It's sad to see how many people are struggling to simply survive in this day and age. Should I really be impressed with people who donate their riches towards funding a television show? Are they suggesting that inspiration, and thus science and education, will really die without this particular television show? Is human progress going to whither because of the cancellation?
If we want to ensure inspiration and progress, perhaps that money would be better spent towards textbooks or computers or food.
I have to agree, I think the Sims is probably the best non-violent game I've ever played. Further, it really makes it fun just to be playing a character with a normal, routine lifestyle. SimCity 3000, Roller Coaster Tycoon, SimPark, etc., would all be great. They're accessible at many different age levels, and all involve problem-solving, critical thinking, long term planning, short term risks/benefits, etc.
In my limited experience and word-of-mouth in this industry, it seems like the only way you'll get funding as an unproven game developer is to actually build a prototype... Even a limited, one-level engine that might "fake" a lot of the things you anticipate having in the final release will work find (a lot of games have even been pitched and funded based on dummied-up Shockwave mockups of a game!)
Having just entered the game biz recently, I actually did it the stealthy way: I DIDN'T come in the graphics route... rather, I came in on the networking and community side of things, strong knowledge of sockets, Unix, Linux, etc., as well as building communities and environments for the dot-com world. This ties in pretty nicely to where multiplayer games are going, and now I can take some time and learn more about graphics and engine design while I work.
This is insane. People don't want to believe that a Scott McNealy and Larry Ellison regime would be as bad as the Microsoft status quo... It's quite obvious the only TRUE open atmosphere will be platforms and languages totally developed without profit for gain... Oracle pushes Java because it will help get rid of the SQL Server / COM+ majority. Sun pushes Java so hard to get people then hooked into Solaris (happened at my company). No better than BillG.

Agreed, it should be "XFiles" == "dead"
