I dont like to steal music as I feel for $.99 that I should contribute to the artist at an affordable price.
My Ipod is locked up because I upgraded Itunes and accidently created another user account. Worse I have 2 installations of w2k on my desktop, one for work and one for games. Now I have a WindowsXP laptop that I would like to store some music.
The last time I tried to change the user I ended up losing all my music and Itunes deleted everything. Apple was nice and let me redownload everything with a warning not to do it again. Anyway if I didn't have work/school I could research everything and fix it and be carefull to get my music back so I dont lose anything. Yes I know Itunes lets you share music on up to 5 computers but still I have to do it right incase I accidently delete the drm for the music.
If Microsoft offers more leniant DRM then I am all for it! Yes I dislike microsoft but if they make better products and my life easier than I will buy their products. Itunes is a royal pain in the ass but all the labels want DRM or they wont sell you the music.
Flash is improving with the problems of limited write cycles. WIth algorithms used for raid and disks I am sure you can make them fault tollerant too as the sectors begin to die off. I too have drives from 2000 that still work and it will be a shame to see them die sooner.
Hybrid drives are the next big thing and Samsung announced the first last month here on slashdot with 256 megs of flash for portables. Microsoft is implementing a standard for them for Vista. Hibernation will go real quickly as well as access to small files. It would be sweet to put / in the flash for quick access in unix systems.
I wish flash would take over but my guess is it will come gradually with hybrids.
I was going to recommend 3ware as well. I have done any administration work in years but one of my former employers use them for their servers for that reason. If it dies you can replace the board and we even have a few stored in case of a failure.
Organizations should look into this and not the vendor for their server for any raid setup. It would be nice if they all did as a server is not a desktop and the data is needed NOW when it goes down.
It happens with other hardware based non intel based boards as well. IBM raidserve as an example
Another poster mentioned that it could be DMA related or the way the new speculative branch prediction algorithms work. Perhaps a race condition exists that rarely happens with earlier chips but is executed with the newer ones often which would slow it down.
Which is why I am a fan of opensourcing java because its stagnating.
You listed alternatives but many bussinesses dont trust free software or consider such projects proprietary if they dont come from Sun. Sco did alot of damage to the mindset of phb's on one of my former employers. I know sun came up witht he JCP community process which have made nice tools llike the beanshell part of the next java.
JSp is what most bussinesses still use and where the jobs are out. No wonder MIS grads are looking at ASP.NET with c# for quicker development time.
I looked at the GWT and it seems to be geared towards presentation logic and I would like something more geared toward application logic that is free.
JSP needs to either improve and java needs to come with better tools or.NET will start to take over soon. I looked at the pet shop demo from Microsoft and its 1/4th the code and 2x as fast as the java equilivant that doesn't use JSP.
Believe it or not I have never owed anything with a credit card. I dont trust them and I was raised to be financial responsible. Even if that meant to be broke.
I hear sweet deals of low interest rates of %9.9 and then the credit card company charges up to %28 if you MISS JUST ONE PAYMENT. Do the credit card companies want me to pay it off within a month? Of course this is an unrealistic option. Will they charge me compounding interest where they charge interest and then the next month they charge the cost of the item and interest and then add interest again to the new total? I dont want to be paying interest on the interest owed as I would go into massive debt. I can imagine they would love to do this as people would be forced to pay them more money.
Are the terms of the agreement interest only, meaning if I pay off some of the debt will they only cover teh interest portion? The credit card companies are sharks and I do not understand all of the terms in the contract.
Last, I am more worried about my credit score. I dont have bad credit but rather I want to only put down $20 a month for small items on it and pay it monthly. I want to buy a home within a year or two. My score is the key.
So yes Best Buy is offering a high interest 14.4% loan which back 20 years ago would be considered outrageously bad but its a conservative option.
I wanted one but Apple refused to finance me one because I was a college student. I got a compaq pressario v4000 for $740 because it was opened and discontinued and it runs faster and cooler than my gf's $1400 vio that is always overheating. With loans and money down I only pay $20 for my laptop. Not bad
.. in seriousness, how much was the shipping and handling?
Dell is know to charge $200 for shipping and handling on a $399 computer worth $550 on the market. Dell pays Fedex $30 and pockets the change and the consumer thinks he got a good deal on the system.
I dont know if they still do this but for awhile it worked as everyone orded Dell's because they appeared cheaper.
Apple has no plans for financing that I am aware of.
Although that post was supposed to be humorous it is a problem.
My compaq v4000 notebook I got for $740 was financed with a high interest 14.4% APR loan. With these its about $35 but I had $300 cash from working and saving so it turned out to be affordable for college students. The best Apple could do was a 90 day loan. Uh sorry.
Apple loyalists claim their systems are like BMw's for the wealthy to make themselves feel supperior. Well it wont help spread the platform in the university market with options like that.
IF your refering the latest Ubuntu release you can configure the resoution in the gnome menu under administration. It just worked for me withotu issues with the latest one on my cheap wintel notebook.
Also if you hate sudu just sudo pssword and you now have a root account.
I didn't like Linux for years and used FreeBSD because of the percieved alpha quality Linux was heading to.
Ubuntu is hte only distro that is not a pain in the ass and just works! PS I have an intel centrino chipset notebook and Ubuntu started right up and everything was supported with no manual configuration. Including the intel wifi.
I think Badger is the name of the new version that came out last month. You may want to try the livecd to see if it works on your laptop.
Seriously, Borland tried to sue MS over this practice of luring all their good people away. Borland could not get anthing done as Microsoft's strategy was to send limo's and free lunches to Borland product managers and offer them lucrative positions at MS with cheap stock option signing bonuses. There products fell behind and Visual Studio took over.
Now the tides have turned.
I think this says alot about Microsoft as well. The people who are attracted to work at MS are hell bent on success and leading changes and being part of something successfull and new. Ms was king in the 90's and led the innovation and set the standards for computers and the future was bright and they were considered the wave of the future.
Today, Google is the new and innovative kid on the block and MS is stagnating. These same kind of people who like to make differences and be powerfull to satisfy their ego's see MS as the legacy company and google as the new innovative one. My, have times changed. This is bad news for Microsoft and morale at the company. They need to focus on something new besides upgrading windows and making yet game console.
So in the 90's MS hires your executives from YOU! Today Google hires MS executives.
Whats so fustrating was WordPerfect was veyr profitable and well supported under unix.
What Corel did was kill it with dumb technical mistakes and pouring money into a dead project will not fix it.
When WordPerfect was bought by Corel, Corel decided to kill the native unix port and emulate the windows port with wine. Wine sucked alot more back in 1999 than today and many c++ win32 code was written in C and emulated the language for the wine port. Worse I believe it ran win32 in emulation as no native api was part of wine at the time.
So the linux version sucked goatballs and they killed the solaris and irix versions of wordperfect. Linux kernel 2.0 was a desktop oriented at the time and barely supported more than 2 cpu's. Unix was still king and Corel totally ditched the customers.
It reminded me alot of os/2 software that was native to windows and backported. It sucked goatballs and only showed how great WIndows was. If it emulated windows and integrates well with it, then why can I just run it on the real thing?
It was a mess. Not to mention Microsoft would not sell WIndows to OEM's for cheap unless they bundled office at the time. They stopped doing this practice as everyone uses it but it hurt as for $100 more you can have MS Word and excell. So why buy WordPerfect?
Winforms is still not complete and Linus Torvalds recommends win32 users to use Windows instead of wine on Linux. Infact he used MS Office on windows exclusively at Transmeta and refused to touch wine.
Dont drink the koolaid. C# is an excellent language but I would not bet my job on a cross platform web site with it. For that I would use java or php. ASP.Net is a great Windows based solution and I have not seen one single application that is available for Windows and Unix written from teh same codebase in.NET. How many ASP.Net websites have you seen that use Mono on Linux?
Basides for a few utilites from Mono I would be very skeptical that this is more as a way to fool developers into writing for mono only to be trapped into win32 later. This happened with VMS as it supports a limited win32 api and many developers ended up going to NT.
Also Unix is open and documented and Windows and.NET is proprietary. Oh yeah its ISO compliant bla bla. But what about the libraries for APS.NET? Proprietary.
.... When has it been Google's responsbility to line Kinder's profit margins?
Whats next? Have me sue you because you are not making me money? Is google even costing them money at all? They had free advertising for awhile from a competitor of all places!
So by chance Kinder just happened to be highly rated in Google(a competitor I may add), and all of the sudden they are not advertised as much when tweaking some algorithm. Kinder cries boo hoo! Why should Google go out of their way to help a competitor?
What pisses me off is this site has nothing to lose and the more they are mentioned on slashdot and in the news, the nigher their page rank becomes and the more money they make. Right now I bet they are raking in ad money from slashdotters checking out their site. They have nothing to lose! And as a bonus they can give free negative publicity to Google in the process.
In Europe the losing side pays the winning side legal fee's. I wish we had this system in the States so frivelious lawsuits like this can't happen.
The phb's like integration and think going with an all MS solution can somehow save them money. Especially with a MS salesmen selling IIS and.NET.
So the geeks are usually told what to use and to do it. Also believe it or not an MS solution can be the appropriate one. It can integrate with access and w2k domain logins nice.
Not to start a flamewar but.NET was designed for vendor lockin as a solution to Microsoft's threat with Java Enterprise edition.
Mono is still alpha depending on which libraries you use. Does it even support winforms yet?.Net 2.0 is coming with VS.net 2005 and Mono has still not caught up with VS.net 2003.
C#.net is a great technology. Especially if your an MS shop that needs MS integration with win32 apps for your intranet servers.
But cross platform it is not and its a MS technology just like win32 is, though you can have limited success with wine.
Just use Windows. If the server is cracked its the ISP's problem. Not yours if you outsource the server.
Go lookup last week's (or 2 weeks ago news) under the spam section here on slashdot? Godaddy has done some unethical things with leaving their sendmail relay's open and then closing your account and hijacking your domain for punishment for spamming even though someone else spammed by using their open relay under your domain name. Sleezy and could be expensive for several days of downtime while your legal team faxes threatening documents until your domain name is released back.
Even if you own your domain name its still not a company I would want to do business with.
Which is why I am glad her contract was not renewed because she had to defend herself and go around her boss to do so.
Its not worth it and she is hopefully going to a better school district with no gang problem next fall. Teachers need authority and respect. I have been assulted on the job before when I was a tram driver for an amusement park. I pinned him down until security hauled his ass to jail. Did I get fired? No I was defending myself. Though he did try to get me fired and sue the park until the cops found he had a blood alchohol level 1.6 if I recall and witnesses said he knocked me ot the ground and threatened me when I told him to leave the park.
Too bad at %95 of the places out there the customer is always right and would not only fire me but probably press charges too even if I am defending myself to teach me a lesson for not being beaten up for 7/hr.
So while a teacher can not hit another student unless attacked he/she must take threats seriously and have an expulsion hearing. Its a shame what happened at Columbine but everyone is entitled to a safe workplace. This is true whether parent, teacher, student, worker, or customer.
People are used to being customers and have business bend over backwards to their every urge. Now they expect the same of the teachers. Perhaps the parents think they are customers or at least expect to be treated as such and get outraged when they do not make them happy.
I would assume if I were a parent that I prefer the kid to be teached a lesson at school if they are irresponsible and not be bowed down to and passed without doing anything. How does that teach them for life?
School should be treated as a workspace. In effect highschool is so strict with tardiness (or my school was) because our bosses do not want more than 3 or 4 in a 6 month period. After that excused or not it wont matter as our bosses would just get pissed.
I think parents should grow up and stop fucking suing schools into such an obilivian that they can not discipline or do their job because of the threat of armies of lawyers.

After all the teleco's have a vested interest to mod all VOIP calls to force you to get cell phones. Unless you pay them an extra fee of course.
