According to www.mindcraft.com NT is faster by %400 than linux with webserving.
Your telling me that at the same time Microsoft's tcp/ip stack can't handle 10 megs a second. Hmm its like intentional fud was spread around and the truth comes in after using NT in the real world that it is not a real enterprise solution.
Most website authors realize their users wont download qucktime and will go to a competitors site with wmv support. Everyone has it so why use anything different?
The x86 servers they are selling are price competitive with the dells and Hp's and can run solaris which has commerical unix software that linux still lacks. A stable api and abi would be nice so unix vendors can port to linux. You can run windows or linux on them as well if you wish.
I agree with SGI. SGI's performed poorly and were just generic pc's with ok graphics cards and were expensive. Sun's offerings are not bad and solaris is really nice for those who need uptime. If sun can pull it off then great. It seems they are trying to reinvent themselves rather than acting desperate.
Lets hope I am right. The sun systems look more like open x86 unix systems then anything and you can buy one for as low as $799. Very much unlike the Sun I used to remember.
Well coming from a C student who is now 29 but used bbs's compuserver and aol (before it sucked) I get your point.... bows head down... I am a member of myspace.:-(
The trend towards a service oriented economy has started since the 1780's when the government began looking at percentages of jobs. Its nothing new.
Manufactoring came and gone and farming is still going down from the one %88 of all jobs during the 18th century.
I think the idea of nafta is ludacrious. Money always supposed to move in massive quantities as fast as possible to blow up the GDP in any given nation. Now to satisfy a few billionaires we have leaks where money is flowing from our balloon overseas in the hope that their gdp balloons may grow and they somehow *mught* buy our products. It doesn't make economic sense.
If someone is making 1/3 the amount of an American then that person will consume alot less. Dont give me the argument for things are cheaper in India. Housing yes, but a honda civic is the same price as one here and so is a dell computer.
The MPC or marginal prospensity to consume is much lower for the wealthy who benefit from nafta as they put their money into savings and it does not trickle back to create more jobs.
We need protectionism now if we want to protect our future.
The reason I still use it is because my friends there use it more than lj or other communities.
I try to filter as many friends requests as possible to those who are older 23+. But still I see comments like "OMG... would u sooo do the person above me.." and other silly bulletins that I could not give a shit at all about.
I would leave if I could. I guess I need more real life friends closer to home and less online.
They are still required to sell a certain amount of items without commission to keep their jobs.
For example if a customer bought a new computer then you better as hell sell them lan cables and software! If not then the management would look down on you for being a lackey. No I dont work at best buy and never have.
Its just from what I read on the net and from talking to former employees. They use strong arm tactics to increase sales but they do not pay them a dime more. Just give them more job security by hassling people.
Do they pay me to listen to an ad? Or is this a way to add my number for a product I am interested on some website?
With sites like buy.com and ebay.com I can just browse what I want and pick my price. Its a little different from someone calling me and I have no idea who the hell they are.
Also I do pay even for local calls on my wireless plan if I go above a certain number of minutes during certain hours of the day.
I used to work at staples and we purposely put products out with expired rebates or a rebate that expired in mere days before consumers could file them in.
Also I bought a video card that was defective at compusa and it was teh last one in stock. The same exact card was available at circuit city for $60 more. Even with the rebates teh price would only equal the exact one at compusa.
So in other words you are getting no value at all depending on the product with the rebates. This is also assuming that the rebates are not expired. So yes whinning should be appropriate and I believe Circuit City does this to make consumers think they are getting a better deal when they see "BIG SAVINGS" on the price tags of the shelves.
This made me a customer who no longer shops at circuit city as a result. I supposed I could shop at..gulp.. worst buy even though they treat their employees like dirt and seem to be the walmart of the tech industry.
For a minute there I thought claria was an evil company that installed trojans errr spyware on people's computers. But now since their name has changed I feel nothing but warm feelings for the company.

Claria has a deal in cash for microsoft not ot remove their products and also will sue anyone who tries to remove their software due ot loss of revenue. I believe they are going after lavasoft as well.
Actually I got an installation with firefox 1.x a few months ago before 1.5.
I got 10 little messages asking me if I want to save or open x.exe on some porn site. I know better and closed firefox rather than hit cancel which would install it.
Turns out my computer became slower with random disconnects. I had no trojan or worm but had claria software installed in return from the hole in firefox. I did not even click on any link. The code was probably in a javascript on the website.
I could use the noscripts extension and disable javascript but I am dependant on gmail and a few other websites that require it.
However the desired effect is for marketing purposes too. Notice how all the comments here besides one mention your point? They rather talk about Microsoft and the problem with windows and do not blame diebold using a pretty obvious scheme to avoid accountability.
Its like oh well we use windows. I guess the law doesn't apply to us, next!
The reason they are talking about microsoft and windows is to avoid complying with the law. They are intentionally doig their own thing and delaying giving otu the source code. Lame really but its standard court procedings in which the lawyers are doing everything possible to avoid judgement and action.
His name points to an url and he is trying to use slashdot to boast his google pagemark. Move the cursor over the name? His site pops right up.
Just yesterday a famous spammer did the same thing and posted here. The slashdot editors should stop accepting such stories that are fabricated in order to boast his advertising revenue.
VaLinux (remember them) tried to sell linux only servers and workstations but lost due to dell being cheaper because they can produce in massive bulk.
But some people need windows. Will Microsoft sell you their software without paying the tax ON ALL MACHINES. Sure but they will charge %400 more than your competitors and throw you out of bussiness.
With MS its all or nothing. Or they can just refuse to sell you any version of OEM windows at all to get back at you. Then most of your customers will walk away or pay the ms-tax on a dell and still save money and get better support.
All the ones I have seen cost the same with windows installed or not. I am still paying for it.
Sure I can build my own system but I do not have benefits of buying in bulk that produces economies of scale.
So either way I end up paying more building my own system which I did, or save money but pay Microsoft.
In Russia is the only place I know where you dont have to pay the ms tax and you get the computer with freedos. But ms is furious over it and still demands the ms tax be paid because any lose of sale is considered piracy by their accounting department.
Its sad really and you know whats worse? Many corporations have blanket licenses because they are afraid of an MS audit yet they pay the ms tax again for each desktop thus paying Microsoft twice.
MS counts on this to make even more money and explains why they have billions upon billions in cash.
No real 3d boast in performance over software emulation. But the vodoo 3dfx really was a real 3d card and the games looked soo much better.
Quake1 I know for a fact was the first 3d game in id. Doom was a 2d hack. I wonder if descent is really 3d as well. I knew it had degrees of freedom that interplay's marketing department boasted about.
I miss descent for network play. It was the best right up there with quake3.
Quake1 was written in a %100 3d engine. It was software by default since 3d cards were coming out in teh final weeks when it was released.
Glquake is a patch that uses opengl acceleration and windows rather than dos api's. I was impressed since I bought the first vodoo1's and bilinear filtering and smooth colors rather than pixelating walls were SOOO COOL!
Glquake is the only way to run quake on windowsNT based systems. I think there is winquake as well but it does not have any opengl support.
Wait a minute?

This post by a mac user illustrates this.
Amazing that this guy is hurting his own platform because he feels he needs to only support microsoft based standards. Sadly, I feel he has a point.
Will grandma view the video with quicktime? Or will she leave for a competitor's site with wmv support so she can just point and click?
but .. but?
Then I would have to leave my computer and home??
Scary.
Nope. Its because the disparity between the rich and poor is growing and wages are not growing with cost of living.
People who steal assume they wont get caught. Not because they are scared of what might happen. Otherwise they would not steal at all.
If you can't make a living and no one will pay you enough to live and you have kids to feed you ethicals radically change.

But the wages which would drop would be ours.
Not to mention the lack of spending by laid off workers would hit our employers pocketbook.

Hey I resent that! All 0 of my friends locally agree and all my +18 friends online agree.
Great place for porn too

Claria has a deal in cash for microsoft not ot remove their products and also will sue anyone who tries to remove their software due ot loss of revenue. I believe they are going after lavasoft as well.
Well our government rewarded them by hiring one of their executives to be in charge of the department of homeland security's data privacy division.
Thats how my pc got infected.

That is the problem. Most users need windows.
