  3. on a serious note... on Space Burial · · Score: 5, Interesting

..I've always thought that space burials are one of the best ways we have a shot at 'meeting' alien races.

Yes, many of these coffin launches are going to get sucked up into solar gravity wells and burn up, but some are going to get caught in orbits around low-atmosphere bodies or other survivable situations.

My thinking behind this? the universe isnt *that* old compared to its predicted total lifespan; humankind may indeed be one of the 'first races'. By the time enough life-bearing planets produce that cycle, humanity may already be several hundred million years extinct. But putting our 'relics' (ie our corpses) out into the void, where they may survive fairly intact for far longer (assuming they have the sense to vacuum-pack our corpsicles) we stand a fair chance that something out in the distant future is going to find one of these human relics, and if they havent watched enough sci-fi, probably resurrect the human race from our DNA :-)

[seriously, blasting your corpse into space probably has more value to it than any current cyrogenics program, as far as the odds of you being resurrected go, the cost of maintenance,[hopefuly none] and value to the human race (lets face it, most of the people going into alcor drums we probably dont want back!)

Certainly, I'd like to do this, on the condition that the launch params were sufficient to give me a good shot at escaping the sol system limits and not returning to ground as space-trash on one of our neighboring planets.

  4. Speaking from experience.. on Getting Over the Stigma of a Previous Job? · · Score: 1

    I'll say this much.

I used to be lead infosecurity engineer for a similarly financially-marred midwestern Telecomm corp.

I have a CISSP and I'm working at 7-11 right now because all the work in the field here in Colorado is either gov subcontract and I need a security clearance (as as anon-ctizen thats not an option for me), and all the private sector work comes down to me explaining that previous employer and the (growing) amount of time since the last real tech job I had.

Its not just financial misdeeds of a previous employer that can do you in, its also that companies percieved technical ineptitude as well. Nobody really holds much against you for working for a company with corrupt accounting. However if you're a tech person who worked for a company that has a reputation for technical incompetance, thats something that they will guilt-by-associate you with, however unconsciously.

I opened my account recently after checking them out, liked them so much I xferred my $20 to the friend who tagged me onto them.

Ok, I was also a little sold by 'lowest cost Standard&Poors fund' and generally just the simplicity of funds investment with them (and when I signed up, they gave me some pretty generous credit)

havent moved much money through x.com as yet, but its almost frighteningly easy to use, so far i've liked everything I've seen, and yes, the cool name certainly didnt make me want to sign up any less!
