Why do police have patrol cars that just drive around? For one, it's a deterrent to those few bad guys; for another, it makes for a quicker response to a specific incident. Replace a few patrol cars with patrol drones and you could potentially reduce costs, improve traffic flow (all those dicks who slam on the brakes when they see a car with a light bar), and have a much wider area of coverage. Of course you couldn't replace all patrol cars with drones, but it's probably feasible to replace some.
In the case of magnetic media, lasers write by literally burning sections of the disc and read by reading the reflections from burnt/unburnt sections to get bits (commercially pressed discs have bumps instead of burned sections, but are read in much the same manner). From what I recall, CD burners are separate lasers for burning and reading. Optical media just happens to use lasers for both reading and writing, but they're two different lasers (assuming I remember correctly).
I'm guessing here, but I'm assuming for magnetic media, the energy from the laser targets the magnetic bit and causes it to flip in a similar manner to how CDs are burnt, but because its magnetic, lasers can't also be used to read it so you'd need a traditional magnetic head.
Just like Gmail, Google+ and a host of other Google services started out limited to a very small group... and then they expanded the beta to their entire user base later on.
Isn't it the dream of every company to kill the competition? And isn't the point of patents controlling your innovations, including limiting your competition from using them? It seems to me they're taking a fairly normal and ethic (as far as businesses are ethical these days) route to the whole thing. It's bad business for everyone if companies believe they can get away with infringing patents and then just pay for licensing if they get caught.

Because of the lack of Ethernet, the Model A is predicted to be more of a niche board aimed mostly at schools teaching programming. The Model B is more of a mainstream board with more practical features (thus the extra $10).
It sounds like they're planning on moving that way eventually, but it takes time to negotiate, etc when dealing with many different nations. From the official FAQ:
Will the device be available internationally? We intend to ship worldwide from launch. We may establish a distribution network in due course.
How much will it cost to ship to [country X]? We don’t know yet; we’re still negotiating about logistics. The people we’re talking to have local distribution points all over the world, so you can have your Raspberry Pi shipped from somewhere closer than the UK.
Free files for everyone!
Three of my websites are .com. I am located in the USA. Should I not trust my files to myself?

I'm OK with everyone having drones so long as I'm the only one with the fuel to power them.
As long as AT&T isn't in charge of the wireless. That'd be one hell of a dropped call.
Saw that, but it makes it look more like four-legged Houndeye from Half-Life
Whatever you call it, it's still creepy without anything resembling a head.
Why? Are they firing anomalous materials from the railgun?

Lasers are currently used in reading optical media like CDs and DVDs... this is magnetic media
Good for you? I don't think Google cares a whole hell of a lot.

Religious fanaticism. All the browsers have it.

You need to upgrade all of your Linux servers to Windows. Our friends in Redmond assure us this is an improvement of utmost importance.
They're pretty good at taking down websites en masse. Surely that takes some kind of skill?

That is the only place they will be sold in the foreseeable future.

If they don't have ass, where's all this crap coming from?
Windows 8 is supposed to have ARM support, so may still be able to dual boot.
Break out your Legos and make a case.
It doesn't ship with Linux. Or any other operating system. You can buy an SD card with Linux pre-installed, but that's a separate purchase.
We appreciate your prediction that it has a good chance of succeeding.

To the contrary, I'm reminded of the Dark Ages every time someone TYPES LIKE THIS.
