Monty Python and the Search for the Holy Lego
slashdoter writes: "What could be better than combining Lego and Monty Python and the search for the holy grail? Well recording it and putting it online of course. Follow the link
and smile." Quicktime or Windows Media. Scary. Needs to be much longer. :)
Nice! It IS a silly place, but very fun.
That was really cool. Check out the 'Jewel Quest' (indiana jones)... i liked that even better.
Don't Tread on Me
I watched this once it popped up on Ain't It Cool News (aintitcool.com) yesterday. Imagine CGI but with Legos. It looked more fluid than the old stop-motion clay-based creatures, yet I could see no obvious wires or such. It seemed very fluid, and yes, it was freaky due to the level of (I hate to say it) professionalism.
Next thing you know, we'll have Connectix emulating Matrix, GI Joe re-creating the Gulf War, and Lincon Logs re-enacting the chopping of the cherry tree!
Vote monkeys into Congress. They are cheaper and more trustworthy.
If you could somehow work Linux into the equation, 1,000,000 slashdot readers would jizz their pants simultaneously.

Anybody else sick of Lego and Python?
This is an understandable response to the horror and its effect on slashdot. It is an attempt to create a common culture among geeks.
Well I think everyone should look at the debates on the Slashdot site about the WTC bombing, and look at all the different perspectives, and you will see that we all come from very differenet cultures and these cultures determine our views on important questions. We cannot really create a common culture with Nerf, Athlon, Linux, Monty Python, or Star Wars.
I think that the slashdot editors are posting stories like this in order to bring back together a community which could easily fracture over the WTC retaliation arguments and arguments about safety, liberty and security.
It is far more important to work through these arguments than to distract readers from them. This site has a constituency with the most chance of any to shed light on all perspectives of security and freedom questions, at least w/r/t technology.
Although slashdot editors might not like >1K comments in a story, those threads will be more useful, and the conclusions from them more lasting, if we post these stories instead of Monty Python crap. Let the front page have space for these debates, and sideline Monty and Legos into the humor section.

...this is the new frontier of animation.
Where can I find the specs of these formats?
Glad I got to see it before then!
Now if only there were a Lego "holy hand grenade"...
And where the heck is Sir Robin???
"I thought I had an Appetite for Destruction, when all I really wanted was a club sandwich."
How can I play these on my Linux box? Is there a codec for xanim, or do I need a different player?

Don't piss off The Angry Economist
A thousand apologies to all I may have misled, it was actually a home-made version before.
I will never again jump to conclusions
"Fun Gums"
OK, someone's got way too much free time and/or Lego's got too much money laying around.
;)
That said, I wouldn't mind if they did whole movie
can you do with the lego studio product out of the box?
I'm assuming things like the moving lips involve some kind of professional ($$$) equipment not included in the base/retail product.
I knew I'd seen this somewhere before...
2001-08-21 23:09:18 Monty Python and the Holy Grail animated in Lego (articles, quickies)
I thought it worthy of only a quickie. Ahh well anyway....
This was done by a friend of mine, Tim Drage and his associate Tony Mines. Together they form
Spite Your Face Productions. Check that site for more Lego anim, including a condensed version of 2001.
And oh, they got paid to play with Lego by Lego itself. Neat, huh?

Am I the only one who thinks Microsoft is a misnomer? Perhaps Macrosoft would be a better fit?
finally, something to put my faith back behind the human race. figures it was monty python that did it. hehe.
on a more sensible note:
i've read a few comments bashing both monty python and lego in the preceding threads. these people just simply need to understand that lego is news for nerds, and monty python IS stuff that matters. the original python stuff was mostly political satire and the like. it was funny...but it was also relevant. although it may have lost some of that relevance in its move across the pond to the states, the ideas behind the python group live on...the social satire melded into hilarious comedy. its something that works. don't bash it.
as for lego...we all grew up on lego. as we get older, the company seems to offer more and more toys for us to use...and we, as a community, seem to come up with more innovative ways to use them. personally, i believe that lego promotes problem solving ability as well as sheer fun. as i've said previously: don't bash it.
thus, only one conclusion can be drawn from this:
MONTY PYTHON FSCKING ROCKS THE LEGO HOUSE!
Funny, I went to see the MPATHG re-release in the theatre last night, and after the Camelot scene, my friend turned to me and said "I think I liked the Lego one better!"
:P
And yes, this has been here before
It doesn't mean much now, it's built for the future.
It's only a model.

Remember, DVDs are evil! They won't let you copy them because the movie studios are evil and actually expect to be paid for spending millions of dollars to make a movie for people to see. And they won't let you view them on the .5% of computers which run Linux, either. Don't support DVDs!
I know you can't hear it but I clapping VERY loud right now

I was really surprised and impressed at some of the thoughtful, probing discussion of the terrorist attacks on Slashdot. Unlike many of the respondents to your post, I really do think the discussion is important.
... well, honestly, I don't care a rat's ass about the Xbox, so I just skip those articles. This astonishing power of indifference is available to you, too: if you are sick of the WTC, or Legos, or Monty Python, or Jon Katz ... don't read the frickin' article! The editors of Slashdot can only suggest topics of discussion; they can't make people care. Geek culture will emerge on its own, in all its quirky multifacted yummy goodness.
However, humor is important too. It reminds us of our humanity, and keeps us sane -- which, in the current rush for military retalitation, is a very important thing. If we can laugh for a moment, we may find our perspective on the serious is a bit more balanced when we return to it.
Neither the serious nor the silly is out of place here. And as for the "attempt to create a geek culture"
Another funny lego movie is Legos are not Enough. I saw this at a film festival, and it beat out all the other 'serious' films, even though it was made by a bunch of engineering students whereas its competition was made by people who wore a lot of black clothing.
First sketch-book style quake, and now Monty Python legos? /. page from last May! ;)

/. had stories about the WTC crises when there were things we would do to help, and when there were new developments. But this site is supposed to be "news for nerds", and there's nothing wrong with posting a funny story. If you want to debate the WTC crises, excellent - we do need to talk about this as a society. But /. is not always the place to talk about it.
/. was made for.
This story wasn't posted to save the community or some such thing - it was posted because it is a funny nerdy story, the sort of thing

When will people realize that the great comedic genius of late 20th century England was Benny Hill, not these numbskulls called Monty Python!
Come on, get with the program.
"Would it kill you to put down the toilet seat?" -- Maya Angelou
Use Windows. Chances are you already have a CD around, so it won't cost you a cent. Oh, and IE 6 is *years* ahead of any browser available for Linux, and Windows Media codecs get far better compression and sound quality than the stupid MPEG and Quicktime codecs.
what's your favorite Tori Amos album? Are you listening to it right now? Let's be buddies.
...well that was: you pay extra to be that lame.
In short, this allows you to view Shockwave, Quicktime movies, Word and Excel files from your browser (Netscape and Mozilla or Konqueror).
It runs the plugins in a Wine session, has it's own compact setup utility and is absolutely one of the best applications I've ever bought for my Linux system.
Oh, Did I mention you have to purchase it? it's 30USD for the cd, or 20USD for the downloadable version.
Know also if you purchase it you are supporting a company who happens to be the major financial backer for the Wine Project.

And me? I have no affiliation with them other than being a happy customer. It's time to give something back.
That was by far the best thing i have seen all week.
Maybe i need to get out more..
No unauthorized use. Trespassers will be shot. Survivors will be shot again.
Coming up with an approximate equation (perturbation theory is dedicated to doing this) is enough of a bitch that half of my second semester quantum class was spent exploring methods to do it.
"I haven't had quantum mechanics yet."
And you recognized the Schroedinger equation? Or did you just recognize h/2pi and the Coulomb potential? (side note: SHIT! I just realized that I put 1/r^2 in what was supposed to be the potential... been grading too much freshman e&m homework lately, thinking in forces and fields instead of potentials.) Either way, it's good to see another physics geek here.
Just b/c it's not linux compatable dosn't make it bad. Sure I would rather Have it in a Mpeg but it's still worth booting up windows or checking it out at work monday if your Linux pure at home.
Does anyone actually have a Java program designed to control air traffic, or for the operation of a nuclear facility?
If you want a more analytical (mathematically) treatment, try classics like E. Merzbacher, "Quantum Mechanics". The drawback is that its mathematics gets really convoluted at times but some people like it that way.
I myself like a more practical approach with numerical solution methods as there are no restrictions on the potential. That way I can also combine two loves of mine: Physics and coding. Try J.M. Thijssen's "Computational Physics" (Cambridge Press, 1999, ISBN 0 521 57588 5).
I'd also recommend Richard Feynman's "Lectures" series. Old, not very mathematical but has a VERY intuitive hands-on approach and brilliantly written.
There is no exact solution for 2 interacting particles in an external Coulomb field.
Monty Python the search for the holy block.

the plugin has an option to cache a copy. then it's just a matter of searching your hard drive.
as for downloading it... well, that's so complicated and all...
We're Knights of the Round Table.
We dance whene'er we're able.
We do routines and chorus scenes
With footwork impeccable.
We dine well here in Camelot.
We eat ham and jam and spam a lot.
We're Knights of the Round Table.
Our shows are formidable,
But many times we're given rhymes
That are quite unsingable.
We're opera mad in Camelot.
We sing from the diaphragm a lot.
In war we're tough and able,
Quite indefatigable.
Between our quests we sequin vests and impersonate Clark Gable.
It's a busy life in Camelot.
I have to push the pram a lot.
I would just like to take this opportunity to say that linux really sucks hardcore for many reasons.
This is for all the times I had to read m$ sucks when it had nothing to do with the article...
So there.
How darest thou besmirch the holiness that is photorealist animation and its Japanese conceptors! The greatness of that form is infinitely beyond all others, and any likes thineself who should denounce it can repent for that infinite sin by enduring and embracing infinite suffering in life and after! They thou mayest praise the holy Squaresoft and its Master Sakaguchi, who art the true Lord and Saviour in this age, and every age. Amen.
Yes? Yes? And then what happened? You can't leave it there, man .. finish the story!
This thread has been hit by the dreaded recursive down-moderation weapon of slashcode 2.0, a.k.a the Troll Nuke. Many innocent posts have been killed today. I'm about to throw up.

This is now my favorite clip on the Internet. All I want to know is when the entire movie is going to be released in Lego-vision.
Laws affecting technology will always be bad until enough techies become lawyers.
If its open source what's stoping someone else burning pkg CDs with all the info in the book in a txt file or 2, then flogging it at half the price the Connectix or whatever programmers are flogging their pkg CDs for, & then not giving the coders a cut at all?
f you think it's wrong to have to pay to access video files then, heck, I'm sympathetic, but the only way you're going to be able to avoid it is if folks help to support projects like Ogg Tarkin.
Free software is something you give, not something you can take. If the CodeWeavers folks have done good work, there's not a thing in the world wrong with them charging for it.

Ganymede, a GPL'ed metadirectory for UNIX
but does this have normal subtitles?
a friend of mine has been after subtitled Python for years, he's hearing impaired and they don't release subtitles for Python for some reason.
Have you done your homework yet?
OK. this is actually at test post, but I had to be at least *close* to on-topic.
