  1. Re:Oh my goodness no! on Larsen Ice Shelf Collapses · · Score: 2, Informative

Umm, actually plant growth is much more related to the amount of sunshine that the plant gets over the course of it's active cycle. The longer and sunnier a summer is, the more growth that occurs. The diminished growth observed in the years following a major volcanic event could probably be better tied to the amount of ash in the upper atmosphere, which blocks the sunlight. Cooler temperatures are a byproduct of this, and are thus _indirectly_ related to the amount of growth recorded in the trees. The localized (localized by a few years) effect of lowered temperatures is not an indication of whether or not the volcanic event has effected "global warming" as even the greenies point to the fact that global warming is a gradual effect which can only be seen over the course of decades. Of course they only point that out when it helps their argument.

This will only work until the RIAA starts pumping up the fees that online radio stations have to pay to stream songs. Currently broadcast radio stations don't pay any fees to send songs out on the airwaves, but since "digital media"==piracy, radio stations which do simulcast over the internet have to pay royalty fees for their content. Purely digital radio stations are still arguing over how much they should have to pay.

I believe the RIAA is taking the approach that it is possible to make a digital copy from streaming media, so since there is a DMCA blah blah blah. I am not sure about that. I do remember reading awhile ago (last December??) that this move was going to hurt college radio stations that have a simulcast. I expect it to eventually hurt all radio stations broadcasting on the internet, as these fees will make it impossible to compete with regular radio broadcasts.

Sure there's lots of parents who don't act like this (mine are a perfect example, I bought most of my own toys as a child with money I earned cutting neighbors lawns), but there are HUGE numbers that do. Look to how succesful commercialization has become. Stick the words Harry Potter on any peice of crap and stores won't be able to keep them on the shelves.

I think you are dead wrong. Parents buy their kids expensive things all the time just to occupy them. PS2, Gamecube, X-Box, computers, Gameboy, Bikes, TVs, VCRs, etc etc etc etc... This isn't even the extent of it, every Christmas parents nearly beat each other trying to get the newest, stupidest fad so that their kids will love them. Parents would pay for this without even blinking.

The web is content, unlike power, water, or gas, the content varies.

True, but with an ISP you aren't paying for the -content-, but simply paying for the connection -to- the content. In essence, you are paying for the wires and electricity required to get the information from wherever it is to wherever you are. Short of interruptions in service, this will remain unchanged. If you want to spend time looking at cheap pr0n, or reading about oppressed peoples in Saskatoon, either content will cost the ISP the -exact same amount- in wire and electricity.

    Nope, that's assault brutha!

Actually, threatening to bring a lawsuit would be closer to threatening to ask everyone around whether or not someone should beat you with a stick. In theory, there is no consequence to being served with a lawsuit. In practice, it is very costly in terms of money and time, but the law doesn't and can't account for that except for in cases of abuse of the system, where the plaintiff is SO blatantly wrong that the judge can award damages to the defendant.

I just graduated this past May, and I can definately identify with these feelings. I was there at the end of last year.

What turned it back around for me was taking a class that had NOTHING to do with graduation requirements. In fact, it only went towards general credit, not even core curriculum credit. For me, it was intereactive computer graphics that reminded me what fun it is to play with computers.

Just trying to keep up with changing classes and getting into full classes and taking STUPID required courses (thank you, but I don't _need_ to take an entire course on html) was what was grinding on me. If that is how you are feeling I suggest you try what I did. Just find any old course that looks like fun. Or even a project, there were some cool robotics projects that were always looking for people. Or talk to a favorite professor and try and set up an independant study, or work on research. If however, you just are tired of computers in general, then get out now. You still have time to get some other degree.
