning.)
Where can I find a linux driver for the jogdial? I'd love to get that thing working.
I got an Sony vaio XG-29 recently, it's a good machine. Sounds the same as what you described: P3-750, 128MB memory, 18gb hard drive...good weight & sleek build.
While I agree that the perl OO could use some changes, I'm not sure why we're seeing some major changes to the language syntax. Maybe I'm just missing something, but some of these syntax changes don't seem to be extending the language. Sure, they might make a particular operation easier to write, but what operation in perl takes more than a line or two anyway?
I remember doing characterization on standard cells a couple years ago. Really interesting job, I'd find the propagation times and edge rates of inverters, nand gates, flip flops etc etc... All this was done in software using circuit simulation tools.
Anyway, right before I left I remember characterizing 0.18 micron stuff. The inverters had edge rates on the order of 50 picoseconds (50 x 10^-12!!). That's how long a logic transition (0 -> 1 or vice versa) takes. Propagation times took a little longer, but not much.
Of course, this all was back in early '97. This stuff just gets faster and faster. Btw- if someone needs a characterization engineer in the Seattle area let me know. It was pretty cool to be on the cutting edge of this stuff.
I don't run SETI@home (gasp!), but does the difference between having 128MB of main memory vs 256MB matter that much? I mean, the machine should be otherwise idle and unless the machine starts swapping it isn't going to make much of a difference how much memory you have.
In fact, the statistics show that SETI isn't that memory hungry, the differences between the two memory configurations where almost noise; less than a standard deviation in some cases.
A database really ought to use fdatasync, not fsync if fdatasync is implemented. fdatasync won't update the file access times, thus requiring only a single write operation instead of two.
Of course, since all "benchmark"/tests used fsync it kinda washes out since the same operation is common among all.
I don't understand why MS is taking such a vocal stance. Hypothetically, couldn't MS implement all their server-side stuff using GPL'd and/or BSD licensed software and *not* have to redistribute it? As long as the software is never distributed, MS could stand to capitolize on it without ever having to reveal a single line of source.
China is demanding an apology from Microsoft for this attack on their IIS web servers.

Can you use a one time pad to transmit the code
book for your next one time pad? If the receiver & I agree (securely) on an initial one time pad (call it pad #1), then within my first message to the receiver I also encrypt a new one time pad (pad #2) for the reply. The receiver then uses pad #1 to decrypt the message, pad #2 to encrypt a reply, and also includes a pad #3 for my reply.
I realize this would be difficult from an implementation stand point, but I was just wondering if transmission of a new pad is secure within a one time pad.
The best part of that benchmark was that is was later revealed on one of the Postgres mailing lists that the two "unknown" databases in the benchmark were Proprietary 8.1.5 and the other one "preferred to run on Windows"....
After their hit "Survivor", CBS's follow up show "Big Brother", in an effort to gather ratings, will be moving the show to Mars where they'll create the first Mars colony. No word yet on whether you get a space suit when you get kicked out of the house...
Does HP have some sort of "update" facility for getting newer firmware in the printer? If so, how would they accomplish this? It would be interesting to portscan the printer & see what it's listening for. If someone did have a firmware update and you could reverse engineer how they're accomplishing it, would it be possible to open a shell on the device?
Then add some more services...my printer is also my web server & houses my database too...
heh, why do you think I've still got my TT030? This was Atari fastest production machine, a whopping 68030 @ 32MHz. Cubase timing is damn tight on this box, except the friggin program freezes up in the arrangement window sometimes.
Also, Atari released a version of System V for the TT030. I don't know anything about it, except that is supposedly exists in some back closet somewhere. I've got an old version of NetBSD on mine. Rock solid.
I can't find any trademark info at the USPTO for _Rise of the Empire_. I did a keyword search for "Rise" AND "Empire".
Lucas does (of course) have trademarks for everything else. Phantom Menace, Star Wars, etc etc. I did a search for trademarks owned by "Lucasfilm" or "Lucas Licensing" & didn't see much of interest.
Anyone know what "The Seventh Tower" is? That's one of the trademarks I didn't recognize. Also, how long before the movie comes out do you think they'll have to get a trademark?
