People commute 2 years each way for their minimum wage jobs there, but those are not far and few. Most make several million betting on shares and flipping apartments. Has not crashed yet including 2008 even!
You just commute and work a 2nd job to buy the gas to get to your 1st. Poor people have it the roughest in cities like this and also even companies like Walmart and McDonalds pay $10/hr instead of $7.50/hr elsewhere to make up for that. Like the $2.50 makes so much of a difference but still it is supply and demand. Obvious farmhands and latte makers have less demand than marking and sales professionals in a big city so likewise the cities expect people to be all upper class because that is their job.
If you graduated in 2000 you will be rich just by showing up to work if you have a degree. Post 2008 ? HA, customers need those lattes time to get off slashdot
When I lived in Anchorage Alaska I had a roomate who was doing just that. We both paid about $750 a month for a room in a basement. He was just a dental assistant but saved $90,000 and planned to buy 3 homes with 25% down for all 3.
He planned on making 1 million in 30 years renting and flipping all 3 homes. Damn lucky bastard. He showed me the housing crash in Boise and these homes were 1/3 the price they were in 2006.
No huge budget deficit, ultra conservative politicians, low cost of living, low taxes, low regulation, educated workforce, etc.
If my idea turns into a.com startup I am going there. I can't afford a $700,000 studio apartment for myself, let alone my workers which I can't pay much yet. Last time I looked you could get studio condo in Austin for $90,000. Taxes are lower and I do not have to give out health benefits to my employees.
I know the last line sounded greedy, but when you only have $200,000 in capital you can't waste it. Shoot even if you hire someone for $35,000 a year you spend $30,000 in health benefits! California requires anyone working more than 19 hours a week health insurance. That is just too much money.
Also I do not feel bad paying people $35,000 a year as a college student in UT @ Austin will be thrilled and can make a decent living and not move back in with Mom and Dad for that price.
Seriously California is so business unfriendly I just do not see any point at all doing business there unless you already setup shop years ago.
Windows 7 SP 1 runs with secureBoot and EFI fine. Also every single EFI implementation has an option to disable it since XP is still heavily used and will be used for many years just like OS/2 options are still in many bioses today.
You can easily disable it and considering the BIOS still has OS/2 and Vesa options I highly doubt any manufactorer would do this. Remember Windows XP does not support EFI nor secureBoot and would make many users and corporations who are cheap skates upset.
Windows 7 supports SecureBoot as well if you really hate Windows 8 so much. This is fud
If you're ok as a game developer making 3d realistic graphics on crappy intel gma 915 mobile graphics with 3% of the power of a real GPU with a console, and no dedicated ram.
Seriously Intel killed the gaming market for the pc. I saw a statistic here several years ago that showed 70% of the pcs sold come with these graphics so horrible not even Aero can run properly. The same games all look fluid and awesome on the console and kids laugh at PCs because they are so slow, crappy, and over priced.
Go ahead and try to write a game for only those with cool graphics. Guess what? BestBuy wont carry it because 70% of the users will say it runs like crap and return and then the retailer will refuse to carry your product.
WIth these 2 problems it is easier just to write it for a console. Sadly, the PC is going this route too as Windows 8 approaches as stores, subscriptions, wireless plans, and renting become the new norm.
This is for the Xbox 360 and Windows Mobile devices. Let me know when Commodo Dragon or Chrome works on these?
I am not saying its the best browser in the world, cures cancer, lets web developers write an ajax site in one line of code (unless they know perl;-), or anything.
Is it usable for the living room or the phone? Absolutely, and it is the only somewhat modern browser and can do an ok job compared to the competition.
Opera for the Wii is very very old and certainly wouldn't work well on modern sites. Netfront is netfront and is not even html 5 compatible and made for dumb phones from years ago. Even Andriod which uses webkit is crap as a mobile browser. Sure it supports html 5 tags, but its javascript is Netscape/IE 6 era interpreted and crashes my phone several times a day and freezes it up. IE 9, like FF, and Chromium has JIT javascript optimizations. Sure it's javascript is the slowest but 1/2 the speed of Chrome is better than 1/10th the speed. Can you run Google Maps with satellite view with the other other browsers? Hell no.
A lot changes in 10 years just as WinME is not the same as Win 7. I am not an IE fanboy, but I do wish IE users at corporations would upgrade to it to make web masters lives easier. As long as it is viewed as all versions suck there will be apathy to upgrade as what would be the point? I have no problem using it on a phone or from the big TV set. Also, after IE 6 MS separated the dlls for Windows and IE for security. Running it on a console makes it more secure as well.
I do find the comment above sucks way less as a replacement for good amusing, but sad. That is Windows my friend and how it beat OS/2. Windows 95 sucked so much less and people drooled.
IE 10 will be interesting when it comes out even though IE gets such a well deserved bad rap here. This one will be competitive to FF and Chromium browsers, but that is for the desktop.
The problem is the laws define a pedo with just having the material.
For example, if I uploaded kiddie porn to your computer you are a criminal for having it. Sure the penalty is much less than being a kiddie porn manufacturer which is someone who sends it but you are not guilty.
Worse, try to get a job again? Your future is ruined forever, because of an asshat and many will pay to make the problem go away! This is truly evil in the nth degree whether you feel this current laws are silly are not.
No respectable employer will hire anyone and yes if someone plants porn your life is gone whether you had anything to do with it or not. I can see people willing to pay believe or not sadly for these reasons.
I was given a task to develop a website for a Network Users Group and thought it would be a simple project with Kompozer and some HTML like I did in the Netscape 4.x days. Boy was I in for a surprise.
CSS is the new thing now in this century. Worse, the code I used from the internet that I modified worked in all browsers but Internet Explorer. IE 6 from what I researched was on crack when it came to CSS!
I am developing a site.... errr plan to start one. I had to go to a Barnes & Noble and get a few books on CSS and HTML 4 + Css 2.1 with IE hacks and tips. I have been using the books and let me tell you that it is increasingly complex task that web designers do not get fully appreciated for their efforts. Most of the PHBs such as myself figured any teenager could make a website so it wasn't worth to pay anything etc.
Php I plan to tackle a little more next night because it is superior, but because I do not have to fuss with it to get shit done like I would in Java. When I earn money then I can hire someone to remove the bad code and fix that later etc.
Because it takes 3x the effort and 4x the amount of code with its silly patterns to get anything done. Php is like the VB. Its great to get things done quick if you do not need Enterprise Application Support with its own framework not to mention not all ISPs even support it all.
A 100% interpreted language like python or ruby? Php with Apache DSO runs inside the web server engine that is written in C++. The other languages run in CGI interpreted. THough, Zend is coming out but I do not know if web hosting companies support it yet through CPanel?
Php's strength is you can get something done with 1/8th the code size and in 1/4th the time than in Java. It is a rich not overly engineered langauged.
FORGET java, forget everything you know about JAVA development. Go with PHP, and CodeIgniter or similar framework which does not force you to their patterns (ZFW used to be like this...)
and keep it simple - keep everything as simple as possible.
And "PHP Templating" is *NOT* templating, it is spaghetti some ate yesterday and came up today.
I second that.
Java is really nice to have a 1 million line code complex business intelligence CRM and enterrpise app that takes a year to develop and is scalable with real engineering and architecture. But for a simple website? Come on!
Php has got a really bad wrap like its the Visual Basic of web development. But basic has its purpose for simple client server apps that need to be made quickly with up to medium complexity. Php with the right framework is great in that a good week you can have something ready that would take a month in Java.
Also what about liability? Will your ISP carrier it forever? How do you know Oracle wont sue for copyright violation for not buying an ORacle RDMS license? Their lawyers have proven to take this extreme view of copyright as a symbol with the same name in the same structure sequence identical to actual copyright infringement. I do not agree with that view and neither did the judge but I do not trust Oracle and this guy can not afford to defend himself.
Php is run inside the natively compiled web server software engine so it is faster than interpreted languages, though not as fast as.NET and Java.
It is a shame because I learned real object oriented programing with Java. It is amazing what mismanagement of an asset can do to a language.
The probem is always management. It is taught in business school. They tell the other guys what to do and set the budget.
In a large office with 3,000 users a few IT support guys are rushing around constantly and do not have the time to update and do testing. The budget is never set high enough to do it as they are viewed as cost sink or cost center by the finance department. The bean counters are much to blame as do the management for not selling themselves better about the hidden costs not shown in Excel by the CPAs in board meetings on why you need IT.
I can tell you that when I rewipe my computer with a fresh Win 7 image there are over 120 security updates and half are.NET. Hours later there are more security updates with the.NET platform. I do not think it is secure as you think.
Ask any MBA or beancounter. THey will gladly tell you that IT is a cost center that adds no value so there is no costs at all associated running IE 6 with no security updates after June 7th 2009, on a Tuesday that wont work with intraCrap from MegaCorp.
It is not like any financially sensitive information is ever used on computers anyway and since it is a dollar sink there is nothing wrong with using that and switching to typewritters since after all they are just a cost.... (... end sarcasm) My rant above is a serious issue. Especially for hospitals for HIPA requirements that still use IE 6 and unsupported who no updates, XP SP 2. The bean counters tell doctors what medical appropriate procedures to run too and not just how to handle IT and it drives me crazy when I contract work for them.
The worst offenders are not that McCrappy or Symantic endpoint, but software that is 100 security updates behind! Can't get more updates because the intranet app developers are lazy and do not want to support it, or are evil and do this on purpose so your employer can buy version B for $150,000 so they can run updates again or join the rest of the world and join Windows 7.
A patched Windows 7 office with IE 9, up to date updates and no flash or outdated java running in the internet zone, is like 300% more secure. The calls for malware go down drastically. The problem is always the MBAs and the obsession over the share price going up.
Corporations rarely upgrade the browser that comes with the OS. IT departments are understaffed and do not have time to test browsers.
If they adopt Win 7 then it means they will lock IE 8 with no modern standard support until 2020. That sucks goatballs, but its a demographic I can't ignore and I wonder how I can make it look modern CSS 3 like.
Here is the catch. Billy and Balmer own 60% of the company. The board has tried to fire him twice and Balmer refuses to step down and there is nothing they can do.
Gates is too busy saving the world to care and I wonder how much stock his foundation and himself has? Gates was evil and I hated his guts when he ran MS but he was a damn good CEO. Windows was shit and he shit it out as a gold brick and monopolized the market. From what I read, Balmer was so indecisive about MS's mobile strategy that Gates make the decision for Metro. But he did not oversee it. He stated the obvious that the only reason to use a Windows mobile device was integration with Office. Balmer let the office development team make an IOS version of Office which cost them that. BIG MISTAKE. Now fortunte 500 companies do not see why they need to leave IOS for the executive phones. Wow
Hold on to your hat! The next year or two will be interesting. MS is likely to lose their crown jewels over this and as much as a cash cow PCs are, they are dwindling. As the cost goes down and consumers leave them for tablets they are less willing to pay for software as the overall cost of the unit. I think an integration of the tablet and PC is coming. What platform will they run? No one likes Windows anymore and just use it for the software.
Wouldn't it be ironic after 2019 when Windows 7 support ends, that everyone starts switching to macs? Businesses start using VM and citrix for their old apps (probably still requiring IE 6). Actually the thought is lubricious just a year ago but I am getting serious. Windows will lose if not already its strangle hold on consumers and the only reason business users use MS is because everyone else uses MS. Of course their mcCrappy AV, and other business apps are needed but with clouds and VM and Citrix you no longer have to be stuck on win32.
I tried the preview again. It is improved, but MS missed the point. Why do I want something so crippled that I can not even use tabs on IE? My touchpad still can't do cell phone UI gestures like zooming in and out. But why?
People are not jumping up and down for removing features and running one app at a time and single tasking on the job. It is just a fact of a limitation of a 4 inch cell phone screen that people can't. Not because people are demanding it.
Nothing is logial about it unlike Windows 95 where all tasks were under Start. Menu's were added by Apple for a reason. CPM and DOS required people to already know all the commands and a menu puts them there for someone to select. That 1984 ease of use is gone under METRO. MS is hiding things and not because people want it.
I just can't see how you can have 12 tabs open, 3 photoshop images, some php tools, Outlook, and Word open while you cut and paste from all of them and get a workflow going with Metro. Even the improved hot corners can only show one program at a time with peak. That is impractical compared to aero peak under Windows 7 in my case. What a shame since Windows 8 has a nice kernel and features. Too bad Gates and Balmer own 60% of the share of their company. Balmer needed to be fired a long time ago.
I do not see developers rushing to make Metro apps like they did with IOS and then Andriod.
Maybe I am wrong here, but there is a consensus that no one cares and it will flop. I just do not see a demand for it. I am surprised there is no Andriod applet viewer yet since it is based on Java for Windows yet. That would rock
Vista had a terrible color scheme. I tried VistaGlaze and it messed up my laptop when Vista SP 1 came out. The colors and the dark borders and Office 2007 just were dark, out of contrast and hideous right there with the fisher price theme in XP. I take it you have never visited Manhatten.

I doubt this. Hell bios versions as late as 2009 still had VESA and pallete snooping for OS/2. I was surprised.
Many XP users are still out there and iwll continue to be out there in the enterprise well past 2014 sadly.
