Yes, playing devils advocate here I think it does set a bad predicent for the child.
You need to be obedient to your boss, spouse, kids, and your responsibilites in life. It sucks but hey its life. IT starts with school and school teaches you to be up and being somewhere on time everyday and to do work related things at home. Its training for work as well as recieving a solid education. People are obediant to you as well in life so its what everyone does.
You dont make death threats and if it was about a boss (assuming he was an adult) and he/she found out about it, would the kid still be employed? I think not.
Still a suspension might be more appropriate off of school grounds. Teachers are threatened more time than you think and you should try to put yourself in their shoes? Its a bad job that they do out of reward for helping others succeed.
I wonder if the kid will grow up to be one of those litigatous bastards or blame someone else whenever something bad happens and never learns from his past mistakes.
"I'd even consider remanding the child to protective services as these parents are seriously a threat when they think this is find behaviour worthy of defending in court."
Back when I was in school (I am only 29) I remembered what happened if I screwed up in school and the teacher called my mother.
Boy, was I scared when dad came home and heard about it. I knew what was going to happen.
Today my gf is a school teacher and rarely if ever do the parents ever discipline the kid. Almost always in this day and age the parent will always standup for the kid and attack the teacher for letting it happen. No one believes in responsibility and everything is always someone elses fault. Its like a character flaw if its your own. I wonder if this is why America is so law suit friendly? Its always someone elses fault and its liek this because we raise our kids to think that.
My gf suspended 2 students for threatening her life. One was expelled and a gang leader and came into the school with a knife with the intention of stabbing her as a way to teach her a lesson by suspending her. Meanwhile she complained to her boss who did nothing and then to the principal who got hte kid out. Meanwhile she is now unemployeed for dare defending herself because it made her boss look bad by going around him. Sigh
I do not mean to sound like a dick but teachers get paid too little and put up with too much garbage to deal with trash. She had to get her masters and 2 certifications and $100,000 in debt just to have the priviledge of putting up with gang bangers and death threats for a mere $39,000 a year.
I do find this odd it happened outside of school grounds but still.
I view academia as not too different from the private sector. The private sector sponsors much of research and in return benefits from your work by bringing new products or ways to improve the way they are made.
You also have limited budgets and need results as well. Things like integration and lower support while increasing productivity is essential in the research domain as well. The difference is the market is alot more grueling and less tollerant to failure than the public or research sector.
Linux is heavily used serving web and database apps in the private sector and also many big corps have r&d labs doing research as well. But liability scares could hit your work environment as well. I suppose some MBA bean counters set the accounting and budget for your operations as well. So yes its serious that fud has got into the way and Darl McBride should not get away with this.
Corporations might not seem to give but they do bring products to the public and without the public would ceast to function. They are part of society. Helping them do their job cheaper by using good computer systems helps everyone and lowers prices and brings more jobs in.
Free software and computers should be for everyone. Not everyone should be forced to be extorted because some monopoly likes to fund litigation friendly companies to scare accountants and bean counters.
Whats the point of boasting about Linux pride if only a few hobbiests and Computer science students use it?
Shouldn't the growth continue to change the world and help everyone use IT to benefit everyone instead of MS?
I just mentioned in this thread about a previous employer who has now grown skeptical of linux as a result of SCO. We did use SCO man moons ago and found out we used Linux and tried to send us threatening letters and invoices which we paid. Its cheaper to pay than fight in court.
We had to audit and pay someone even more money for an audit and a price of legality analysis. This then was added to teh TCO of using linux vs using Windows. So now the MS salesmen has proof that Windows is cheaper. After all we dont have to look for legalities everytime we download debian!
They still use Linux for some limited applications but its expensive now according to the bean counters unless a Windows solution can be used.
On the contrary one of the companies I used to work for is analizing the benefits and potential liabilities of using Linux. In the meantime its Windows everywhere and a hold on Linux.
Yes, this has damaged Linux in the office and Microsoft is gleaming as they charge us throught he roof.
FYI, the cost of the audit in the accounting spreadsheets is added to teh TCO of using Linux which makes MS look cheaper. After all we will have lower legal bills if we use Windows right?
It would be nice if reviewers rated heat which is becoming a big issue. Especially after the macbook pro problem and anything running on a duo.
I bought my compaq based on price and heat issues. I want a "laptop" and not a "notebook". Yes, my laptop never gets hot and I can comfortably place it on my lap. A cool CPU is also a longer lasting unit. My gf's Vio on the underhand, needs a special USB powered cooling unit pad below it to prevent if from overheating. She paid almost $500 more on her notebook too. Ouch
Dells so far do not have a good reputation for being lap friendly.
Based on past performance? Based on marketing of all the companies?
The PS1 was not expected to be sucessfull. Neither was the DS gameboy over the hyped psp as another poster pointed out.
Personally I think the wii is going to surprise everyone and nintendo once again will rerule the console market. It will cost $225 while the PS3 will be anywhere from $600 to $800 and the games will be $70-80, the xbox360 will have about 8 or 9 games by this christmass and cost $350. Also Nintendo is doing innovative things and will attract a broader range of consumers.
If the slashdot poll we had last month was any indication of consumer preference, I think Sony and MS are in trouble. We are more technically minded and more game savy than the average consumer so the preference %'s for the xbox and PS3 should be much higher than the general public.
Last, for those who say the wii is weak on grahics, please check this out? Also take a look at the new Galaxy Mario? The gamecube right now has the best best graphics out of the ps2 and xbox 1. Go ask any real game developer and dont believe the hype out of sony?
Microsoft already working on one to address teh issue. I dont know if you have to pay additional money as MS hinted that ms antivirus will be a subscription service.
Running everything off a livecd is a good idea since most infected pc's are as slow as a 486 and could take hours to days to scan. In this case it would be ineffective.
I wonder if bios virii are next/? Its the only way to go above even booting off a pc and some malware and spyware makers are working on this. That way it can't be removed at all. Claria should be taken out to a field and shot.
I passed it in a week and it didnt help me get a IT job:-(
I did have to study like crazy and memorize alot of details in order to pass. Its not easy if you dont study or apply yourself to learn the material and yes it does take minimal effort.
But its great to show that yes, I know how to turn it on and am willing to learn and proved my committment with my a+. Not I am experienced and can solve any problem in under an hour, bla bla.
If you pass the A+ certification then you can start your career and learn as you go. It shows that you are reasonable intelligent and committed to your line of work and can become great with experience (mostly).
A+ certs are a great to save money if they work with experienced tech staff in large settings. The experienced ones handle the difficult cases and can guide the entry level ones. If thats all you hire then yes you have a problem.
What if the other machine doesn't have the same apps? What about your dekstop settings and profile? How about importing your email and todo list from Outlook?
I was thinking of starting an opensource project for this but its in overhead my head until I learn more programming.
It would be cool if that could be a reality with thumb based apps like pocketFirefox and desktop syncronization. Then each computer is yours while you use it. The hardware would be hidden like plumbing when you use a sink.
I have a feeling this is where we will be heading next. Desktop applets and settings are where the new growth is and Apple, Google, and Microsoft are providing it.
NetBSD is not only small but uses significantly alot less ram for a slim base install.
Also NetBSD libc is alot smaller than the bloated glibc of linux. The resulting binaries are smaller for standard apps. Kde seems a little faster but perhaps its my imagination.
NetBSD is great for older systems that wont modern software.
The early 3d cards had no GPU. Only the $2,000 for running studioMax.
I had an S3 virge and it was a 2d video card back in 1996 with some 3d effects that could speed gameplay.
The vodoo1 is what brought true fast 3d performance. I think nvidia was coming out with the tnt at the time but I am not too sure as 3dfx was all the craze then. A few months after quake was released a new version with opengl called glquake came out. Its the only way to run quake on NT these days besides winquake and the graphics looked amazing with full anti-aliagned texture mapping.
Still the cpu did all teh geomtry and only effects and texture mappings were done on the early 3d cards. If you notice quake1 is laking detail. All the levels are just mazes and polygons with textures mapped on to them. Doom had alot of things like candles and bodies lying on the floor, etc. This was because of the limitations of not having a GPU.
The package update manager had nothing to do with Miguel b ut was a senior management decision to integrate it with Zenworks
From what I heard the package manager looks for a Zenworks server via NDS and emulates it if your not on a novell network (like a home ). Thats just dumb and reminds me of Microsoft integrating everything with IE and OCX. Then the worms hit.
Miguel was hired to do the gui and integration and also continue working on gnome. Also KDE 3.5.2 has alot of problems. Ubuntu made the mistake of using it the week before it realsed their distro. 155 bugs alone in the kubuntu bug tracking system are kde based.
It was smart to delete it as it added more bugs than fixed. KDe needs to work on another release that focuses on stability rather than adding more features that have bugs. I switched to gnome recently for this reason

Its the best distro I have seen yet for a pc/notebook. I have a cheap laptop which I assumed would not work at all and I was very surprised that everything from the wifi card to even the 7 in one card reader worked and I didn't have tgo configure anything.
Ubuntu has a livecd so you can test it out without even installing it. Ubuntu is what Linux desperately needed as most distro's lost stability and focused more on the server.
I hated those dumb things and they only irrate users and add to handle time.
BTW the call center I work at pays only 13/hr for retention. When did you work there? I think with some call centers in India there is huge pressure to keep the costs down.
"It sounds to me like you're dangerously close to saying companies have a right to harrass you into backing out of a cancellation. They certainly have a right to OFFER customers something not to cancel, but they don't have a right to either guilt you into not cancelling or to otherwise harangue you about it. It's the customer's money, and it's the customer's credit card. In the absence of a contractual agreement, they have the right and expectation to be able to call and cancel at any time without getting any guff about it."
Actually AOL does assume it has the right to harrass you and its highly encouraged. I worked there.
You can not have more than 3 or 4 cancellations an hour and you must take a ton of calls with low handle time. In order to keep your job you must try to stop them at all costs! I am not saying this is ethical but I would have been rude too and nervous and thinking about my stats.
Its the job of the staff to protect AOL from the customers. Its backwards over there and I do wish someone would sue to change this. Many phone companies saw this and loved the idea and do the same thing with people trying to cancel. This is probably going to be the new thing.
But yes if you need to be rude back then so be it as long as the numbers are met for hte bean counters then things are good. The jerks there always had the best stats and the lowest handle time on the phones and the least amount of cancellations an hour.
Which is why I refuse to buy the new macbook pro's or any notebook with cpu's that have heating issues. The macbook pro's can get up to 95C if you enable the hidden cpu temperature gauge in MacOSX!
I settled for an Intel Centrino and refused to do the core duo in its current generation. COnroe supposed to be much cooler.
THe notebook I have is cool to the touch and the hotest part is the battery that just gets warm.
For anyone reading this who is considering a laptop remember the hotter the cpu, the shorter the life is of the system.
%100 true. I tried to help everyone with their problems which was why I lost my job at AOL. My handle time went through the roof and you have to be rude so the customer can hang up on you.
It is their job to prevent you from leaving at all costs. I dont remember the stats (I worked in the tech department) but I believe they wanted no more than 3 or 4 cancellations an hour. If you have more than 6 its time for you to clean out your desk and work elsewhere.
Or as they like to put it "Your keybadge wont work" as a polite way of saying your fired.
Its a very bad place to work and the bean counters call teh shots and make senior decisions on how its run everytime. I am surely not surprised it lost 30 million customers. They are very short sighted indeed and dont give a crap about anyone including their own customers. Just how they look to senior management at AOL corporate.
Also the call center I worked did some borderline illegal practices and they always change the name of the subsidaries they do some call center work because they keep getting sued for firing people for unjust causes. But I consider this outright fraud.
So if you know anyone who uses AOL and wants to quit, here is how to do it? Call the credit company and tell them not to pay AOL anymore. Problem solved and you get to save someone's job.

And you needed a scsi card. Expensive today and especially 12 years ago
You can get a firewire or usb2 hard drive if you want to use it as a backup solution.
Then you can transfer it to computer to computer and not have to worry if it has an expensive blue ray reader.
Your right about the hard drive. Definitely for $399 you can get a 200gig usb2 drive easily

Ubuntu Linux already underclocks the CPU unless it detects I am doing something intensive. Its sweet.
For those running it on a laptop, go right mouse button click on the bar on the top of the screen in Gnome and add the cpu gauge applet?
With acpi and modern versions of windows and linux the underclocking should take care of itself. I assume XP does this as well?

Sure you can have it down right with real experienced developers but no one wants to pay for them with these cheap Indians around.
