If the EU's anticompetitive commision grows any balls then heads will roll and people will be fired until it finds employees friendly to Microsoft. Just look at what happened in the US when ms lobbied heavily when it was on trial?

For example the EPA was GE's number one enemy for years as it freely dumped pcb's into the Hudson river. So what did GE do after all their appeals ran out? They threaten to leave state and remove 10,000 jobs with them. The politicians would lose their jobs from the mob of angry voters and other businesses would suffer.
So they caved in. GE stopped polluting and uncle sam is now paying the bill to clean up their problem.
Same is true with Microsoft. Many in the EU hate big government (not nearly as much as in the US) and will become angry that they can not go into a bestbuy and buy their system of their dreams and run Microsoft Office. Businesses reliant on windows with custom vb apps need windows on their desktop or they will go out of business. They too will have a riot and can any politician who dares get in the way of microsoft.
Hate to say it but Microsoft clearly has the upperhand as much as I would like to see htem punished. They are not stupid and they have corporate europe and consumers by the balls.
Its not just about drm. Its about requiring upgrades to its users. Something that is technically difficult and a pain with linux rather than a fresh install of the latest versions.
DRM is here to stay and EFI is being pushed for the sole purpose to prevent windows piracy. Our own computers will need to interact with drm TCPA chips and use EFI to trust all our components in our computers. WIth GPL3 its impossible to port linux to the pc anymore because it needs to use it in order to boot.
People downloaded Linux because it was a free unix that they didn't have to put down $$$$ for a unix worksation.
The GPL just happened to be the license that it was under. FreeBSD probably would have taken over if it were not for the AT&T lawsuit. INfact I heard of BSDI and FreeBSD long before Linux back when I wanted a heavy duty BBS system in 1993. I heard of linux several years later.
Personally the license had noting to do wiht it and possix and BSD userland and kernels have been around for alot longer and would hav existed to this day without RMS.

GPL gives freedom to the user at the expensive of the corporations. Also corporations make things people want so the user suffers too. Something like photoshop and paintshop pro are well worth their money.

THings are going up in price and everyone else makes more money per year and raises are used to cover the cost of inflation. Why should someone be expected to get a paycut annually while everyone else gets raises?
I really wonder if its worth it to get involved in IT anymore? Unless you have a quarter million in revenue hanging around to start your own business your hosed.

Microsoft has been mentioning they want one and Microsoft did the same tactic in the PDA market agaisnt palm and thus suceeded. Corporate departments swallowed them up and the people who purchase PDA's and Blackberry's have money. I think this is what microsoft hopes. Will it suceed? I dont know.

THe 1984 mac was brilliant and Apple made some pretty innovative things in teh past. I think the 1984 mac was one of the greatest revolutions since the www came into existance and brought computers to the mass and created windows, fonts, and UI's to the whole market.
The apple powerbook was the second. Apple came out wiht multimedia systems yeras before pc's did and its laptops came up with innovative things like touchpads and trackballs first.
Apple computers are designed for people and not high end users. Today I feel they are real artsy and designed to look cool but its all show. THe Ipod was a great idea too but mp3 players were on the market before. They just never really took off.
I purchased my ipod mini mainly because of Itunes. It had the largest collection of music around. MusicMatch and others are catching up with the amount of titles carried so its kind of mute today.
WIndows no longer is the piece of crap it was. Its expensive and proprietary but so is apple now.
I think Apple deserves credit for its past acomplishments but I would liek to see something innovative and new again. Not something artistic and nice to look at.

Windows makes calls to the bois all the time and Apple took off bios emulation with their version of EFI.
Remember you need to also have it installed first. MS will refuse to install if it sees efi on a mac.
