You keep saying Apple is locking people in, but have they said anything to indicate they care about unlocking?
Apple is doing deals with networks to get a kickback from the data usage of iPhone users. Pulling this off requires that the users be locked in on special tariffs that are only for iPhone users. So yes, Apple do care about unlocking, as it breaks this revenue stream.
in Germany, pretty much all access points are secured. In the UK, pretty much only those owned by IT people.
Right now I can see 5 wireless networks, 2 secured with WPA, 3 with 104 bit WEP. In the evenings, I can often see up to 20 access points, all secure. Most of the non-technical users have APs labelled BTFusion-XXXX (WPA), BTHomeHub-XXXX (WEP) or SKYXXXXX (WPA), which come preconfigured with security on.
2. If you distribute the larger work as a single file, then you must grant
all recipients the rights set out in sections 2(A) & 2(B) for the entire
larger work. You must also provide recipients the source code to the
larger work along with a copy of this license.
So iso's are out then. Trust Microsoft to come up with something more viral than the GPL.
But if you don't click "I agree" to agree to the LGPL, no install.
When I complained to a developer once (I don't recall what, but I don't think it was GTK+), he responded that it was a standard part of the installer package he was using which he couldn't bypass.
I have that ticked, it works on the traditional interface, and now that I've posted that complaint it seems to be working on this discussion. But on other discussions I see things like:

So I'd assumed that it didn't apply to the new discussion system. Maybe what I'm seeing is a bug, but still, am I a "sucker" for not using an obviously buggy new comment system that is clearly marked as a test?
I just tried it again after finding it lacking a couple of months ago, and no, still no way to sort by score. So I guess I'll keep sucking the traditional interface for now.
Bear in mind that the, um, individual, behind this is a complete loony toon
It is somewhat ironic that he stole code from someone else's website to implement his "anti-theft" scripts that redirect non-ad-viewing users away from his websites.
The ocean currents stopping will not trigger global cooling. They will stop the transfer of heat from one place to another, leading to the cold end of the current becoming colder, and the hot end becoming hotter.
So when the police came for the alcoholic neighbor, he claimed that he didn't remember shooting the cat, and tried to pin it on Chrysler, Jack Daniels, and the homeless guy who washed his windscreen for a dime while he was waiting at the traffic lights two days earlier.
Does the telephone company get in trouble if you use their service to make prank calls?
Do the telephone company's advertisements prominently claim that your prank calls will go 100x faster through their new network than they do through the old one you've been using before now?
Actually, there is no reason they couldn't use Ogg/Theora/Dirac as a WMP plugin. The DRM is a wrapped around the file and independent from the codec used.
The DRM is independent of the codecs used, but it is tied to the file format. So they'd need to bundle the free Ogg+Theora/Dirac content into a proprietary ASF format file to be able to use the Microsoft DRM. And it still leaves Linux and Mac users high and dry.
Where's the hassle in driving down into the Cavendish Square multi-storey?
It's full, or at least was most weekdays before the congestion charge was introduced.

Toll booths create a stop and go traffic nightmare.
The other problem with toll booths is that they only really work when the toll is on a single road - bridges, motorways, entrances to airports etc, not on an area with multiple entrances like part of Manhattan, or central London or Singapore.
and some shops have seen catastrophic fall-off in business.
Which shops? I had to laugh at the protests from Oxford Street shopkeepers when the congestion charge was first introduced. The hassle of parking in the West End far outweighs any perceived inconvenience of using public transport.
20 years and some of the best priced hifi around was American-made Marantz stuff
20 years ago, Marantz stuff was Japanese-made. They haven't been American made since the 1960's, apart from a couple of valve amplifiers in the late 1990's.
I don't mind watching videos at work, but at 101 minutes long, and with all of slashdot hitting it right now... rebuffering 1%..., I don't think I'll be watching this one.
The US went from the United States to Britain to France and Africa up through just about everything else.
And so did Australia, New Zealand, Canada and a number of smaller countries that didn't have to worry about bombs falling on them back home, so could scatter their troops where they were needed.
These companies can sell you an 8 meg broadband connection, they'll sell it to 100 people and the line they're selling this on is an 80meg connection (example, not right numbers but right point)
I don't know about the US, but in the UK, the standard contention ratio for residential broadband is 50:1, so if you want the right numbers, its more like they sell it to 500 people. Even ADSL aimed at business is 20:1, for anything better you need to pay for a dedicated line.
So will Microsoft lobby Verisign to revoke ATI's certificate, and add the ATI driver to Windows Defender's malware list now that this hack to circumvent the DRM on HD video is out there in the wild?
IBM made most of their JVMs much harder to find, or even pulled them completely about a year ago. Now I think you can only get the AIX and OS/390 versions separately, for everything else you have to get WebSphere or something else with it bundled for that platform.

It was front page news in several UK papers over the weekend.

You seem to be making a case here for paying by the megabyte. Do you really want that?

So maybe all that money they paid Novell was actually for real IP, they weren't just buying FUD.

How can they have those features when Apple holds patents over them? Oh wait...
