The US Department of Defense has bought an earlier version of the product for landmine testing and detonation (it's suitable as it can be used to generate and release a well-controlled quantity of electrical power).
Come on! What enemy is stupid enough to walk up to a landmine -- and then pump up the generator so that their legs will be blown off! This must have been George W. Bush's brainchild.
Well, at least photo.net is still around. This is Philip Greenspun's other venture.... a valuable resource for all things photography. Check it out.

Inspired stupidity. Think like the Airplane/early Naked Gun movies, where the gags are admittedly dumb, but dumb in such a creative, random way that there's a subversive intellectual quality underneath them.
Back in college, I would have agreed with you. I've heard this argument applied to anime, Monte Python, Simpsons, 3-stooges, Laurel and Hardy, and many other things.
Now though, I realize that there's no subversive intellect. It's just that smart people and dumb people both find the same slapstick humor funny. It doesn't make me smarter than somebody else if I see furter into a dumb joke than they do, because it's still a dumb joke. Just think about it for a second and I'm sure that you will agree.
Having a technical degree (especially in electrical engineering) opens up many oppurtunities.
Consider quantitative finance. I have a BS in Mathematics and a MS in Materials Engineering. Currently I work on Wall St along with many other engineers/physicists. We do more computer programming and mathematical modeling than any engineering job that I've held prior to this. One advantage is that Matlab/Unix/Linux is very prevalent in quantitative finance. The technical skills that you learn with an engineering background are very helpful in a field such as this.
Another place where an engineering degree helps is Law. I've heard that it is *very* easy to get into law school with an engineering degree. There's not enough technical attornies, but there is definetely a need for them, especially in patent law. I have a friend who was studying chemical engineering at my school as an undergrad. He went on to law school and is doing well as a patent attorny.
Although I can't speak about patent law, I do know that quantitative finance is very challenging and interesting. It involves more problem solving and analytical thinking than even the best engineering jobs that I've seen.

2. Company A legally learns/purchases/adapts technologies from rival product.
3. As a result, company A's product is improved.
This sounds fair to me. It even sounds *gasp* competitive.
The grammar nazi doesn't have any problems with it. If Microsoft adapted many of the good technologies from Apple, Linux, etc. then I would probably start using it more often.
Um... you are incorrect. It is not there Cellular network that hosts the data transfers. It is likely their digital network, prolly PCS network that you link up with. Cellular phones are way outdated. Most everything is digital in the US (except for extremly rural areas).
The grammar nazi isn't sure how that you can understand his grasp of History, but he can assure you that you used too many hyphens in your comment. It would have been more grammatically pure to use less hyphens. We must support grammatically purity at Slashdot.
We can not have the comment species tainted with the blood of inferior grammars.
Finally, the grammar nazi will have a place away from Slashdot to correct grammatical mistakes!!
The grammar nazi knew all along that he would provide an important role for the free software movement. He always thought that this role was improving the grammar of the Slashdot community, but alas... now he has a chance to show his stuff to the greater free software community. Maybe he will finally get the respect that he deserves.
My real last name (it's not 'nazi') is very similar to this. That's whay I asked. I'm sure that you know that its pronounced like 'Rushka'. Your ex has the correct spelling. Although it is Slavic, I'm unsure whether it's Polish, Russian, or Czech. All three are very similar.
Please allow the grammar nazi to offer some advice.
Leonid Showers Tonight. That is a sentence. Leonid (subject) showers (verb) tonight (preposition).
Technically, it 'showers' should be a noun and Leonid and adjective, but then it would be a sentence fragment. Grammatically it is correct, so I'm happy.
Youch!! You have a definite sugar problem. I wouldn't consider making a Slushee machine and Cotton candy machine (for breakfast??) until after you create yourself a 'electric toothbrush' from scratch. Creating a dentist and a waterjet for rotting teeth may also be neccessary!
Large corporate interests usually have only one interest: themselves.
Of course, they also are interested in legislation since they often times lack a modern-day business model. The RIAA is a cookie cutter example. I'd say that they petro industry is similar.
Best thing I ever did was at my Amiga game piracy club - there was a fervour waiting for Speedball 2 to come out. We modified a floppy disk with a melted chocolate mouse under the disk cover and scribbled 'speedball 2' on the front. Much amusement when some poor bastard put it into his computer. Even better, you should have seen the excitement on the poor bastard's face when he 'found' a copy of Speedball 2 on the floor. Swwweeeet. Jesus, children are evil!!
Perhaps, you meant

I don't remember the Behemoth from Magic the Gathering. Was it less powerful than the Leviation (10/10 Trample), but more powerful than the Juggernaut (5/3 First Attack)?
Please clue me in!
This Juggernaut will be unstoppable since it will orbit above the atmosphere, thus avoiding lightning bolts and their 3 points of damage.
Even though we can't read the article, there is really little for use Linux zealots to worry about. Here's why:
1. Microsoft's largest competition is from a 'free' (beer) product. Would you invest in a company that was competing with something that is free? Whether Linux is as good as Windows or not it a moot issue because Linux is free and Linux continues to get better.
2. Linux has no sole entity. Microsoft doesn't know how to effectively deal with Linux because it's not a company. It's a type of product that is beginning to gain significant market proliferation.
Basically, MS needs to either lock people into using its software before it's too late (XP is pissing people off) or it needs to constantly stay one step ahead of OSS (which is starting to get difficult).
What can they possibly do? I believe that better public relations would be a start. Now that Windows2000/XP is actually a nice operating system, they can focus on removing peoples ideas that software will constantly crash. Of course, at my work Excel 2000 on Windows 2000 still constantly crashes, but they have to fix that.

Please refrain from using "..." in such rapid succession. I'm not totally mad because you used "than" rather than "then" in the subject line.
They would never support that type of Tomfoolery that Microsoft is doing to make XP unstable.
Fault tolerance for the computers doesn't matter for the following reason:
If you look closely at the tires, you'll notice Firestone lettering. I think that computer-safety is of minimal concern.
You don't enquire you inquire.
Please be a little more careful since the Slashdot editors won't catch these mistakes.
The grammar nazi believes that poor grammar by an editor should be punishable by castration.
