It would appear that Episode IV was rather aptly named.

Though it's still very useful for some things, its time has passed and Joe Public is unlikely to revisit it.

It is really not about Joe Public using it, Joe Public never used gopher in the first place. What Gopher would be used for, I hope, is a no frills presentation of real information. Such as that document, it was perfect for Gopher, it did not require any pictures or links or anything else, just the text.

  3. .biz is as good as dead on Will New TLDs' Restrictions Negate Their Aims? · · Score: 1

No company willing to shell out that much money for a domain name will ever buy .biz . Not only does .biz not have as high a profile as .com , but it also looks really stupid. I can't imagine running foocorp.biz instead of foocorp.com .

  5. Re:RMS = Bill Gates?? on Richard Stallman vs. Jorrit Tyberghein · · Score: 1

I have no problem with say Bill Gates (yuck) taking my work and "modifying it for the better" and keeping his changes for himself, because he is not making it better. He is only altering it not making it better, sure maybe he has made it faster, or smaller, or given it one of thoes happy little paper clips. This is bad for both Bill Gates and the Free Software/Open Source community. It is bad for us because we can get at the source and make changes, see what Bill has done, improve it even more (which in turn, Bill would hopefully do and give it back to us), and distribute it to an ever wider userbase. Bill loses when he keeps the source because the hacker community will go elsewhere for a solution. Now Bill loses the buissnes (that may not be all bad) which he cares about, and the support of a user community.

Yes, I agree with you. (Background: Love Linux. But I also like BSD, a lot. Between the two operating systems, I would take *BSD. Between the two licenses(sp?) I would take the GPL. (This does not mean that I think all software should be GPL, and have use BSD style licenses before, and will again.) RMS is a bit extreme, but if it were not for RMS's radicalism, there would be no FSF and GNU Project. I do not agree with RMS on many issues, but he is still a hero to me. RMS does not have to like other licenses, but respect would be nice. The last thing the Free Software/Open Source movement needs is RMS vs. ESR vs. the world.

  12. Torn on WIPO Settles 'Cybersquatting' Disputes · · Score: 1

Personaily, I am torn about the issuse. Cybersquatting is a very bad thing, but I also think that a ruleing body for the internet is a very bad thing. One solution is making the regestring of domain names very expensive. The idea could be altered so that you must provide some proof that you are taking the name in good faith. Both of these are not very good ideas. What I think is a possible soluting is in some way making the internet self policing. I don't really have an idea about the implimentation of this, and I would like to hear some ideas. Right now, I think that the UN should do as most people do, ignore cybersquaters. -------------------------------------------------- Please forgive any spelling errors.

  14. Re:Why? on MacOS In A World w/ 2 Microsofts · · Score: 1

This is really not as stupid as you might think. While I prefer Linux over MacOS, and even Windows for GUI reasons only, Apple has put out a very good operating system. Older versions were based to a degree on NeXT, which was based on BSD. The newist version is based on the Mach kernel and has a BSD layer on top, as you can see in the article(which I am sure you read). The easiest place for information is Apples Web Site, another useful site for information is this operating system comparison focusing on comparing Rhapsody (Mac OS X) to Windows NT. Their is also this post on Slashdot. Oh wait, information about Mac OS X is not susposed to be on Slashdot. And in response to your second statement, many of my friends will agree with me on this, if Mac OS X had a better interface we would love to have it on our PCs.
