  1. 25% is Bulls**t on Arizona Governor Proposes Flab Tax · · Score: 1

"According to the latest CDC statistics, from 2009, 25.5% of Arizonans are obese, about 1.7 million people."

That figure of 25% is also the national average. The problem is that the Federal government's definition of "obese" is a complete joke. Further, obesity is a measure of weight, not health. The 2 are often conflated and treated like they're exactly one and the same. They're not.

  2. The Andromeda Strain on Journey To the Mantle of the Earth By 2020 · · Score: 1

I can't believe no one mentioned The Andromeda Strain! It's one of my favorite books. It was about a pre-historic bacteria that was thrown up high into the Earth's orbit as life was just beginning to evolve. As such, no life on Earth had ever had contact with it and therefore there was no immunity. Then one day a space test brings a sample down to Earth and it instantly wipes out the whole town. Now imagine the same thing happening, but the bacteria comes not from the outer atmosphere, but from deep in our mantle. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Andromeda_Strain

"a poll by USA Today indicates most Americans support the US law that begins phasing out traditional light bulbs next year."

And most Americans are fucking retards. This isn't about which bulb is better. It's about whether you should have the choice to decide that for yourself.

Yeah, how dare a technology come around that commoditizes our business! *shakes fist at the moon*

You're in the same league as graphic designers bitching about 99Designs. How about other now-commodity stuff like ODBC drivers? There used to be entire companies around that one piece of tech. Now it's something we expect to just work as a matter of fact.

If that means the bar is lower for web development, then so be it. Yes, more morons will get into the game. But so will competent people who otherwise may not have. In the end, it makes web development more affordable and within reach of more people. If that's not a win, I don't know what is.

You have no clue what happend with the original company as it was founded. Criminals were using Paypal to launder money. As a result, the Feds started putting serious pressure on the company "or else". It was either that or close up shop so they had to play ball. I admire what they tried to do. We need competing currencies and ways to exchange money without the Feds knowing about it. There's no way the IRS would ever let that happen.

Your first point is bull. Have you ever been out hiking? In cases where the trail is too far from civilization and the local authority doesn't have the resources, then you won't find nicely written signs at every turn. Its in those cases that available, natural materials are formed in an unnatural way to convey a message. For example it can be a line of rocks and sticks forming an obviously manmade line indicating the side of a trail. If where a trail splits and one split is a dead end, there could be large rocks formed perpendicular to the trail to indicate you shouldn't go that way. And so on and so on. It's called the wilderness for a reason. They can't put up nice signs and markers everywhere or it'd be just another suburban park.

The FBI did a study a few years ago about serial killers. Turns out the majority of them were truckers. The constant travel made it safer for them to commit their crimes. All kidding aside, you nailed it. I try to talk to locals before heading into a less populated area. Failing that, talking to people that have made the trek themselves has made me re-write even the most researched travel plans. As someone who loves to drive and motorcycle through unpopulated parts of America, this has helped me a lot.

The concept of asset protection is lost on 99% of people I talk to. They always think if you're hiding something, you've clearly done something wrong. The /. crowd should be above that, but sadly, many forget that principle.

What I have is a lawyer service on a sort of retainer. It's kind of like insurance. I pay a fee each month. It's about $40. And then if I ever need a defense attorney I give them a call and I'm covered for a whole number of hours more than I'd otherwise afford. It's a perfect service for any responsible adult. If you balance your checkbook, keep all your legal documents in order (car title, home deed, etc.) then this is just another way to cover your bases. And the more wealth you have, the more important it is to protect it.
