IE 7 is very small and all the grandma's and the golden +50 age crowd need to be upgraded with Windows Update. They are the ones who run these old browsers and hate anything new.

IE 9 is where Firefox and Chrome were in 2010. It is not 4 years behind at all. IE 9 was made in 2009-2010 so that makes sense. Ms does not update its rendering engine every 6 weeks and I bet those who gripe about that whine about Firefox being auto updated all the time. Well which is it?

IE is on an annual release and IE 10 is about done and scored 364 on html5test.com. It is at the same level of where current Firefox and Chrome is and yes, it will go behind until next summer when IE 11 is released but that is not a bad thing.

Hate IE all you want but it is not going away. It is the only browser appropriate for work as evident but the few who have FF still using FF 3.6 because of the way it autoupdates and the fact nothing has GPO, .MSI, or active directory support.

Nevermind the fact that CSS was new and alien in 2001. The box model finalized by the W3C came out after MS included what it thought would be the box model already in IE 5.5 and 6.

IE 6 has limited CSS but it differs because standards were not standards yet and kept chaning in 1999 - 2001 when IE 6 was in development. MS is not evil per say, just that IE 6 is from a different era in internet history and should not be used anymore. ... after IE 6 was done then yes MS was evil and stupid and opened the door to Firefox. IE 9 is the fastest browser for graphics and FF just recently added acceleration and you have to enable it inside Chrome. Some things like font rendering and SVG graphics acceleration are still behind in non-IE browsers.

IE is not longer a piece of shit.

But sadly the grandparent does need a copy of VirtualBox or VMWare around to test his browsers. Big deal even if you did use Windows fulltime. I am working on a corporate oriented network project. My code needs to work with IE 9 and FF and Chrome ... as well as old corporate locked down IE 7,8, Safari, and FF 3.6. I have a VM to do this which is annoying but a fact. XP wont go away until 2014, and even then I am sure millions of locked down FF 3.6 with its +40 exploits unpatched and IE 8 will still be around for at least 2020 when Windows 7 is retired. You can't leave these users out.

Perhaps charging more for older IE user is not a bad idea. For a startup or sole proprietorship why should I spend time for free? Time is money and if I have to hire someone who knows 10 year old workarounds then the customer should pay for it. If he/she doesn't then tell the sysadmin to get off his ass and use an up to date browser.

Where is the 3d effects and graphics that should be out by 2012? I do not see anything special. ... in a more serious note in regards to yoru comment that people just hate change and whine no matter I have something to add.

This is different. I was one of those who hated the Fisher Price look of XP. However, I did upgrade fast over W2k and just changed to the classic look during the XP era. Vista truly was butt ugly. My solution was to use XP for a little bit and then use Vista Glazz and just end up putting up with the UI after Windows Update and service packs kept ruining Vista Glazz.

Windows 7 was no service pack and was great looking, ran great, and had many improvements with the taskbar, browser tabs in IE are on the taskbar, jumplists, and Aero's ram usage was halfed, not to mention its system restore worked flawless and NT's old paging algorithm was replaced with the one Linux and MacOSX use so it wont swap like mad even if you have ram available.

Now the XP loyalists hated change because we told them too when Vista came out. It became a learned behavior to idolize and think XP was not the best thing ever and that IE 6 was the true internet browser at work. I agree this is silly but a good 1/3 of the PC users fit in the XP mold because of what happened iwth Vista so why risk it? They do not hate Windows 7. Just do not want to deal with it and see little justification for the expensive and time involved.

There is a big difference this time.

Windows 8 is terrible in almost every way. XP offered great improvements over the DOS based Win 9.x, Windows 7/Vista was much more secure, and Win 7 supports modern hardware much better, but what does Windows 8 have?

What does Windows 8 take away? A LOT. You can't be as effective, MS gets rid of the eye candy and features like Aero peak that I use every single day. Metro apps are terribly under developed and underpowered. Just look at IE 10 and the Hotmail Metro apps? No cut and paste, no tabs, the hotmail one has 3 functions and it just hotmail.com in a fullscreen IE Window maximized! Why would I want to pay $1200 for a new computer so I can have the functionality of your Amiga??

It is a step back and yes it is not about us who fear change. It is about a paid upgrade to make our productivity and our machines inferior from what we have.

The default background was really horrible like a C grade art student hacked it together a night before his project was due. I ran some hacks like VistaGlazz which gave a semi Windows 7 look but Windows Updates kept fucking it up.

Windows 7 is done right with more lighter colors with darker contrasts and backgrounds. Aero is not bad per say, but MS lacks vision with implementation. Windows 7 made it less dark and threatening. They typically release bad products then improve before they are successful. NT, Windows, Windows CE, IE, Office, and others are classic examples. No one used them when they first came out and MS made so much money from DOS they could afford to do this for awhile.

Now they can't as their staple monopoly of operating systems is being adversely affected if they make a mistake.

Metro is an interesting idea with a terrible implementation. Vista it was the same thing. Just get it out the door! Corporate America and 40% of users said, let me stay with XP for 10 years. No one was expecting that and the result was MS lost money as over half never left XP anyway. Windows 8 has this too but it is hidden and obstructs the whole screen which is annoying. If I want to check Windows Update I hit the Windows Key and start (Metro shows up) and start typing Update and another screen pops up where is says apps ..0, below that settings ... 2, hit arrow key down to settings and then select Windows Update.

Once you finally leave XP instant sear will be a nice asset as it can find documents too and I do not need to use the mouse to navigate like I did under XP. What MS needs to do since there is no turning back on METRO now, is to document or show a search dialog on the right or left whenever someone hits the Windows Key so Grandma or secretary Nancy can see this and learn this feature fast as I have only seen 30% - 50% of Windows 7/Vista users using the instant search.

To a bean counter, anything that doesn't look like a bean doesn't exist.

And the #1 way to scare employees is to point out that, pro or no pro, there are plenty of people in a Third-World country who will be happy to do the work for a fraction of what you can afford to do it for. Having a horde of unemployed people closer to home looking for jobs doesn't help either.

What counts isn't "your price", it's "your worth". And you don't define worth, the employer does. The trend for the last 20-30 years has been to devaluate the worth of line-level employees while simultaeously inflating the worth of the top-tier executives.

More to the point I have seen employers look at the volume of resumes coming in when the recession started and immediately started to cut benefits and everyone's pay even though they were making profits. Why? If 100 people apply to each job who are willing to work for less than why am I paying Bob x? The owners bought new cars and the employees had to fight to keep their houses after paycuts totaling 15 - 20% plus they still have not received a raise all these years later. OUCH.
