I'd just like to point out that I run my MythTV server on a PIII-750 with 128mb RAM, it was free to me because it was donated from a friend who didn't use it anymore. I'd ba amazed if anyone couldn't find a similar PC for free, but even if you have to pay I agree $1000 is way out of line with reality.
It totally changed the way I used my computer! I used to use it quite comfortably, and everything worked, and I was somewhat pleased.
Things are vastly different on Vista! It's changed the way I use my computer. It no longer works, so I no longer use it. I had to borrow a friend's "leenux" just to type this!
I'm a developer, and I like it more than the GPL2. It seeks to do the same things, but it does them better. If I had a philosophical problem with the GPL I'd use a BSD license instead. I think it's vital that both types of license are out there.
It's true; no one should be shocked by this. But that doesn't mean it's OK, or even acceptable.
Being a patriot means wanting your government to do BETTER than those other guys. That they all do it isn't an excuse for someone who loves his country. Bush doesn't.
Surely you're knowledgable enough to see that the drivers and third-party software aren't Microsoft's responsibility? It's another reason Microsoft sucks. When my linux kernel is updated, all the drivers that are out there get updated too. When Microsoft makes big changes they have to go to a milion third parties and beg and wheedle them to update their technology.
I think you missed my point. I'm suggesting that the more you train an idiot user to use the package manager and never install third-party packages, the more you have trained them off bad behaviour that's likely to someday lead to a compromise of their system.
It's not that third-party packages CAN'T be installed; I never said any such thing. I said there is seldom any NEED to go there and that's a Good Thing.
I have an Nvidia 6800, a dual-core AMD (the slowest you can buy, 2Ghz) and it ran flawlessly for me... although I did have to turn down a couple of graphics settings, it was still quite pretty. I did use a no-cd crack on it; I can't stand that copyprotection crap. So maybe that had an effect? I can honestly say I was quite impressed with the game's stability, actually... most games I've played will crash at some point, but after finishing STALKER I had not experienced a single game crash.
Unfortunately, as fun as STALKER is, it's not nearly an RPG; it's far less of an RPG than, say, Deus Ex. You can't level up stats, you can only talk to people superficially, and whether you hit something or not is not based on your character's skill as much as it is based on your own skill. You can't play a different type of character than your friend did, there's only one guy in the game and he never changes.
Don't get me wrong; I quite enjoyed it. But it is much, much closer to an FPS than an RPG.
Deus Ex was a great game. It's old. Deus Ex II was passable. Neither is a RPG, though they have some RPGish stylings. System Shock was a terrible game. I know people loved it, but randomly spawning infinite enemies instantly ruins a game for me. You can't fit 100 people in that room, how come 100 people came out of it? Or, I just cleared that entire zone... how could anyone else get in there? Even if it were good (which it isn't), it too is too old. I want something modern! Mass Effect looks like it will probably suffer from the same "smallness" that other Bioware games have -- they are all constrained to tiny "areas" and you move from one to the other,... they are more like japanese CRPGs, not enough freedom. That said I am looking forward to Mass Effect; it fails primarily because it's not here yet.
That's two that fail because they aren't reasonably "modern" and one that fails because it doesn't exist yet. I am fairly confident in my claim that there isn't a single such game on the market today, but if someone would please prove me wrong I will purchase the game immediately and offer my eternal thanks.
For the record if there's a modern game like Deus Ex I'd take it. I've lowered my standardards so much already I've played through Deus Ex II a few times.:(
Hey, speaking of Deus Ex, it runs GREAT under Wine, so does Steam, and Deux Ex is available via Steam. So If you want to play Deus Ex, you can get a Steam Account, buy Deus Ex and play it all on Linux, easy as pie. Easier than pie. But I digress...
Deus Ex II I can't get to run past the title screen on linux.:(
Well, I'm not a hater... Fedora's package management was atrocious the last time I tried it, abotu seven years ago. To say it is now wouldn't be fair of me.
What I love about Debian and therefore Ubuntu is... if it's not in the package manager, I probably shouldn't be running it. Redhat encourages people to download packages from third-parties(*)... which is going to be a real problem if it ever becomes widely adpoted.
(* because so few things are available as part of a distro. Last time I checked the difference was something like 16,000 packages in Debian and 1000 in Redhat?)
If our hearts are in the correct state, as developed through a life's worth of experiences, then he will let that person into heaven.
That's a real sweet thought with exactly zero Biblical support.
What it actually says is, none shall come to the father but through me:
Whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. -- John 3:16
He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life -- John 3:36
Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved. -- Acts 16:31
Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. -- John 3:3
He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life. -- John 5:24
Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. -- John 3:5
Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost. -- Titus 3:5
Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. -- Matthew 18:3
He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved. -- Mark 16:16
If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. -- Romans 10:9
You can take it further than tribal. Even other species do this. Vampire bats who have a nice harvest of blood in a given night will share with other bats in the brood that came home hungry. It's been shown that this behavior is also mediated by other factors, like whether the hungry bat has donated blood in the past. Really fascinating. At any rate, this news about altruism doesn't surpise me in the least. It's been speculated with some very sound arguments to be the case for some time -- as by Richard Dawkins, a biologist who uses the bats as an example in one of his books. Unfortunately having read so many of them I couldn't tell you for sure which one.
I know you are joking, and I laughed -- that is funny.
But in all seriousness, there are no modern sci-fi single-player CRPGS. None. Go ahead, name one. It doesn't exist. The last good one I played was "Fallout II," and that's several generations behind the modern technology. You can't say "Knights of the Old Republic II" because frankly, the Star Wars Universe is tired (and besides, it's still all swords. Light-saber? Gimmeabreak.) Plus, it wasn't a good, open-ended RPG. I want Oblivion with laser guns. I want Planescape: Torment with spacesuits. I want Fallout III.
I am sick to death of elves and swords. Sick. Of. It.
Beliefs like that lead one down the road of mediocrity.
Seconded. I'm not a brilliant programmer because I was born coding. I'm not a brilliant programmer because I have a "knack" or "innate talent." I'm a brilliant programmer because I spend all of my time studying and doing it; I work very hard to draw distinctions other people miss, and I seek out feedback and seek to always improve.
The GP's suggestion that some people are just "naturally" good at some things shows a startling lack of understanding about the educational process. You show me a good XYZer and I'll show you someone who's put a lot of effort into XYZing.
Those people who you hear about who are "naturally talented" fall into one of two categories:
1) They are talented and spent a lot of time and effort getting that way, you just fail to see the time and effort -- you are just seeing the "end product."
or
2) They aren't actually talented at anything except selling themselves and a cursory examination of their "talents" will prove this.
UGLY BAGS OF MOSTLY WATER
No, I think you're right... I got the EXACT SAME VISION!
Which obviously means all we have to do now is search all the backyards with slopes and trees, and we'll have the evidence!!!
Idiot.

I've been a Zap2it subscriber for at least three years for my MythTV.
At first, they made me fill out a big online survey as "payment" for the service. The first time it was about 30 questions.
The third time (this is like every 3-6 months) they only asked one question.
For the last year, the survey has been "click here to renew."
What's with that? I'm willing to give up some personal time and info to pay for this service, and they can't even think of a way to leverage that?
I mean, my postal mailbox is totally free of spam-like mail, because companies have to /pay/ for postal mail.
It totally changed the way I used my computer! I used to use it quite comfortably, and everything worked, and I was somewhat pleased.

So when my ex and I parted ways, and she asked me to leave her a PC with Linux on it... that meant she wanted us to get back together? Doubtful.
Could it be that some girls actually prefer linux for the same reasons we guys do?
I've never switched operating systems to bag a girl.

Really, so that installs and configures and sets up the databases for MySQL?
Yup. (Bet you feel stupid now!)
Does that set up all your channels, the XML TV feed and all the other stuff that is required.
No, but setting up your channel list is a cinch. I can't think of any other stuff that is required.
SageTV might be great; I haven't tried it. But your criticism of MythTV is unfounded.
I think you missed my point. I'm suggesting that the more you train an idiot user to use the package manager and never install third-party packages, the more you have trained them off bad behaviour that's likely to someday lead to a compromise of their system.

Play one of their recent, 3d games, and you will see. Knights of the Old Jade Empire, whatever.

As someone who has been running MythTV on Ubuntu boxes for years now, I agree. Skip Redhat.
Installing MythTV on modern versions of Ubuntu is easy:
apt-get install mythtv-server mythtv-frontend
That's it, you're done*!
(* I assume; I run my clients and server on seperate machines and the server is still a few versions behind the Ubuntu curve)

You ever try to move a directory structure full of source code from one place to another in CVS -- or even to move or rename a single file...?
HINT: When you do it the way CVS provides, you will lose all of your revision history.
SVN does not have this fatal flaw.
Hey, I've got a better idea. You ask someone who was killed and we'll compare answers.
