Innovations aside, here's what scares me the most:
Variables in C# are automatically initialized by the environment.
Uh...does this mean they have a little paper clip drop down and say "Looks like you forgot to initialize your variable...don't worry..I'll assign it to..uh...27"
Amen to that my brother, you're not far from the truth my brother.
I'm so fed up with these moronic lawsuits I could spit. What the hell is wrong with the world today?? Hey AOL customers...
NOBODY IS FORCING YOU TO USE AOL
Jesus H Christ on a city bus, if you have a problem with AOL then TERMINATE YOUR FUCKING ACCOUNT Be an adult for Pete's sake, take responsibility for your own actions. That's the way it works...if enough people terminate then AOL has to look at making some changes. If AOL lost 30% of it's customers because they don't like all the pop-up ads I bet they would do something about it. It's just common sense. But nooooo we need to band together and sue...yeah great.
Well...I'd say your probably correct for now but that doesn't change the fact that you posted this in the wrong friggin section. This is the Salon article section, not the MS.net section. That's okay though, your a human and you are allowed to make mistakes. So you clicked the wrong link...hey.. it could've happened to any of us. It's all part of the game.
But hey.. wrong topic and all you are making some pretty good sense. I just love it when markting people get into a pissing contest with their beloved buzzwords. It's pretty obvious this stuff is aimed at people who will never understand it anyways, thus they are pretty impressed by it. This is the majority by the way, so they achieved the result they deisred.
I think the problem here is that the reputation of MS preceeds itself. Most techies have something similar to the "battered wife" sysndrom. After having been abused for so long your first reaction to just about anything is that they ( MS in this case, evil husband in other case ) are just up to their old tricks again. Quite frankly you really can't blame them either.
The truth is that Sun is probably no better than MS and they have pretty much F***ed up WRT java.
My main problem here is that I associate Visual Basic with Microsoft's idea of innovating a program language...eeeeeewwwwwwwwwww.... gives me douche chills all over. Although I'm pretty sure tC pound can't be any worse.
he's posting as an AC because moderators punish negativity....They hose you if you are negative. Slashdot is turning into a giant "drink the koolaid" site
CAN I GET A GREAT BIG AMEN TO THAT MY BROTHER!!!
I think it's partly due to the fact that slashdot probably has many young readers. This is not a bad thing except it doesn't exactly bring a lot of open-minded deep thinkers. You are more likely to have lots of "linux(or windows or BSD or whatever) rulez and I'll mod you down if you imply otherwise" type of people.
I've noticed that the average moderator cannot distinguish between a post that filled with passion and emotion and flambait. Try to express a strong belief and you will get smacked down, unless it's LINUX RULZ"
So what to do??? Well you can do what I did and dump your normal account, get some stupid nick, and join in with the morons.
Oh... by the way...Linux Rules, the GPL rocks, Perl and Python and PHP are all great, I love open source...etc.
Oh boy.. looks like ye ol slashdot has inflicted pain upon another server. Total meltdown..
Oh well, I can still comment on the article anyways.
I really like some of the things ESR says about the GPL and how it benfits the world. But then agin Lessig seems to make some terrific points about general economics and what drives the economy. I think that overall ESR stands above Lessig though, but they both do have some valid points.
While not reading the article I couldn't help but think how much ESR really "gets it" and how this helps others to "get it" too. Another thing that stood out while not reading the article was how bright Lessig is, he seems to "get it" also.
In conclusion I would say that this was one of the better articles that I have not read.
Well that's all fine and dandy... but I really have a hard time understanding why I would want to do this. I like mp3's for background music on my PC while I'm doing something else. They are great for that. If I want to listen to music on my stereo I want a real CD, I don't want 3/4 sound quality on my stereo, I want to hear those highs and feel those lows.
I have heard some mp3's that sound pretty good, but I have yet to hear anything that would take the place of the real thing on a CD.
You're correct that the price is partly related to the cost of the LCD screen, but it's also simply that the manufacturers want to keep the prices up. We need someone to have the gonads to come out with a low price functional laptop. Then you'll see those prices coming down. It's kinda like what happened to mointors. Even while everything else was dropping in price, desktops, printers, etc.. monitors stayed up there, until recently that is. Now you can get a decent 17 inch monitor for a song and a dance.
I would love to have a laptop to dink around on but there is no way I can justify a couple G s for a toy. Buuuut... if we're talking about less than $1000 for a functional laptop then I'll be tempted.
Bingo!! I learned how to code on a VAX VMS back in the day. I had played around with little programs in Win 3.xx and Win 95 but hated it. It seemed confusing and I never really felt any passion for it. When I discovered Linux a few years ago it was like being in school again only better. (no exams to worry about:)
In the Windows environment it always felt like I was fighting everything, nothing seemed intuitive. With Linux it's just the oppisite. The *nix environment makes more sense to me, it simple and clean. The Windows environment goes to great lengths to hide things which just muddles it up. Also I'll take emacs over visual studio anyday. Now before anybody gets worked up over that let me state that it's a matter of preference for me, I'm not saying that it's better or easier for anybody else but it works for me. With Linux I feel like the only limitations are my abilty to think and be creative.
In conclusion I would have to say that for me it's just simply matter of personal preference, your milage may vary,
Hmmmm.... I like porn. I enjoy looking at buck nekkid woman. I think it's quite healty actually. In fact I like looking at porn on the Internet. It's much safer, I don't have to drive my car to a seedy section of town and risk getting attacked by some down-on-his-luck criminal type. I don't have to worry about what my neighbors would think if they saw me walking around with the latest copy of "Lesbian Midgets". Yep... there ya go pally, I like porn and I like porn on the internet. In fact you should thank the porn industry because porn is driving the internet, just like it did with VCR's way back when. Yep, why do you think people bought those things????
So... if you're concerned about your children seeing porn then you should be a responsible parent and spend time with you're kids while they're on the net. Just like you do when they watch TV. You are a responsible parent aren't you???
And...yes...at some point in time your child is going to see a naked breast. Well listen up sparky, that was going to happen anyways so deal with it.

It always slays me when some uber-cuhl geek goes around spouting the virtues of his uber-cuhl language of choice. Then you come to find out later that uber-geek was simply jumping on the bandwagon for this years flavor simply because of all the hype. "Uh... if I read about it on ZDnet it has to be true...right?????"
Here's where software projects go when they die...
Yep.. some of these are dead for a reason. If you do a quick look around freshmeat you will see many other projects which are doomed for death. There are many very specific itch's being scratched.. uh like..
BWtoRW: The new program to convert blue widgets to red widgets..
uh..okay... cuhl.. uh maybe a dozen people will find that handy for a week or so. On any single day the signal to noise ratio on freshmeat can be pretty bad.
Hmmm.. I tried to install (actually upgrade from1.04) the rpm for 1.1.22-1 and I get this error "libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.2) is needed by gimp-1.22-1" which I don't quite get because when I do a locate libc.so.6 it shows up in/lib. I'm not sure what the GLIBC_2.2 indicates.
Do I need to update my c libraries for this to install?

For the sweeet love of God man whatever are you talking about. lessig == smart most certainly will compile if your using a REAL language.
If Lessig eauals smart then the expression evalueates to TRUE, otherwise it evaluates to FALSE.
