Of course, services have been the big turning point in the big international organisations. The IMF and European Union are two major organisations who have tried to increase international competition in the service industries.
In the EU, service industry liberalisation has driven prices down Apparently, with international competition for services.
But maybe that's just a pipe dream.. reality is that when you start to liberalise services this is what happens, authority gets confused. I don't mean let's have communism for authority's sake, but if the lines get confused..
I don't know why it's socialism to believe that some services are run better by local organisations - or not-for-profit companies as is done so well in the EU. But I'm just rambling now..
You know some old guy actually said to me the other week "We never had blackouts in my day!", and I thought.. so YOU'RE the one who let the Germans know where the people were!
Ironic thing is that their usually speaking to someone on the enxt block.. Worst thing is in Europe, where everyone has hands-free kits and I'm constantly scared that they're talking at me, or to themselves, or constantly revealing information to some secret service of some sort.
As for driving like a maniac.. what do you expect when you have to put up with CNN for entertainment?
UK Universities specialise strongly in one subject, but seem to want to move toward the American system. I think the UK system is superior, because subject-specific skills are relevant to many careers.
They had a President who under Article 48 of their Constitution could've kept on appointing non-Hitlers for at least enough time for a Civil War to break out..
The fact is Hindeburg was human, succumbed to Von Papen's persuasion just as a Monarch quite easily could have. Do you believe in the Divine Right of Kings or something? Why would a Monarch have more or less impartiality/roundness of decision-making than an elected President with emergency powers?
"But Doctor, if they take away my head surely I'll die?"
1) I agree.
2) Impartial? How about simply neuted? I can really imagine the Queen arguing for the Lib Dems with Phillip..
3) Sovereignty? I don't want any of it lying in an unelected monarch on the off chance he/she might be any better than a tyrant. Sure our Queen now is just about OK, but if a future Monarch was unstable then we'd be much worse off.
"But Doctor, if they take away my head surely I'll die?"
Oh she spends very little I'm sure, I'm talking about maintenance of Palaces, Castles, Royal homes etc. Not to mention her mother's dysfunctional hip.. no hang on.. National Health Service..
God bless Britannia and all her handcounts.
"But Doctor, if they take away my head surely I'll die?"
yeh god - british (note the one 't') taxpayers paying for a system that will probably never occur would be the funniest thing in the world wouldn't it? isn't the misfortune of others amazingly hilarious?!?
apart from criticising your bizzare spellings and truly twisted sense of humour, i feel i should point out that the British government's bill is likely to be merely setting a precedent for future bills worldwide..
"But Doctor, if they take away my head surely I'll die?"
I think you'll find Britain si, and has been, a fully-functioning Parliamentary democracy since 1911 - when the Parliament Act made it impossible for unelected peers to block Bills.
Although the Queen supposedly had power, if she tried to do anything at all then she would almost certainly be overthrown and a new Constitution drafted.
I personally would like to see the Queen go - but since she's doing nothing there (except taking taxpayers' money) it doesn't bother me day-to-day. I hate (what i assume are) American misconceptions.
"But Doctor, if they take away my head surely I'll die?"
interesting idea since i was known to be a communist.. but i turned against it..
i was comparing what is a very common belief of the downpoints of communism with copyright law because if i hadn't thought of an analogy within 5 minutes I would have had comment 140-odd which would have been worthless.
i do apologise about the apostrophe - i never used to put one but strangely slashdot has affected my mind..
"But Doctor, if they take away my head surely I'll die?"
"Anyway, without copyright protection we wouldn't have enough articles posted to/. to pass the day... we might even end up doing some work:-)"
not even open source is that powerful..
"But Doctor, if they take away my head surely I'll die?"
"The difference is, I can have your's, without you not having it."
I agree, most certainly, and I am a big advocate of open source - BUT...
Not everyone is, and they never will be. People will always be paranoid (what if someone else is using MY work somewhere else making more money?) and they will always want to think that they have some exclusive right over what they have made.
And.. although I hate comparing two distinct subjects this is where the Communism-analogy comes in. Of course there will be people who believ in Communism and try to make it worth but they will never be the majority - and even a minority of those wanting copyright justifies it's existence.
In my opinon - if you want copyright you have the right, if you don't you have the right. It's your choice but you must also repsect other people's.
"But Doctor, if they take away my head surely I'll die?"
Copyright exists due to human pride but also human greed and jealousy. Much like communism, life without copyright is a theoretical dream that would not last in reality.
If we were to start again without copyright there is no doubt in my mind that it would eventually appear again, for it is human nature to want what is your's to stay your's.
Anyone agree?
"But Doctor, if they take away my head surely I'll die?"
He was from London

A thousand apologies to all I may have misled, it was actually a home-made version before.
I will never again jump to conclusions
I'll try and verify the date/time but this has definetly been here before... is slashdot's memory getting shorter (no insult intended).
in my experience of the army theyre not fanatically loyal to the queen, but your points are fair enough.

Patriotic? I loathe Britain.

Thanks for the correction. As you say it's "effectively a democracy", and that was my point.
