Reading these is like someone going on a rant about IBM. Strange today, as MS lost the monopoly they had.
The incentive is simple. Why do they still sell Office to Mac users? To make money. Visual Studio is another money maker. If they can't beat em on the mobile platforms at least join them and make money for app makers. VS code already runs on Linux natively and VS 2015 community edition even has full Android SDKs and emulators and java 7 jdk. No I am not making this up.
MS incentive also is the new CEO wants cloud and services and less concerned about platforms and tie in like Gates was. Azure has FreeBSD and Linux vm's ready to boot as they make money either way whether you use Windows or not.
Xamarin makes sense in that you are not tied to one platform. MS is turning into IBM after they lost they became more open. The UI and integration might not be as much but a Xamarin app for IOS will likely run on Windows Moible for easily with porting.
In essence the incentive for Sun with Java and why they didn't really capitalize on it. The idea is if they give java away these applets run on Solaris so what do you know?
I'm sorry, but Windows 8/10 is completely unusable because of its awful UI. No, MS Office is not better, again because it requires the use of a completely unusable UI to get to it, so it's not even an option. And finally, MS's spyware makes Windows 10 a complete non-option.
I have no problem adopting to change.
What is wrong with Windows 10? Windows 8 I can see. With a trackpad sh*t would fly as soon as you moved the cursor. With 8.1 I got a surface and it is a superb OS on a mobile device. On the desktop I got a start button replacement and it is light and works faster than 7.It is usable for me just fine and I use it for Hyper-V and could get used to the metro screen fine with the start button if I didn't have a start menu replacement.
With Office... seriously I have not heard anyone ANYWHERE outside of slashdot whine about the ribbon in many many years. I actually hated the nested menu's inside Office 2003 and MS research is correct in that the ribbon enables more people using the products functions.
Try this out? Open any office program and type Alt? See the shortcuts being shown? As a result I can use Office without a mouse now if I am on a plane with these shortcuts oh and I can preview all the changes in Word now without going through the jumbled mess of Office 2003 or LibreOffice as a plus too. I prefer Office just for the ribbon. Yes the horrors of my post here on slashdot, but outside of this site I tend to think most people agree.
I understand many like Linux for it's uses but there is no need to get religious about it and find reasons..... and to Windows 10.
Windows 10 was put on my surface without my permission at the Microsoft Store for a screen repair. Grrr. It is perfectly usable and what is so bad and unusable about the GUI in Windows 10? What the icons move makes it unusable?? Take them off then.
Personally, I have been advocating phasing out coal in favor of nuclear for over 40 years. The vast majority of people who claim to be oh so very very concerned about CO2, on the other hand, have been among those obstructing nuclear for over 40 years. Warming is their chickens coming home to roost. Unfortunately, those chickens are crapping all over those of us who do not deny arithmetic, too.

You do know it takes lots of dirty coal energy to make those plutonium rods reactor grade so you are not really carbon free either with this
Agreed. Come on more competition is a good thing for everyone.
Google = MS of the mobile platform. A monopoly and mindshare
MS= OS/2 of the mobile world. Better and corporate friendly but smells of old evil and a past that is better left there regardless of good quality or not.
I certainly prefer Windows Mobile over Android as I use both. I can do in 1 gig snapdragon 400 with no lag what Android can do with a 810 with 3 gigs?? Seriously it took a Nexus 6p to catch up with my Mom's $60 Nokia 640.
But no apps mean bla besides a better version of outlook for Windows (Android version sucks balls)
Actually I switched back to Adobe since a client required an esignature which only adobe provides. Since 2012 reader included a sandbox. Just make sure you disable opening internet links and you are fairly secure if you don't click on everything. Reader was crap 5 years ago but it has xss JavaScript cross domain protection now too. Chrome has its own PDF reader so that is mute for security
FOXIT is now malware It has been bought out by a malware company. After uninstalling I would re-image your system as it installs some backdoors and other evil stuff.\
This and of course we all know uTorrent installs bitcoin miners too since it was bought out too
Several thousand employees perhaps. School Districts are big employers who also have lawyers, accountants, business analysts, and shared drive and applications too just like the private sector.
I believe people still value 500GB or 1TB storage in a laptop instead of 32GB or 256GB.
You can get a 256 GB for just $116 these days. It is approaching quite rapidly and for a higher end laptop there is no reason to go mechanical unless the OEM wants to make them start slow so they can sell you a new one in 2 years
I thought the new method was to shorten the support forcing people to update or risk getting exploited from un-patched windows. Android phone manufactures (Samsung being one of the worse) have been doing it for a few years now.
This is one area I am in the minority and agree with Microsoft. Desktop support for an OS for 10 years is INSANE. Good luck trying to get NVME on 7 without issues.
I prefer my SSD to last more than 6 months before presenting errors and issues. I know, I'm crazy like that.
I had great luck with their pro drives. My Samsung 840 pro raid 0 has been up for several years now for my home labs and high performance games:-) No issues at all as the pro series with the 3d technology is only $35 more than the evo's and worth it as they go through extra QA as they are enterprise grade as well if you are worried about reliability.
I bought some value sansdisk ones a few years ago and one started getting corruption. I guess you get what you pay for. But compared to 2009 with the sh*tty sandforce controllers the reliability is mountains better today.
They are keeping them for the higher margin more enterprise and gamer/enthusiats market.
I only buy pro's and I own a 3d 850 pro for my main rig. THey are well worth the extra $25 as the previous evo's all experience slowdowns and lockups. I heard a firmware update fixed them but we got burned here.
But 3d is expensive and the cost to fabricate goes down. This is good news for the consumer market as even a consumer grade drive is so many miles ahead of a mechanical disk as long as they do not slow down or break.
What about gay people? What about dangerous ideologies of a political party and people being brainwashed to vote against things like healthcare or deaths in wars?
How is that good?
Denying science is dangerous too. Preventing sex education is harmful.
It is very very very hard to change your gut feelings and morals and values you learned as a child. Yes, as you become an adult you question more and develop individuality but cultural norms are still prevalent.
To be taught science is opinion and opinion is fact and evolution is so incredible silly to believe in with so much overwhelming evidence of creation over and over and over, where fellow kids taunted those silly atheists who do believe messes with your minds even as an adult.
Yes it is part of the southern US cultural to be in fear of science. Scientists are liberals after all which support civil rights and evolution and since it disagrees with some pastor then it must be from the heavons to oppose it etc.
You can bring evidence and even the top biblical scholar Bart Ehrman (go youtube him) talks about it took 15 years leaving fundalemtalism even after seeing the bible contradict itself over and over and over with 400,000 variations from copying mistakes and doctrine. Tell an evangelical the book of John was not written by John but close to the 2nd century and the books of Titus and Timothy were forgories not written by Paul and their brains melt:-)
You can't reason with these people. They have their own so called scientists who have proof carbon dating is a conspiracy. Mainly so there is not proof evolution can exist and also how the real biblical scholars are really wrong:-)
Thanks to Oracle's ruling on Java a clean room implementation of ZFS is still owned by Oracle as the API and keywords are owned.
No distro outside Solaris is safe and could open your employer to liability from an Oracle audit
Lol

Technet is what MS oriented IT professionals use nowdays. Detailed and only way to pass the MCSE exams.
Agreed. Come on more competition is a good thing for everyone.

It is not the operating systems job to route packets. It's the startup daemon silly

Conduit is real nasty. Only a reimage can uninstall it

I now got an idea for a project to teach myself Erlang.
No man, all the cool kids use Outlaw Techno Pyschobitch as the real rockstar language.
Only as bad as IE 7? Oh OK then
The worst of the worst unless anyone can figure out that spaghetti called Drupal.
It is the IE 6 of CMS and people keep using it.
I swear we all should just give up and write our own cms.
Several thousand employees perhaps. School Districts are big employers who also have lawyers, accountants, business analysts, and shared drive and applications too just like the private sector.
Nope. IT department got the blame and will probably be axed for an Indian team. Seen it before
Home users use Windows so this does apply

What do you all want to make a bet all the items will still include mechanical disks to keep them slow so people keep on the upgrade treadmill?
I can finally a large enough drive to fit systemD on
The enterprise edition does not.
FYI they do not phone home. They collect telemetry and have been for years. They do not log in and snoop, read your documents, etc.
I prefer my SSD to last more than 6 months before presenting errors and issues. I know, I'm crazy like that.
