Why do police have patrol cars that just drive around? For one, it's a deterrent to those few bad guys; for another, it makes for a quicker response to a specific incident. Replace a few patrol cars with patrol drones and you could potentially reduce costs, improve traffic flow (all those dicks who slam on the brakes when they see a car with a light bar), and have a much wider area of coverage. Of course you couldn't replace all patrol cars with drones, but it's probably feasible to replace some.

In the case of magnetic media, lasers write by literally burning sections of the disc and read by reading the reflections from burnt/unburnt sections to get bits (commercially pressed discs have bumps instead of burned sections, but are read in much the same manner). From what I recall, CD burners are separate lasers for burning and reading. Optical media just happens to use lasers for both reading and writing, but they're two different lasers (assuming I remember correctly).

I'm guessing here, but I'm assuming for magnetic media, the energy from the laser targets the magnetic bit and causes it to flip in a similar manner to how CDs are burnt, but because its magnetic, lasers can't also be used to read it so you'd need a traditional magnetic head.

Isn't it the dream of every company to kill the competition? And isn't the point of patents controlling your innovations, including limiting your competition from using them? It seems to me they're taking a fairly normal and ethic (as far as businesses are ethical these days) route to the whole thing. It's bad business for everyone if companies believe they can get away with infringing patents and then just pay for licensing if they get caught.

We intend to ship worldwide from launch. We may establish a distribution network in due course.

How much will it cost to ship to [country X]?
We don’t know yet; we’re still negotiating about logistics. The people we’re talking to have local distribution points all over the world, so you can have your Raspberry Pi shipped from somewhere closer than the UK.
