Yes, turning of JS is a good idea if you're so enraged by advertisements that keep content free that you can't see straight enough to read an article. And people that would stop going to a free site because it serves pop-under ads solely for that reason are NOT a large enough group to dent a page's hits, except maybe for /. I never said I was smarter than he for leaving JS on. I just object to the superior attitude of people that lord their preference settings over other people. Which he was doing. It's like bragging about not owning a TV. Great, you like to read. Me too. Stop bringing it up. What exactly did I say that was stupid?

You are sooooooooo fucking smart. Not. You act like you're superior to people who see ads just because you checked a different box in your preferences. Grow up. JavaScript is nice when it makes things perty. It's nice to have pop-ups that contain help files or instructions for filling out a form. Pop-under ads are good because they pay for free content. Don't like ads? Close the windows or ignore them, boycott the companies that run them. But if you want free content, then put up with them and shut the fuck up.

Amazon.com loses money on every item they sell
    No they don't.
They lose money because their fixed costs are larger than the gross profit on their sales, or so they claim. Their marginal costs for a $10 book sale are less than $10, but they don't have enough of those sales to overcome their high administrative costs (Know as SG&A on their 10K). SG&A DO NOT rise with sales, so higher sales will mean that they are eventually profitable. More sales is good for them.
Just because a company is unprofitable doesn't mean they lose money on every item sold.

So Al wouldn't doa Mastercard parody, only because they wouldn't want him to, but he could if he felt like it.

Record sales are up higher than they have ever been in the past.

That is meaningless. You have no idea what record sales would have been without Napster. Even if sales are rising it doesn't mean they wouldn't have risen even more without Napster. Napster may be hurting the record companies not because they're making less money than they did in the past but because they've been deprived of income they would have gotten without it. And for every person who says they buy more music because of Napster, I'll show you someone who buys none because of it.

Well, he might have appended it to a sentence about Eminem, Fred Durst (Limp Bizkit), or Vanilla Ice. The differentiating factor here is techie, not skin color.
Most techies we admire have done quite a bit to deserve our admiration for their intellect. Most rappers have not. Thus is makes sense to praise them, or at least isn't absurd or insulting.
Why assume it's about race? Why bother complianing about someone who handed out a deserved compliment?

  9. Re:Reverse discrimination on Racism At Microsoft? · · Score: 2

Uh, you must mean reverse discrimination right? Clearly there are no absence of blacks in most of the major sports (except for ice hockey). I'm not trying to be a bigot, but in sports I think it's almost detrimental to be white nowadays.

Look at their front/back offices. Few coaches are black, few, if any, owners are black, etc, etc. And except for the lucky few major stars, most of the players (who are minorities) are used/abused for a couple of years and then let go for a younger, cheaper player of equal ability. This happens especially often in football, where most rookies get $150-$200k per year, and players with 3+ years of experience have a minimum of $300k or so. Doesn't make sense to keep those guys around.
So you let them go without any sort of safety net, and hire your white buddy for the managing/coaching job. These guys have gone through HS and colege with football as their meal ticket and have no other skills. Now they have to pick up and start over from nothing at 25-30 years old.
That's unfortunate. It's race-related since so few of the minorities get a chance to be involved in sports off the field. And it's not reverse discrimination. People love a white star, but they aren't excited to see a black coach.

Low-paid unskilled workers - I hire these kinds of folks all the time to do the simplest of tasks for me and the best are nowhere near 100%.
