I like BSD. It is with out question a very good stable platform. It has a lot of cool stuff like Kerbros built in. Its development is more focused them most Linux distros. I think as a server it is better than linux But I like the choices I get with Linux. I fear that BSDi may be able to become as big of a bully as M$ or Red Hat are now. BSDi is full of very cool and talented people but they are beginning to get more and more suits to run the business side of things. IF and when they begine to dominat the market will I still have the choices I have now? Will they try to lock me into some standard or package for there benefit? I hope not. Many cool companies have become dicks once they became big enough. SUN, APPLE, Microsoft. As long as I can Run Debian GNU/Linux to do what I need, I will not be at there mercy. I very important thing to not forget. There is more than just the quality of the code to worry about there are the strings that may come with them. Right now I do not see a problem with BSDi but I fear that may start to change in the next year or so.
MIR is now very fast getting to the point that it is unsafe for it to be used. But things like Email, FTP, and Web are less sensitive about time issues. No one likes slow down loads but these users can often still work under very high trafic. QOS is a very useful tool with it you can have the students and the Administration fight it out for who should have more of the pipe and who should pay for it. You can force the issue of getting a bigger pipe. No one wants to pay for a bigger pipe and have it eaten up by the other side. With QOS you can insure them that they will get what they pay for and not have it eaten up by very one else. Every one gets the band with when it is open but the folks flipping the bill (and can be the students them selves not just the Administration) gets it when they need it. No I don't sell QOS systems just a Network Engineer that has been there. At an university and now at a corporation.

The Idea of a communication between individuals misses the point. People who work together for a common goal (the growth of there company as an example) Do begin to think alike and the group in general starts to develop a group personality and belief system regardless of how individual the people may see them selves. Truly divers opinions do not last long in a group that truly feel passionately about their beliefs. The differing opinion is shut out or treated is the token out side opinion. The opinions of the KKK will not last long in a NAACP member for example. In the end from the out side the group tacks on a singular personality with singular beliefs and dare I say it a singular agenda. This may seem bad but in truth it is just the way people in-groups are. It may seem like conspiracy but it is not. It just happens naturally. The only way to prevent this is to have good turn over of people or have a situation where the person who seems to dominate the group changes from time to time. In the end there are good groups and evil groups independent of the feeling of the individuals. All bias or not giving a dam. In the end it is what the groups do and how it effects others that matters not the lack of a secret meeting and official conspiracy. I don't mind the bias as long as it is not denied and the facts are true. I know where to go to get the other side of the story if I want it. Telnet, Rlogin and FTP are the bigest problem with secruity on university campuses. I worked at an university for many years. We had Linux and NT boxes and none of the NT Boxes had Telnet all fo the Linux Boxes did. All of the NT boxes did only one thing only mail (pop)only FTP. The linux boxes where set up to do every thing. When a cracker would hit us which it happened at lest 4 times a year. I would point out that we could turn off telnet and rlogin untill things can be fixed. NO WAY it was like a religion The same people who set up NT with out Telnet some how felt Linux could not work with out it. If you want to use telnet that is OK but not on every system with important information on it unless it was really nessary. The NT boxes did not do much better on security they went down a lot via DDS. People at universitys often are very green very understaffed and very much underpaided. They normaly dont have a clue what security is or how to obtain it or why. University Techs often have very little say on emplemting security. Telling them to just put up a stone wall ( no telnet, rlogin, FTP) is a good first step. The other solution would be to get more good people and more understanding and respect for what security is and why it is needed.
If you have to ask this question you most likely don't have a very big network. PC/Workstations routers do just fine on small network but lookout for four things. 1. If you need to connect WAN and LAN together Go Hardware. 2.If you need to PASS layer 2 traffic (bridging 802.2, net bios) and pass layer 3 traffic (Routing TCP/IP, IPX) yes you can bridge and rout at the same time. go hard ware (Cisco). 3 will you need to do ProxyARPing Go hardware. 4 if it is mission critical go hardware (Cisco) On the Other side if you need to do NAT, or Fire Walling go software. I recommend checkpoint running on BSD on Nokia Hardware. IF you need raw power and the fastest connection possible go to an Asic Router (a layer 3 switch). Good luck

Video, audio, mainframe based TCP/IP, or (god forbid) if you are bridging 802.2 SNA traffic if you don't have a good repose time (big pipe), sessions just drop. Users are forced to start over, video becomes very painful if not useless and soon you have users who can not do any thing at all besides get very very angry. But things like Email, FTP, and Web are less sensitive about time issues. No one likes slow down loads but these users can often still work under very high trafic. QOS is a very useful tool with it you can have the students and the Administration fight it out for who should have more of the pipe and who should pay for it. You can force the issue of getting a bigger pipe. No one wants to pay for a bigger pipe and have it eaten up by the other side. With QOS you can insure them that they will get what they pay for and not have it eaten up by very one else. Every one gets the band with when it is open but the folks flipping the bill (and can be the students them selves not just the Administration) gets it when they need it. No I don't sell QOS systems just a Network Engineer that has been there. At an university and now at a corporation.
This is a good Idea but it is not the source of the energy it is just a way of putting storing it like a battery. and just like a battery it will lose it energy over time. the Nitrogen gas unless you have a very strong bottle will slowly boil away and you will have to Fill up again even if you did not use the energy.
The discussion as about running a car off of the compression of Nitrogen. You could use just compressed air or CO2. if you use air to burn fuel you can get NO2 nor nox. This happens at high combustion temps. It is a smog test that can be failed. The use of the PSI gen. by liquid Nitrogen to gas nitrogen to run an engine kind of like a steam engine will not make nox it is not an issue
If the NSA had found a way to solve encryption problems that can also be used solve many other problems like making better microchips, faster searches of data, and smaller electronics, etc. For example all NP complete problems are the same if you can find an all-purpose solution for one you can use it for any NP complete problem. This would be of a great economic value to any one. Is there a way to have people from out side of the NSA look at you technology and lobby to have it made public for the common good if not too dangerous for national Security. For example if the early work of Allen Turing was keep from the public computer science as we know it might be 30 40 or even 50 years behind. We have this kind of thing with NASA and there technology can help a country make ICBM's so why not the NSA.
It is clear that Cuba, China, Libya, Etc. has the ability to download restricted encryption from the places out side of the US and it would not be hard to illegally down load it from the US so why try to stop this from happing. I had to wait 48 hours so that my Nokia account can be activated because They needed to process the request by hand to confirm I was in the US. I needed a SSH client. There are many cases of the US Government trying to stop very good and useful things like VPNs and Kerros in its early days because of encryption. Everyone I know thinks it is a joke the restrictions are not working and can not work so what purpose do they serve and how much longer will this need to go on.
The Idea of a communication between individuals misses the point. People who work together for a common goal (the growth of there company as an example) Do begin to think alike and the group in general starts to develop a group personality and belief system regardless of how individual the people may see them selves. Truly divers opinions do not last long in a group that truly feel passionately about their beliefs. The differing opinion is shut out or treated is the token out side opinion. The opinions of the KKK will not last long in a NAACP member for example. In the end from the out side the group tacks on a singular personality with singular beliefs and dare I say it a singular agenda. This may seem bad but in truth it is just the way people in-groups are. It may seem like conspiracy but it is not. It just happens naturally. The only way to prevent this is to have good turn over of people or have a situation where the person who seems to dominate the group changes from time to time. In the end there are good groups and evil groups independent of the feeling of the individuals. All bias or not giving a dam. In the end it is what the groups do and how it effects others that matters not the lack of a secret meeting and official conspiracy. I don't mind the bias as long as it is not denied and the facts are true. I know where to go to get the other side of the story if I want it. As for Microsoft Bill Gates is a very dominant personality. He sets the tone and culture of Microsoft more than anyone else. In the end they are evil because of the things they do not for the feeling of some or even all of there employees.
The excuse is that they want to stop people from sending and receiving stuff like contracts and equipment with out it going though legal or inventory. Knowing how most sales people are they will do anything to get around people and departments. They will try to send you an contracts for this or that and if an employee signs it you are stuck as a company being liable for something you may not want. Also trying to track expensive equipment that never got inventoried. The Difference is I can tell if some one has ripped open my mail and box of equipment. I don't really like it but I understand. I figure it gives me some protection form mail bombs ;-). Email if they don't tell you will never know.
You reasons for a quiet system are good get a fan and some ducking and pipe the heat out of your box to the fan that can be places fare away. Move the Drives away as well and the CPU all you need is some lights and the removable media drives. Get the rest on the floor or even better in a sound resident box this may seem extreme but microphones can be very sensitive an can pick up sound you normally do not hear or ignore. Public key Private key encryption is easy to do that is why it is done not that it is the "BEST for security". Really strong encryption NP HARD is much harder to do and may tack much longer to set up. So not a real option at this time for Credit card purchases. The risk is having something that is trusted (like how some people trust RSA) and then have it cracked with out you knowing. That is the real danger and I am not talking your Pr0n collection but stuff like GOV to Embassy communications corporate info. Stuff that can cost big money, jobs and Lives. For things that important it is stupid to use non-NP HARD solution if possible. I personally think the US GOV can and does crack most PUBLIC/Private Key encryptions in real time. The size and scope of the effort to crack encryption is huge even by Government standards and the US has had a constant Program in place for at lest 50 years. And what I read of history is true they seem pretty good at it too.
Water is not necessary for all life but most life we know needs it or lives in it. It helps do many things that is important for most life on every planet pass earth. Water needs huge amounts of BTU's to go from ice to water from water to steam and back. The Latent heat of water helps regulate the heat of a planet as it spins in space. This helps keep earth warm at night and this helps with life here. It also helps tell how old a planet is for water will evaporate or sublime off most smaller planets (not enough gravity to hold it down) in to space, a reason believed that mars has signs of being very wet in the pass but seems very dry now. The discovery of Ice on the moon puts its age in to question. Why is the ice still there after all of this time. Some are thinking A. the moon is newer than the earth or mars or B. ice keeps falling on it via meteors. Water is a very important thing to know about on other planets not to mention it helps us not to have to carry as much water with us if we come over to visit.
I can say that Apple is making a 500-foot robot with left over MAG. NeXt case parts. It shoots fire, talks and can fly!! It dose not mean it is true. Maybe some one hit too close to home on this one a simple not true or no comment would other wise do. I like the cube thing. I hope they do it.
Telnet, Rlogin and FTP are the bigest problem with secruity on university campuses. I worked at an university for many years. We had Linux and NT boxes and none of the NT Boxes had Telnet all fo the Linux Boxes did. All of the NT boxes did only one thing only mail (pop)only FTP. The linux boxes where set up to do every thing. When a cracker would hit us which it happened at lest 4 times a year. I would point out that we could turn off telnet and rlogin untill things can be fixed. NO WAY it was like a religion The same people who set up NT with out Telnet some how felt Linux could not work with out it. If you want to use telnet that is OK but not on every system with important information on it unless it was really nessary. The NT boxes did not do much better on security they went down a lot via DDS. People at universitys often are very green very understaffed and very much underpaided. They normaly dont have a clue what security is or how to obtain it or why. University Techs often have very little say on emplemting security. Telling them to just put up a stone wall ( no telnet, rlogin, FTP) is a good first step. The other solution would be to get more good people and more understanding and respect for what security is and why it is needed.
If you have to ask this question you most likely don't have a very big network. PC /Workstations routers do just fine on small network but lookout for four things. 1. If you need to connect WAN and LAN together Go Hardware. 2.If you need to PASS layer 2 traffic (bridging 802.2, net bios) and pass layer 3 traffic (Routing TCP/IP, IPX) yes you can bridge and rout at the same time. go hard ware (Cisco). 3 will you need to do ProxyARPing Go hardware. 4 if it is mission critical go hardware (Cisco) On the Other side if you need to do NAT, or Fire Walling go software. I recommend checkpoint running on BSD on Nokia Hardware. IF you need raw power and the fastest connection possible go to an Asic Router (a layer 3 switch). Good luck
