The sad part about this post is its truth! If you work as a network admin, I'm sure you've had the pleasure of seeing what AOL does to the user's network configuration.
WTF is the 'AOL Adapter' anyway, and why does it sometimes replace the network card completely (most of the time it gets put in along side the network card)?
Maybe you didn't see that Tom was using SUSE (the picture at the start of the article). SUSE launches X at runlevel 3. Redhat uses 5. I think Debian uses 2.
Unfortunately, that won't include the nVidia kernel module. It's not open source, and Redhat will not be including it. You do end up with a reduced number of steps, though.
I don't see how these companies expect to profit from Instant Messaging. I've never seen an ad on LICQ.
As far as I can tell, having ICQ, AIM, YIM, etc just serves to divide up the users onto different programs. How convenient for us.
Sure, no company is going to give in and let the other win, but this is just a pain in the ass. All my friends use ICQ, but all of my (non-technical) relatives use AIM.
Luckily there are some programs like Jabber that solve this, but where is this whole IM competition going? Who is profiting from having to develop independently and maintain servers and bandwidth for this?
The tax hikes might be more palatable if Congressmen weren't continually voting to give themselves raises, passing laws that essentially say what the company that paid for them wanted, and creating a bigger and bigger government.
It is hard to believe that paying more taxes would bring about decent education, or reasonable healthcare. Congress would find some crap to spend it on because some jackass bribed them to. Why should I dump more money into that? I'm not willing to pay more taxes until we start doing something useful with the money.
Sorry, I don't own an SUV, and I wish that they were never made. I'm looking forward to picking up one of the new hybrid cars. It's not that I can't afford an SUV - I choose not to because they are environmentally horrible.
Go ahead, move to Asterdam and pay obscene taxes. Of course, if you vote for Gore, you'll end up paying obscene taxes here.
Yes, 'W' is somewhat of an idiot with some not-so-good ideas. Gore would like to create a new Department for every issue and triple the size of the government. Is that a good option? More laws, more government, more taxes?
Why can't we get an intelligent candidate who doesn't want to screw the environment or inflate government until it bursts?
Create a nul interface (many routers support this) and update your routing tables to route RFC1918 into the nul interface. Easier and better than using an ACL.
Obviously, this is not always feasible. Many cable/DSL ISPs use RFC 1918 addresses for the Cable/DSL modem devices (there is DHCP option 82 to distinguish whether the request came from the customer's PC or their cable modem). So, you'd have to let the traffic get all the way to your border router before stopping it.
Coke is actually planning to reduce advertising in hopes to reduce a little market share. They feel that they are overextended and are not maximizing profits. They think that they have figured out exactly how much Coke they want to distribute and in what forms (can/2 Liter or syrup) to maximize earnings.
Quite an interesting situation for a company. They don't feel a need to compete with Pepsi and they think that the marketing competition is actually hurting them. So, they are still going to have cool, catchy ads, but they aren't going to just cram it down your throat.
Maybe that will make Pepsi take that obnoxious little girl out of commercials. I *hate* that damn girl, and the dumb things they make her say.
One other thing: does anyone find it unsettling that a company (Pepsi) would use the likeness of a well respected (dead) famous person (Einstein) to hawk their product? I do. I find that really disrespectful.
Possibly we could keep a wish list of what to fix, or what to extract and use in other projects? I'm not sure how well this worked for Mozilla, since I had no participation there.
I have seen a lot of complaints about Star Office, and I think that they represent some very important needs.
Mozilla didn't seem to help Netscape in market share, or product punctuality. Maybe something will go different here.
Uhh, I looked at it and the ATI has better color. Nvidia must be cutting corners for speed.
That gets a 4; Interesting? Good grief - it should be -1 flamebait. Even if this was done with same model monitors and same settings, it is a completely useless statement.
More often...revealing the bugs and needed work-arounds with the video card's implimentation Umm, any data to back this up? I don't recall reading about this before. Usually, when people make these statements, they provide a little evidence to go with it.
Nah, capitalism doesn't suck. Marketers and lawyers make it suck. They're out to make money and nothing else. The engineers (for the most part) just want to make the best product possible. The problem with the market now is that the best product doesn't win - the best marketed product wins. Reviews are paid for (apparently Ion Storm was out of money when they released Daikatana). Performance tests are paid for. The consumer has no idea that they aren't getting the best product.
This is not the issue. Best Buy/CompUSA/etc account for little volume in computer sales. As well, they are low margin because consumers want a cdrom drive and a 56k modem and they want it cheap.
Businesses comprise the bulk of sales. How many businesses have AMD chips in their computers? Very few.
Business buyers don't follow Tom's Hardware and Anandtech to see how compatible and how fast AMD is vs. Intel. They don't care. They'd be even less inclined to get an AMD chip if they did read the reviews. Some unheard of chipset that has compatibility problems with various cards.
In the business world, AMD is doing as well against Intel as Linux is against Windows. AMD was smart to target gamers and enthusiasts. Transmeta may as well be BeOS. Yeah, I'll buy a webpad, but my company won't buy one for everyone.
that is a really poor quote. they see it as a threat to their political control. they don't see it as a tool. they see restricting access to it as a way to maintain their control. that is not a tool.
Did Microsoft reimburse Dell for all the time they had to spend to implement these measures? They put an unnecessary strain on Dell's engineers to server the customer while at the same time abiding by the new MS licensing garbage. If I were Dell, I'd be pissed about it.
As another note, if I buy a computer with Windows on it (like I have many choices), I shouldn't have to run that copy on that machine. I could wipe it out, put Linux on it, and decide to use Windows on another machine. That is my right, as I own one copy of the software.
I think there was a very important statement in the news.com story. Something along the lines of 'Intel just has to get close. If I'm most MIS guys, I'll choose Intel over Transmeta.'
That's very true. Even products coming from the likes of IBM and Gateway, most corporations (read: where the bulk of sales are) will choose a product with an Intel chip. Unlike Linux vs Windows, it is harder for an IT guy to see the merits of a Transmeta chip over an Intel chip. This will be a hard battle for Transmeta to fight.
Can someone please explain: Why?

While I am continually amazed at what the Palm seems capable of, I must ask why you would want a midi synthesizer for Palm. If it were free, I would probably play with it. However, does this have a real market?
I liked Myst. However, it is a series of puzzles with pretty things to look at. Most people who played the original will be able to get through it again in 15 minutes. Part of the fun of a game like that was figuring out the puzzles and exploring. It's not something that you could play again.
Please, make a sequel in 3D, the original game all over again would just be a walkthrough.

maybe you haven't see wordpad (write.exe). it does fonts and formatting.

You must hate reading posts here! Of course, if you ignore grammar, it's not so bad.
One of the important considerations, though, is that many of the people who contribute here do not speak English as a primary language.

Umm... Maybe you noticed that the post said "the estate of", which indicates that the poster knew of her death.
only until the spiders learn to pick that up too.

Either way you word it, they cannot control *which* machine I use it on, unless they change the license.

They're expensive. But, they're still bought.
This is what sheet music can solve. get a pen and a piece of paper and write it down. if you're a musician, you know how to write sheet music.
